Yes. Every work using a different character lens offers another perspective on Reimu, and CoLA in particular explores things like Reimu seen as a youth, her way of thinking and how it evolves over time, and the disconnect between her natural talent at her role and her lack of knowledge about it.

The fish thing is about Reimu being so in tune with nature that she appeared to walk over a river because fish propped her up, without her even noticing the fish nor the river. In one of the Fairies manga.

I do agree with several points in this essay, but it is quite outdated as a lot has happened since it was written in early 2011. FS and WaHH have expanded a lot on the daily lives, motivations and personalities of both Reimu and Marisa. Our main heroines have also started acting more like adults in recent years, they're no longer the same reckless, teenage bullies they were back in EoSD.

I would probably describe Reimu as lawful neutral, sometimes ruthlessly so (Yukari must be really proud of her little soldier, she even gives her food and donations from time to time). There is really only one true felony in Gensokyo, and that is disrupting the balance between native humans and youkai. So far, Reimu has canonically dealt out capital punishment twice: once to a human villager who turned himself into a youkai on purpose (as seen here >>17771774), and once in pic related when a youkai possessed a human villager.

There are also occasions, such as that particular one in CoLA, where Reimu has drifted into lawful evil. Even though her job description involves "exterminating youkai on sight" (although not usually in the capital sense), it says nothing about robbing them of their possessions after beating them up, then taking turns with Marisa to beat them up again once they come back to get them. However, again, Reimu seems more grown up now and hasn't done anything quite this mean in a couple of years. She still takes advantage of opportunities for her own gain in rather immoral ways from time to time, though.

What bothers me the most about the essay is how it describes Reimu as this "pure" (perhaps almost enlightened), altruistic/nihilistic, borderline sociopath with no worldly attachments, be they pursuits, possessions, or people. She is indeed strange for a human and hard to understand, but I'd say that she does have motives, and feel sympathy for others, although these parts of her personality are highly nuanced and take time to understand.

Reimu takes pleasure in her job of exterminating youkai and resolving incidents, and has even complained about boredom during calm periods. She enjoys good food and parties, and do on occasions work hard to gather donations so that she can keep hosting them. She looked the other way during the nights when the Kappa sneaked through the Human Village to their temporary storehouse, where they kept their belongings safe. She cares about her image, and has even thrown victory celebrations so that her incident resolving deeds won't go unnoticed. She willingly spends a lot of time with Marisa, and they take turns helping each other out, unlike pretty much anyone else she knows. Although she rarely gives Marisa (or anyone else) preferential treatment, that's probably because Marisa is a longtime childhood friend which she takes for granted, almost like a sister.

So even though Reimu isn't picking up any other pursuits besides occasional youkai hunting and parties, that doesn't mean she's a blank slate of a person. If anyone here on /jp/ met her in real life, she would probably come off as a huge normalfag of a woman. She simply has very little interest in knowledge, trinkets, and other worldly things beyond those that let her keep on living her life as she currently pleases.

As for this, Reimu, as others here have noted, does indeed show particular fondness for some people. Most people she knows are youkai, who she both finds irritating and fun depending. As for humans she's really an outcast. Her home, which is a ways from the village, is considered a dangerous place, and faith in her seriously fluctuates over time. She does like kids, though. She seems to genuinely take a motherly or sisterly role in front of them, looking extremely caring. Her reactions to Kosuzu being in danger are also telling, as she clearly is deeply concerned over her well-being.

Then we have Marisa. Marisa and Reimu ARE best friends. It's observable in her treatment toward Marisa versus her treatment toward almost anyone else. Rarely is she actually irritated with Marisa, instead she enjoys her presence and clearly enjoys hanging out with her and going on adventures with her almost all the time (because it's rare for Marisa to NOT be at the shrine). I believe the real reason she doesn't get close with many other humans is that she simply lacks the opportunity. Human villagers are superstitious and wary, and they have every right to be so when Reimu's shrine is literally infested with youkai on a regular basis, and the girl throws parties with them.

But the weirdos with less worry are going to get to know her and probably like her, and she is wont to like them in return. She does value humans. While she has been shown to be INCREDIBLY dismissive of outsiders in the past, literally letting them die without a second thought, that's part of "how the world works" to her, and if there's a human she CAN save, she WILL. Of course the clear example here aside from any outsider who asks to be returned is Sumireko. In ULiL, Reimu is genuinely heroic for maybe the first time in the whole series as she declares who she is and her role, telling Sumireko that she will not let a human stupidly die in front of her.

So yeah, Reimu does care. She cares a lot, but she's a weirdo and kind of a jerk.

Last note: I don't know about Reimu not valuing her life. She's definitely pretty fucking chill, but I think the reason she is consistently fearless is that there's nothing TO fear. Reimu is invisible and she knows it and she knows failure doesn't even mean death anyway (not that she'd ever fail).

Marisa is not invincible, and so you see her regularly concerned, startled, or genuinely afraid (even in the latest WaHH). Marisa has to work hard to keep up with Reimu, Reimu just wins.

>Reimu "It seems I got caught in her trap, so she got away."

>In SSiB, she took care of an injured moon rabbit despite not being obligated to, though she may have taken something from her, I can't remember too well.
Reimu stole her lunar veil, only recognizing it as "a shiny robe". Once the moon rabbit woke up, Reimu even went as far as saying "I'm not giving it back" straight to her face, which was kind of a dick move, really. Reimu used to have mean moments like this in the past. However, since the lunar veil was absolutely crucial to the moon rabbit (she wouldn't be able to go back home without it), and Reimu underestimated her power (it had disguised itself as an earth youkai rabbit), it simply dashed up and swiped it out of her hands, taking it back.

Reimu did indeed take care of the injured rabbit fully assuming that it was a youkai, and even had to stay awake all night since she lent her only bed to it. Just walking past any injured being seems to be below her. Reimu has a complicated relationship to youkai, though. In the past (around the time of SSiB), she was more of the opinion that youkai are sub-human monsters that should be exterminated upon sight, and robbing them of their valuables was no biggie. Therefore, she probably took the veil from the moon rabbit as "ransom" for nursing her.

In recent years, Reimu's "extermination upon sight" doctrine regarding youkai has slowly become more of a facade. She is still keeping them at an arm's length, but as long as they don't cause too much trouble, she leaves them alone. Some are also great fun at drinking parties!

>>17785604
>Notice how sometimes when she's sweeping leaves alone she hums and sings? She loves it. Routine and balance define her.
"Love" is perhaps a bit strong of a word for the sweeping itself. Many people hum along when they carry out mundane tasks (myself included) to stay in good spirits, or because their minds wander to something more pleasant. Reimu certainly doesn't mind delegating these tasks to others (I think we saw that in one of the Fairies' manga), but it's not like it's killing her to do them herself either. I DO agree that she loves routine and balance in her life in general, though.

>>17785685
>>17785721
I agree with most of what you wrote, nice post. Perhaps I wouldn't describe some of Reimu's traits with words that strong. Her reactions to Kosuzu being in danger is probably how most humans capable of basic empathy would react, if they found out that the life of a child/teenager that they know is threatened, and they could do something about it. Being deeply concerned over her well-being would mean spending a lot of time and effort on checking up on her, even when there is no danger, which she isn't doing (and would be rather out-of-character for Reimu). She seems more deeply concerned over the trouble Kosuzu is causing for the village with her youma books. The balance between youkai and humans is, after all, what she deeply cares about.

Finally, pic related is happy Reimu thinking about things she loves. She's also wearing some kind of undershirt here, a rare sight. Post more happy Reimus!
