The FSI stuff is also full time studying (i.e. 8 hours per day + individual reviews) because it's work, not a hobby.

Zettai Reiiki is a good one. It doesn't get much simpler than that, and the scans are good enough quality that looking up vocab via the furigana is pretty easy.

Reminder that, with manga that have furigana, you should only look up words that you feel like you ~need~ to understand to understand what's going on, or ones that you keep seeing but haven't figured out yet. The furigana readings do like 70% of the work needed to learn the words.

I don't feel like writing how I learnt Japanese through anime every time I tell people to watch anime. I basically spent 5 years watching English subbed anime and learnt enough Japanese to start watching raws of SoL anime. The first exposure to anime for the vast majority of westerners will be dubs, then possibly subs. I watched subbed anime for years, and while I did pick up quite a few words, not a single grammar point clicked.
If i was forced to watch raw, then things would be different and I'd have no choice but to pay attention, unless I wanted to understand nothing.

Looking back on what there is to gain from subs is a drop in the ocean compared to what you need to grasp; the motivation isn't there.

The ない ending of negative verbs functions like an i-adjective (or maybe is an i-adjective, I dunno). You can knock the い off i-adjectives and attach く to turn them into adverbs.

強い (strong) -> 強く (strongly)
etc.

Same applies to negative verbs, but trying to translate the result literally into English just results in nonsense.


The same thing is accomplished with na-ajectives by adding に, by the way.

急 (sudden) -> 急に (suddenly)
etc.

I learnt from English subbed anime, not raw. I got to the point where I could watch raw but I still watch most anime with English subs for various reasons

Watching raw will force you to pay attention but it doesn't matter if you have English subs as long as you still pay attention to the Japanese

As for the grammar, I just know what sounds right in Japanese the same way I know what sounds right in my native language. It's probably not at the same level but it's good enough that I haven't needed grammar guides

99.9% of people can't do that for more than a short while before their attention wanders, they forget they're supposed to be focusing on the audio and just end up reading the subtitles while the Japanese goes in one ear and out the other.

Speaking as someone who watched a lot of anime before starting to learn Japanese, I know it takes more than just idling listening to people speaking it in the background to actually learn anything more than the odd word.

Yes, my brain had gotten "used to hearing Japanese", as evidenced by how some of the grammar sounded familiar to me when I read through Genki, but even though it sounded familiar, until I read the explanations in Genki I had no idea what it actually meant.

If I have them enabled, whatever my intentions are when I start watching the episode, before I know it I'm just reading the subtitles and paying no attention at all to what the characters are actually saying.

If you're actually engrossed in the episode, your brain just defaults to whatever the easiest way of watching it is. I remember when I tried watching Nichijou, I would innocently just turn the subtitles on to figure out a particular bit, and before I knew it 5 minutes would have passed before I suddenly realized "oh fuck, I forgot to turn the subs off and have just been reading them instead of listening all this time".

I'm not saying you need concentration to watch anime. I'm saying you need concentration to resist the easy lure of subtitles and actively force yourself to rely primarily on your listening comprehension for 20 minutes straight.

As for subs, I personally don't have problems with them so I usually have them on if they are on by default. It's also fun to look for mistakes in translations or see how someone decided to translate something I thought would be difficult to translate. I'd seen about 200 full-length TV shows (about a quarter of which being 2 cour), not including OVAs, movies, rewatches, etc. (I estimate at least 1500 hours worth in total) and I only got as far as I said earlier - learning a few words and having some grammar patterns sound familiar but not knowing what they actually meant.

Try reinstalling the actual Anki add-on itself instead of Rikaisama. Alternatively, you could just switch to Yomichan which you're going to need to do anyway when Firefox updates to version 57 in a couple of weeks.

This does look better but using glossary-brief means you miss the important information about what kind of word the word being defined is, which would be included on a Rikaisama-made card. Using the normal glossary option which gives you that info just looks awful with this template.

It's still important information though and there should be some way of including it on the cards without it looking like a total mess.

There are problems with how it makes cards from EPWING dictionaries as well. Unlike with Rikaisama where it just gives you the definition, Yomichan dumps absolutely everything from the entry onto the card. Try using it with the Kenkyusha dictionary, for example, and you wind up with a million example sentences on every card. It sucks since the Kenkyusha definitions are almost always better than the EDICT ones. Another problem is with the Daijirin dictionary; Yomichan doesn't let your separate between the J-J and J-E definitions present in the dictionary so when you make a card from it you get both.

Are there any actually decent parallel texts out there?

The only two in the CoR both suck for different reasons. One of them ("Read Real Japanese") isn't really parallel text; Instead of giving a full English translation of the Japanese text, it has the Japanese text on one page, then breaks the Japanese down into arbitrary chunks which it translates on the other page, so you never get a translation of a full sentence. The other one ("Breaking into Japanese Literature") was translated by some pretentious wanker who adds words into the translation which were never actually used in the original text in order to "encourage you to think about word choices and style" and "echo the lushness of nineteenth-century authors" (meanwhile he laughably claims that his translations are literal).

I found it really useful as a matter of getting grammar down. The feedback is pretty helpful as a matter of figuring out what you're fucking up and getting a relatively random assortment of sentence structures.

It has a lot of room for improvement, and the lack of a lot of kanji is a big minus. It also ends seemingly way too soon, and the interval for when it prompts you to review a subject is wonky. For example, I'd tackle a few new lessons a week, and until I finish a tier I'd have up to 15 reviews a day. Finish the tier though, and you hardly get any prompts for the stuff you just barely covered. I just finished the last course last night, and normally by now I'd have a lesson that was up for review. Nothing so far, so I've just been doing general reviews. Kind of wish it would go on longer, just because it was really comfy for picking up vocabulary.

Overall pretty good if you only have an hour a day to study.

Oh, caveat with this. I didn't go in to Duolingo knowing nothing. I tested out of the first segment because I already knew kana and some basic grammar from tae Kim. You also have to be careful with their translations because sometimes they go the intent route rather than the literal route, like sometimes they have ください as "give me" instead of "please". It's very much a system where you need to research things independently to get the full nuance of everything.

It's great for actually practicing conjugations and getting particles down and learning it from an actual sentence instead of a table like TK.

The subtitles are wrong. I can think of two possibilities. One, they're transcribing が in relative clauses as の, which is grammatically equivalent. Two, they're bad subs made by chinese people and they're replacing archaic possessive が e.g. 我が with の for some reason. Otherwise there's no reason for them to be wrong and they're just wrong.

I have 14 leeches out of 2600 learned cards, and I just paste the words on the wall near my bed. I even stopped doing that since some of the words I can recall while reading, but not in Anki (e.g. leeched 線 because I always confused it with 緑, but now that I read more I never confuse them).

I think leeches are overrated. If you keep going adamantly enough, I doubt you'll fail to acquire the same word when seen in context. By that time you will have seen the same kanji/reading in different contexts. It just gets easier even if you "don't do anything" (i.e. if you just read more).

Cards are generated from a combination of a note and a card template. All notes in the same deck have to have the same list of fields. Scheduling data are bound to cards. Because the scheduling data is bound to a card, you would have to have a way to check whether two decks have compatible lists of fields, and pray that they have similar card templates. I know ankidroning is a meme around here but it is true we rely on Anki way too much. There's no real huge benefit from min/maxing it so much. Just go through your flashcards, get a fresh reminder of the meanings and kanji, then get your "real" learning from reading. Don't worry about leeches or the amount of new cards or any of that shit.

Honestly the only real beneficial "addition" to anki is audio and it helps associate the sound of the word to the actual word itself. Listening takes more reinforcement than reading so every little bit helps.

The leech threshold in the deck options I use for vocabulary recognition is set to 10 lapses before being suspended. At one point I set it to 3 lapses before neing suspended but that felt to little. Now, when a card is suspended I sort of think, oh well, I'll unsuspend it down the line when running out of new daily words.
Some anons advise against suspending leeches but to be honest the idea of wasting time on repeatedly failed facts when instead new facts could be focused on feels somewhat like missing out on what makes Anki so efficient.
That said, I have at current 30 suspended leeches of around ten thousand words which will likely become familiar enough via plain old reading at some point, if they are common enough.
After a enough reading the rarer words being reviewed in Anki will start to rise to the surface and be reviewed in a more "pure" SRS state, free from outside influence biasing reviews. In a way to get the most out of things like Anki you need to already have the most common facts familiarised but this doesn't happen till after loads of input. The input process which Anki itself expedites. In a round about way the entire review process naturally becomes more useful in terms of the efficiency of SRS around the point wherein most people will start dropping usage of it. There is probably a catch 22 there somewhere.

Well, I was reading from 11 am to 11 pm, but I stopped to eat, went for a walk, etc. so it's hard to say exactly. Also, I finished a route of the game, and started another one, so I already had most of the key vocab down, which also sped things up. There were many parts that were just minor variations of the first route (despite not being marked as already read) so I was "speed reading" them, finishing every line before the voiceover. There was only one sex scene, but I don't think it slowed me down that much.

Anyway, every single word in Core 2k/6k is useful. There might be another 2000 to 4000 words that are more useful for what you actually want to read, but you're not losing anything by learning them now. This is the reason it gives much better coverage than Core 6k: it is derived from exactly the data it's measuring.
