Sounds like a lot of the same stuff Alex Kerr was ranting about in his second book (although I wouldn't say that he was entirely wrong). At least the first book was a bit more balanced on the issue. You might be interested in both, just search for the name.

That said, he recently co-published a book about temples in Kyoto, so even he thinks there are some places left in Japan worth visiting.

Yeah it didn't taste good and it was well done as well. I thought Japs liked things rare or medium rare at least. I felt ripped off. 1000yen could buy two really good decent jap meals. I'm actually surprised that good food was really affordable in Japan and I'm not talking about cup noodles. Like a decent sized portion of soba is 450-550yen or so.

Kobe, I think, has the second biggest Chinatown but that felt like 2 little streets. Yokohama on the other hand is monstrously big.

The thing with Kobe beef is that unqualified "Kobe beef" doesn't mean a lot directly about quality, and what it does mean is made irrelevant by grinding it. Baseline is just "Prime equivalent and graded in Kobe", so no different from any western pub burger but also subject to the Japanese idea of a burger as a White Castle-McDonald's thin and cooked-through topping vehicle.

picture: One of the many, many mini-caves in the hiking trails around Aokigahara. The local geography and flora fascinate me, it feels achingly familiar as someone who grew up in hilly rural New England's tenuous but technically primeval mixed forests, but then underlaying it are countless volcanic formations. I'd like to stay a while technically also stay forever and study it.

>The thing with Kobe beef is that unqualified "Kobe beef" doesn't mean a lot directly about quality, and what it does mean is made irrelevant by grinding it.

Pretty much. When people talk about the high quality Japanese beef, A-5 grade beef or wagyu is generally what they mean.

>> No.17819044

>>17818848
Yep. BMS 6 is the baseline for Kobe, so technically there is some Prime that's a little worse, but the really good stuff is at least A5 (BMS 8+), ideally BMS 12 (sometimes described as A12), and in any case hamburger is an absolute waste for it b/c the hamburger grinding process will give you Kobe-tier fat and muscle layers just by putting chunks of tallow in the machine alongside your school lunch-tier steaks.

A tangent here, but has anyone ever had a B5 graded steak? It should be just as good, but I've never seen it in supers and idk if it's because it'd be really cheap if I could find it because Japanese "only the best" weaponized autism rejects it, or really expensive because the only nominal difference is it coming from smaller cattle so there's even less of it.

Pic is Fuji casting a massive shadow over the land. It's funny how I've climbed it but the only time I saw it was a tiny view way in the distance while I was waiting for the bus to it.

They're usually like this, and they're only usable for things that are very easily recycled like glass or cans I guess.
You get a price written on every can as to how much you'll get for it, usually a quarter per can/bottle in American dollars or Europlops in the form of a voucher. Small plastics are more or less worthless anyway so I don't think anyone in their right mind would be offering money in exchange for them, whereas aluminium, steel, and glass have a variety of uses after recycling.

That hobo with that bike had a nice little hobo shack near the Science Museum in Nagoya. Judging by the amount of cans he has, he must be one of the more affluent hobos and could afford himself that really nice shack in that nice area. I really should have taken pics of it but I'm scared that if the hobos saw me he thinks I'm shaming him for treating him like an zoo animal since there were 2 hobos close by.

Another culture shock experienced there is that a lot of parks don't have grass. It looks terrible but Japanese grasses probably grow too haphazardly in their climate.

I am from the U.S. South, so I am biased, but it is cold as fuck here in Japan during the winter.

Most houses lack central air/heat, insulated windows, and even insulated walls. I dread getting out of bed at times because it is just so fucking cold. Everyone is intent on being 省エネ, so what little heating there is is used sparingly.

Here in Kyoto it snows maybe once a year in late December/early January.

I hear it is a little better in Northern Honshu and Hokkaido, but still.

I honestly don't care that much about the winter in Japan.
I was in Fukushima last year. Snowed a bunch of times in winter, including two times where we got about 10cm overnight and took days to clear up. It was nice.

How you feel about the winter is going to differ from person to person, not only due to where you come from. For me, I just put on some heat tech and deal with it. I was lucky if my apartment reached 15C indoors at any time during last winter.

I miss Fukushima.

Yeah, Japan's got a pretty warm climate, but for some reason they build like it was outright tropical. I guess their winters in general are just cold enough to make sure you're miserable, but warm enough that they can get away with that kind of nonsense without freezing to death.

When you went, did you pick out where you wanted to stay before you went on the trip, or did you find places to stay as you went? I'm planning a month-long trip for next summer to go all around Japan (my first time going), and I'm still trying to get a feel for how much planning is too much.

>> No.17916932

I booked my accommodations a little over a month before I left, but I had the plane tickets ordered over half a year before that. Booking before you leave kind of removes some of that freedom of exploration, but since it was my first time as well I decided it would be better to book before I went. Didn't plan much more than that, I kind of like just doing what I want to then and there. If you book in the general area of where you want to go, day trips are no hassle because transportation in Japan is amazing. Highly recommend getting a JR pass for going between areas, especially if you plan on taking the Shinkansen, I saved a lot of money on that anyway.

Can't really contibute much picture wise since i dont really take pictures, but I think i can pitch in about the heating thing.

Coming from someone who has grown never had central heating or AC, both feel very weird and irritating after use, especially heating, which feels like my body is drying itself inside out and gives me a headache. Its not an excuse for the asinine insulation employed in most places (thats more out of habit and obstinance), but hopefully it explains a bit.

Planning a week in Tohoku after Tokyo mainly for Nebuta and some things I missed on my first trip, but also wanted to visit the Kanazawa area and Osaka.
