Well, you're right, there's simply nothing like Togawa.
I found Kidorikko to be similar to Yapoos, maybe you'll dig them

The vocalist doesn't really matches Jun (nobody does, really), but it's still a fun listen.

As for Jun herself, other than Yapoos you should check out Guernica if you haven't (my favorite of Jun's works)

Believe me, I went on Togawa's wiki page and downloaded every single thing there except the compilations of other albums.
That track by Guernica called 絶海 is fucking incredible.

There's a cover of Suzhou Serenade on the 3CD Jun Togawa Self Select and it sounds like a scrapped demo or something, it's only 60 seconds long. So nice to hear though.

Oh yeah, that's beautiful.
By their 3rd album they started using an actual orchestra and chamber instruments to record their music, which just make it sound so much more professional, I guess. But at the same time, while I love it, I have a slight preference for the first 2 records and that synthesized sound front. I really like the sound Ueno gets out of his synthesizers. And it just sounds more wacky and experimental, like 1920s cabaret music meets japanese synthpop.

all things ymo. best creative minds ever. their crazy good discog is rivaled only by their respective solo efforts. but yeah i just eat up all that they do (except for the modern ambient soundscape stuff which is hit or miss for me).

finally got around to watching merry christmas mr. lawrence, what a film. it was so comfy yet so crushing, definitely a bittersweet work of art. i can't stop thinking about it for various reasons, but more than anything i've found it was great source of personal inspiration. the visuals and music really sold me (though i was already familiar with the score, seeing it alongside its intended imagery was quite an experience). id love to have seen a bit more acting in dramatic films from sakamoto, thought he did a great job, especially considering it was a second-language effort.

listening to a lot of the female singers whose albums featured hosono or takahashi on production. so many amazing albums. quite keen on the miharu koshi stuff.

There's some speculation that it was her relationship w/ Toru Minegishi which drove her to it. Perhaps it plays a part, but I think she killed herself under the pressure of such a demanding industry. She rose to the top very quickly, and I'm sure her expectations were extremely high, she was essentially posed as the 'next Seiko Matsuda'. Probably not one thing, but a various culmination of issues that surrounded her.

There used to be a video on youtube of her last appearance on TV preforming くちびるNetwork, and you could visibly see she was unwell/not healthy. I can't seem to find it now though.

Even though it's definitely at the tail end of the 70s/80s, I think Violent Cop is an awesome movie that's totally emblematic of the era in which it was made. It makes me wish Kitano started his directing career a little earlier.

I'm going to be traveling later this week and I'm looking for some good music for driving. Usually a fan of stuff like Anri, Kaoru Akamoto, and Toshiki Kadomatsu (kinda plebian taste). Any recommendations? (videos related - usually find stuff like this before big trips. Helps keep me awake)

God I wish I could be a bosozoku back in the 80s. I think about it a lot. I already ride a motorcycle and it's incredible, I can barely imagine how it must feel to just ride in a group with a hundreds of other no good teenagers and just fuck shit up.

By now you've heard a few artists and songs.
I say keep searching them out.
Consume their music from every era (if they're still active).
Naturally you will fall down that youtube recommendation rabbit hole or listen to something posted here or elsewhere and repeat the process.
Misato Watanabe was my first exposure to 80s jpop that wasn't anime related.
Kept listening to anything of hers I could find and eventually stumbled across more and more stuff.
Compilation albums with various artists are a good sampler for new people too.
オールスター80'sベスト is a favorite of mine.
Also 'I LOVE DANCE NUMBER VI'.
A lot of genres other than pop are featured.
