17671431 No.17671431 [Reply] [Original]

Are anime, manga, video games, VNs, LNs, figs, dolls, cosplay, doujinshi, music, and moe anthropomorphisms all there is to indulge on in "2D"/anime otaku culture?
Everything sort of feels samey and old. Fate, iM@S, Vocaloid, Touhou have been the pillars for ages. It feels like I really don't care about anything anymore. Surely there must be some other angle, some new, untapped sources of cute characters I've been overlooking.

There's Kankore, but like I said, you basically listed every medium that exists, not only within otaku culture, but outside of it. The only thing I can think of that otaku culture doesn't really do is stage play, though you could argue idols could be lumped in there. Rather than trying to further expand the breadth of your interests, it would probably be better to go deeper into a single thing.

There are plays of stuff. Anime usually. I don't know if that's otaku culture, but stuff from Precure to Utena
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2HQwzD-LS4

Series sometimes have voice actors do little plays during the meet up/gatherings/stage performances related to the series. (I don't know what these things are called, but the things where they have fans come and the actors talk about their work on the series on stage) There are also the voice drama type specials that come with stuff sometimes. I've barely been able to bring myself to care about character songs though, let alone audio dramas, even if they do sometimes reveal esoteric canon info about a particular series.

Now that I think about it, I wish one of those MMD series like Tesagure and GDGD fairies and Naria Girls would be about the actors putting on actual little plays, a different one per episode, though still ad libbing after being given a general idea of how the acts should play out.

There are only two paths left for you.
Die, or accept the real world.
You are in the same spot I found myself years ago. Its the end of the line, now you need to take a decisione or wallowing indefinitely in an existential limbo.
There is no wrong choice, just different things to leave behind.

Why do you need to get into "big things"? There are thousands and thousands of anime, manga, VNs, etc that you've never experienced before. Learn Japanese and that number expands dramatically. Even if they stop making otaku media tomorrow you will never run out of new stuff to experience as long as you have an internet connection.

It's not a matter of enjoying them, it's a matter of them dominating otaku culture (e.g. doujin works, parodies, cameos, niconico videos) and not many other notable icons appearing alongside or replacing them. Fucking Ascension of the Metatron was the closest thing I've seen to something becoming an otaku fixture. I want them to disappear and be replaced by the next evangelion or digicharat or whatever.

>There is no wrong choice, just different things to leave behind.

This guy is right... Well, basically anyway. By that logic, there's actually 3 choices: die, accept the real world, or wallow in existential limbo.

I've been wallowing in existential limbo for about a year now. Of course in that time I've found a few good anime, games and other things I didn't know existed, but it's been nowhere near like the earlier years of my life where good games/whatever flowed into my life like a river. There's no backlog for me, and most of my free time this past year has been spent either on /jp/ or replaying/rewatching stuff(which is only fun for so long).

I've started working out(though really it's not for "those gainz", I'm just trying to stay in shape), I've considered trying to play guitar, I've thought about a lot of things. I have no idea what I'm going to be doing in a year, but I know that otaku culture doesn't have much left for me... Which saddens me.

I still don't understand why people talk about Virtual Reality as if it was in the future, yet to happen. Allow me to be crystal clear: VR has been available for anyone who can pay for it for YEARS now. And there already is so much eroge, VN and dating sims that you couldn't play them all even if you had all the time in the world. I do "create" stuff. I started trying to draw in the early 2000s, then the moe wave hit and I felt my 90s/early 2000s group of mismatched people on an adventure ideas were outdated and gave up on it. I came up with a bunch of ideas that tended to resolve to magical girls and/or harems before working on an idea I liked that's best described as SRW but with schoolgirls instead of mechs, but then Kancolle got popular and I don't really want to work on it anymore lest people think it's too similar, also I feel like their uniforms would be perceived as too generic, since one of the things that bothers me even about Kancolle is that they all look kinda samey. Using uniforms that are intended to be uniforms that look the same per faction along with generic mass production GM types basically being clones of each other seems like it wouldn't work out that well.

A more recent idea about a fantasy world is one I really like, but given the main characters are demihuman type races mostly interacting with demihuman races, if I ever go forward with it, I have to make extra sure it isn't associated with monstergirl trash and squarely remains its vaguely D&D with a few JRPG influences world.

My latest idea is just simply about catgirls but in thinking too much about it, I became disillusioned with animal ear girls in general. (the theme sometimes dips into the ethics of keeping them as pets when they're nearly human in intelligence and genetics) Although, I'd already been bothered since Dog Days about things regarding racial sensitivity in that world; whether it's really okay to call them cats and dogs even if they refer to themselves as such, what it would be like if some of them were brought to earth, how the maid characters would respond to being treated as pets by humans, having been servile to begin with, how Rico would be if she were treated as a pet despite being more intelligent than average humans and having had a high status, whether a normal human would actually mind being a pet since it's basically being a child but more respected, and ultimately if there's even a difference between a kemonomimi girl and a normal human girl who will go meow if you want her to. I came to the conclusion that it's just a racial fetish just like liking asian eyes or brown skin or blonde hair or something.

Besides that, my biggest problem is writing anything besides outlines and details. i.e. the actual story part. If I ever figure that out, I might just write a simple story I had about a catgirl reversed harem(not reverse as in male harem but reverse as in the girls are the protagonists rather than potential heroines) that probably spawned from that disillusionment I mentioned.

I also feel intense regret over the dozens of characters I've created that are nothing more than a single fading sketch in a pile of papers.

I haven't really read all the posts in this thread but whenever someone comes up saying things like "Wow X and Y have become boring I'm tired what to do now", they need to realize the problem always comes from them, as simple as this. Medias, arts, enjoyments, however you name them, those things are taken subjectively from a person to another, you cannot put the blame on them.

Anon is right here >>17690820 >>17693380.
You need to treat medias as fuel for your own endeavors and not as sole pillar to sustain and keep you going. You need to find your own flame and keep it lit, because you can't know when the ones you picked up along the way might stop shining light your way.
