Why does Japan prefer Mario over Sonic?

Is it because Japan likes easy mode?

Mario:
- Enemies that launch projectiles come late in the game
- Bosses take very few hits to die. Usually 3.
- You are rewarded for playing well with extra lives

Sonic:
- Projectile launching enemies are in the game from the first level
- Bosses take 6-8 hits to die
- You are rewarded for playing well with bonus levels

Mario is simple and straightforward. In Sonic you have like 100 routes from start to end in every level. Sonic looks like some dumb animal, Mario looks like a cool Italian guy who doesn't afraid of anything.

Maybe it's because only 4-5 games out of the whole Sonic franchise are actually good.

It's the biggest hit-or-miss, either one of the most awesome fast-paced platformers, or just...bad games.

Did you only ever play the first Super Mario Bros? Every other game has projectiles up the ass.

If anything, I'd say the Mario games are harder because you can't just keep grabbing the same ring over and over again to stay alive, or spindash to bowl over enemies. Some enemies aren't beatable at all if you don't have a Fire Flower or a different powerup.

But really, does Japan give a shit about the old Sonic games? You still see all these hacks and random things come out for the NES / SNES Mario games but never for the Sonic ones, so I'm assuming it was never that popular there.

Super Mario Bros is actually faster paced than Sonic 1, in terms of how fast you have to make meaningful decisions, rather than scrolling speed. For a game supposedly based around speed, Sonic 1 features a hell of a lot of waiting. Sonic 2 is slightly better, but compared to Super Mario Bros 3 it is nothing. Mario series is more popular because it is better.

You know how the Genesis/Mega Drive was popular in the west while the TurboGrafx/PC-Engine was a big flop?

Well, in Japan, it was the exact opposite. The PCE came out a while before the Mega Drive (unlike in the US, where both came out at the same time) and had a lot of shmups and shit that appealed to Japanese gamers. The CD add-on allowed for RPGs with fully animated cutscenes and voice acting, which the Mega Drive wouldn't replicate for a while (and when it finally did, it sucked).

...you know, I always wondered about this scene. When Mario tosses Bowser off the stage he calls him by name. Mario (and all the other Mushroom Kingdom characters with voice acting) still speak in English in Japan. Was there a separate clip recorded where Mario calls him Koopa? I've never heard it.
