Not the same anon as above, but I'm guessing from the responses that translating doujinshi is not particularly encouraged when you "only" know the meaning of roughly 90% of the dialogue.
My only defense is that most the stuff I translate is old and unlikely to ever get translated anyway, and it's not like I'm getting paid for it.

Not sure whether to take that as a compliment or not.
I mean it's not like you should at all rely on me to completely understand the source material (I am translating for a reason after all: for practice with the language, since I'll need to look up terms and words anyway) but while EOPs sure as fuck wouldn't know the difference between an accurate translation and a rewrite, I try to at least put my spirit into translating the nuance and meaning without trying to use cliched words or falling into literal translation tropes.

I can only imagine how much fun it must be to translate anything with audio. If a character says モーニングコール then people are bound to shit themselves when it gets accurately translated to as "wakeup call."

I know people here like to mock EOPs, and personally I don't care about them either, but I find it disrespectful toward the artists. Almost every Onanie Master Kurosawa or Made in Abyss (well, not so much now that there's an anime adaptation) fan in the West reads garbage translations that somehow manage to fuck up basic sentences.

That's a big part of why I'm learning moon. Seeing what Nintendo did to Fire Emblem Fates' translation was the last straw. It's not even that I really wanted to play the game, or that the original is significantly better. It's just that they made literally thousands of changes to the game for no reason, and I'd never even know the difference if it hadn't been shown to me firsthand. Blew me away.

But the fact remains that a big company completely rewrote a massive chunk of text in a game, and I don't want to deal with that in the future. There are three main types of 音読み that were imported from Chinese: 呉音（ごおん）　漢音（かんおん）　唐音（とうおん）

漢音 were readings that were brought back to Japan by emissaries sent to the Tang Dynasty to study Chinese readings during the Nara and early Heian periods. They are probably based on the pronunciation used around the capital Chang'an. These became the most commonly used 音読み today and compared to the other kinds they are the most regular. Because they were considered to be more accurate than the older original readings, those readings were given the name 呉音 (mistaken sound) at this time.

唐音 were readings that were imported even later from the Song Dynasty, starting in the Kamakura Period. They came from various sources, but especially monks who went to China to study Zen Buddhism during that time. These are the least commonly used readings, but they are also seen in some common everyday words like 椅子, 蒲団, 水団. They sound the closest to modern Chinese.

There are also 慣用音 readings that are 音読み but not actually Chinese, like the reading ちゃ for 茶.

Oh, okay, I think I get it now, I didn't know what a nesica card was. The second image is saying that there's no data for that game on the card and is asking if you want to create some, so I assume that's you trying to do it on your new card.

- Get an unused new card
- Login at ttp://nesica.net
- Press the "再発行予約" button
- Type in the serial number in the "引継先のSERIAL No." field, the last game you played with the card you lost under the "最終プレイゲーム" field, and the date that was (Japanese date) for the "最終プレイ日" field / fill out the form etc, then press the "再発行予約" button to send the request.
- Confirm within 24 hours by bringing the new card you just sent in the request with to a machine and, if all went well, follow the procedures on the screen to transfer the old data to the new card. (You might want to get a Japanese person that can speak English to help you with this part)

I'd save this response b/c I imagine this convo chain will get nuked since it isn't really too on-topic.

I'm not too sure what you mean by this. To my understanding, all you need to do is log in on the site with the email or ID you had for the old card, and follow the procedure in my previous post using a brand new unregistered/unused card. I may be missing some info on this though b/c I don't really know much about these cards.

Is there a different, more appropriate thread we can continue the convo in? Because I don't wanna shit up the thread too much with this.

What's your criteria for mining where you mine 200 words a day? I generally only mine words I don't see often (or at all) that guessed incorrectly upon seeing, words with new kanji, and words/phrases with tricky readings. It makes the deck a fair bit more challenging to have a high retention on, but I'd rather that than have a ton more reviews/new cards to sift through that I don't need flashcards for.

I mine almost everything. If it's a word with familiar kanji and clear meaning, I don't mine it, though. If I can read it on my first time seeing it in Anki (which is quite a bit later than my first encounter mining the word), then I delete it.

I choose その as an example, because it's what I had in front of me when I was writing the post. Yomichan appears to have similar problems with many words written in kana, but even when it's word written in kanji, it sometimes chooses some longer names and stuff like that, which makes yomichan pain to use for me.

What's a good way to practice numbers?
If not written with standard numerals it takes me a second to process anything higher than 三 and when spoken I need to completely pause and figure out each numeral one by one.

Well, it is useful to know the social status of the words you use. Swearing for the sake of swearing is dumb, but so is being completely oblivious to whether or not the words you're using are considered "foul". I don't know how much that contradicts what you're saying, though.

Japanese grew with extremely high language diversity between politeness and rudeness, that's why you won't refer to yourself as 俺 while talking to the emperor. Like people have said earlier, there are definitely words that get censored in japanese. I do not know, pure KJT yields the result of allowing the learner to know, in under 3 months, all of the core kanji. Kodansha can also yield similar results. Of course, you won't know all of the readings or much vocab at all, but when you do begin to learn vocab, all you have to do is remember which one you put where, as you already know the kanji itself. Considering the relatively minor time investment, it seems like a great advantage. One essentially is able to acquire the advantage that Chinese learners have with learning Japanese in only a few months. Knowing the kanji and their general meaning is a great advantage.

Well, the problem is that many people tried RTK because they considered it absolutely necessary for studying Japanese and burned out doing it.

To me something similar happened and I put off studying grammar and proper vocab for too long and haven't finished RTK all the same. So after spending significant amount of time like this, I ended up knowing nothing but hiragana, katakana and 'meanings' of like ~1100 kanji which was useless on it's own.

The problem with RTK is that on it's own it doesn't bring you closer to understanding Japanese at all. Many propagated it as something to learn before learning even the most basic grammar and vocab and I believe that's not quite necessary.

I think KKLC is very useful, but goddamn does it become a grind. I've switched from doing mnemonics + vocab to just using the mnemonics, that increased my efficiency a lot. Actually that's the way Heisig advocates in his book, divide and conquer, and I've found it helps me remember characters better and has me wasting less time writing out compounds that I'm not really studying. Since I started doing that 6 days ago, I went from around kanji #475 to #875 in a week or so. But doing 50-100 kanji a day is kinda brutal and not interesting, I'm keeping at it because I know once I'm done in 3-5 weeks I'll be happy I finished the whole thing. I'm still getting in 1-3 hours of reading a day, too, but I've put a hold on other vocab/grammar related study until I power through this.

Well, rikaisama allows me to have both dictionaries and switch between them by hitting enter. I like this approach, because it's often clear enough that some word is name and you can check pronunciation of names quickly.

Yomichan loads all those dictionaries to one database if I guess correctly. I understand that I could probably use just JMDICT and lookup individual names in external dictionary and perhaps note them somewhere. It's just not the way I am used to do things with rikaisama. Just ignore the vocabulary in KKLC. You will need a mining deck either way so might as well make one. The KKLC vocab is horribly arbitrary and I guarantee you you will never need a lot of those words. If you're doing KKLC I heavily recommend reviewing Keyword -> Kanji and replacing the keyword with vocabulary as you acquire new words. If you want arbitrary vocabulary lists to mine words from you can just do a frequency search of Jisho for the Kanji, that way you are at least bound to find words actually used.
