As far as in-game dialogue is concerned, don't they already do that?

It's just that it feels even more mean to know that the discrimination have a theological basis. That fairies don't even HAVE a hell to go to, that they either revive or dissipate. Narumi says that her power over life forces meant she can normally erase fairies from existence. Because fairies have no souls. And that Cirno's power-up was what allowed her to survive Narumi's attacks. But to even suggest erasing a fairy is a bit mean for what is suppose to be a lawful good golem.

That is definitely the path towards gaining a soul. But there are down sides to turn into a Youkai, for one thing a Youkai can actually die. So Cino would have traded the right to resurrect herself as many times as she wants, for the right to reincarnate and eventually ascend.

It's called having a soul. The soul only exist as a concept because it is meant to surviive death.

Interestingly, Asian interpretation of the soul actually come in two flavours. The soul that is denser than air and sinks into the Earth and reused, and the soul that is lighter than air and floats off. The idea is that everyone has both souls. Youmu Konpaku basically has the denser than air half of her soul being separate to her body. This is why that soul orb isn't a separate existence, but really a part of her.

Well remember that Hourai is based on Taoism, which is an entirely separate belief system despite co-existing with Buddhism.

With Taoism, the goal is to reach immortality In the world of the living, and not to leave the world for another. Taoism does not reject Earthly pleasures and instead consider immortality the ability to enjoy life to the full. Why bother gaining a higher plain of existence if you can't have fun anymore?

In a way, the Taoist's goal is to live like a Gensokyo fairy. Do what you want, when you want, and to also live forever so you can keep doing it. Screw afterlifes or higher planes.

Note that this meant the Lunarians are very much representing the Taoist ideals. Makes sense, as the entire mythology was based on hourai medicine. The moon goddess is not a god, but a former god who lost her divinity and had to compensate by achieving immortality via a medicine.

Fairies live like Taoists because they were already immortal. While Taoists try to become immortal so they can live like Fairies. The "trying to be immortal" camp is represented by Toyosatomimi no Miko's crew.
