If you know the reading - use IME? You can tell the reading from furigana or voice over in a VN. And if you're reading something without furigana - it's probably too hard for you and you will do yourself more harm than good (assuming you're a beginner, that is, but otherwise you probably wouldn't ask this question).

I would say VNs and LNs are quite on-par in terms of vocabulary. However, take this with a grain salt, because the LN I am currently reading only has ~1900 unique kanji according to djt's netlify library. Both have aspects in which one is easier than the other, I think. For instance, words containing non-jouyou kanji are almost always written using furigana. VNs dont do this. In general, it really depends on what you're reading, so try to enjoy the content rather than arguing relative difficulty (or trying to quantify something subjective).

There are two main ways to handle the Anki problem.
The first is to sync between Ankiweb account and desktop, then while using Ankidroid, sync to that.
The second is by manually exporting the deck, with scheduling information and media, if you have any. Copy/place this collection or deck .apkg into the Android device (if you're using an iPhone, no idea). The path directory should look something like

Either way, as long as the collection or deck .apkg file is placed within the AnkiDroid folder, which will have a collection.media and backup folder, it will be able to be imported via AnkiDroid.
Within AnkiDroid itself, click on the three dots to the top right, select import and the rest should be self explanatory.

It seems to be a collection of various classic foreign books (e.g. Gulliver's Travels) translated into Japanese. The kanji count for all the books suggests that they're probably really easy (they all have about half the amount of kanji that Hanahira has), possibly intended for children as even super simple kanji/words like 子 have furigana and the word ロンドン has a TL note explaining that ロンドン is イギリスの首都。 To top it all off, each book is accompanied by numerous illustrations.

A brief glance suggests they could make for good beginner reading material.

I had the same problem. Especially with conjugation rules. Someone made an anki deck of the Tae Kim exercises that was a big help. I actually made a secondary deck for the individual rules and then used the exercise deck to gauge retention and it made a world of difference over just reading the guide over and over.

Less than 20, don't have to do genki exercises. Just have to do the kanji pages of the workbook and that only takes 5-10 minutes. Participation is mostly answering the exercises. It goes around the class so you're only answering 2-3 times the entire 2 hour span. It doesn't take much to follow along with what's going on. Classmates also trip up a lot and take a long time to answer. The biggest benefit is honestly being able to come up to my jp prof and ask any question above the material. I was reading Flyable Heart until yesterday, which started out being quite fun, even though, especially at the very beginning, some lines went completely over my head and there were quite a few that I could only just get the gist of, but about half-way through the common route it just started to get boring and I lost interest in it, hence why I decided to give Hanahira a go.

I wonder if I'm not wasting my time with Hanahira though. Compared to Flyable Heart, it's just so easy. I don't think I've been completely stumped by a single line so far. Most lines I understand with either no effort or little effort (besides looking up unknown words, obviously), and every line I've been able to at least get the gist of so far. I don't know if I'm really learning very much by reading something that doesn't give me a good challenge and leave me clueless from time to time.

I didn't immediately stop reading at that point, but that was definitely the point where I stopped having fun and started having to force myself to read it. I suppose it was only a matter of time from there on out until I dropped it.

I got as far as the beach bit, shortly after the choice where you decide who to spend time with, but I was just so bored with it by then that I couldn't force myself to read any further. It's weird because I was actually enjoying it quite a bit at the beginning and was probably doing 6+ hours of reading a day without having to force myself at all.

That was my thinking when I dropped it. Ordinarily, I hate dropping things even more than I hate watching/reading something bad. I'm the kind of person to sit through a bad movie all the way to the end just for the sake of finishing it.

But I don't think I can afford to act that way when it comes to Japanese. If I'm not enjoying what I'm reading/watching, I'm going to avoid it as much as possible, and even when I'm not avoiding it I'm going to be in a negative mindset which is not good for learning things (and could lead to me developing negative feelings towards the language itself through association in the worst case). Basically, something I'm not enjoying = something which is hindering my learning, and thus I feel I should be quite liberal about dropping things more or less as soon as I stop enjoying/being interested in them. Like you say, there's plenty of other stuff out there to read/watch instead.

anyone have any good recs for listening practice? Steve Kaufmann always talks about how he values listening practice so much and listens to shit like history audio books after only 2 months of studying etc, but is that even possible? You could try downloading subs from Kitsunekko, read through an episode until you understand it, then watch the episode for listening practice.

I think the reason development has stopped is due to Mozilla's plan to switch Firefox over to a new, less powerful add-on API in the near future.

When I was in the fifth grade, I learned them mnemonically from some website that's probably long gone. It had cute little pictures that each kana represented, and then I played so many games in Japanese that, after seeing them so many times, I just became able to recognize them.

Okay, I installed it. My thoughts compared to Rikaisama:
- Initial setup is kind of annoying since the dictionaries for the add-on don't come from another add-on which can be quickly installed like with Rikaisama, but instead have to be downloaded from the add-on's own website as .zip files (quick) and then manually installed via the add-on's options page (easy but slow). There is a silver lining to this though which is that the more add-ons you have active, the slower Firefox is, so since you don't need to install any addition add-ons when using Yomichan, using it should have less of an impact on Firefox's performance.

- EPWING dictionary upsides: Whereas with Rikaisama, EPWING dictionaries are really slow and you have to wait several seconds for the definition to show up, there is no delay at all with this add-on.

- EPWING dictionary downsides: You have to download a program from the add-on's website and convert the EPWING dictionary to another format (surprisingly quick and easy) and then manually add it to Yomichan via the add-on's options page (again, slow). The bigger problem though is that EPWING definitions display in the same pop-up as the non-EPWING definitions, which makes the Kenkyusha dictionary basically unusable as it has tons of example sentences accompanying every definition which bloats the pop-up to hell. Unlike Rikaisama's pop-ups, Yomichan's do have a scrollbar on them, making the length less of an issue, but it's still a nuisance having all that unnecessary information cluttering up the pop-up and getting in the way of the definitions (this is more the Kenkyusha dictionary's fault than the add-ons though, I guess - it would be nice if the developer made it possible to strip the example sentences from the original dictionary when converting it for use with the add-on, but I don't know if that's even possible).

- Since Yomichan doesn't have an 'automatic' mode like Rikaisama does, it means you have to either hold down the SHIFT key or hold down the middle mouse button while hovering over things to get the pop-up to show up. I guess this is the compromise that the developer had to make in order to get persistent pop-up window that you can scroll through, copy-paste text from, and so on. I think the benefits you get from this are probably worth it (it was always annoying with Rikaisama when there were too many possible definitions for a word so I had to go search it in Jisho instead to see the rest), but it will take some getting used to. The fact that looking words up takes that little bit more effort might be actually be a good way of discouraging over-reliance on the add-on, though.

- Can't use the Rikaicake dictionary add-on with it, which is a huge downside for me. There have been a number of times when the Rikaicake definition has meant the difference between me understanding a sentence and not understanding a sentence.

- It lists definitions in a vertical list instead of in a row like with Rikaisama, which makes the pop-up unnecessarily long.

- When hovering over a word written in kana, uncommon ways of writing that word in kanji are listed as separate definitions (e.g. 返る and 反る for かえる), which makes the pop-up unnecessarily long.

- It's less responsive than Rikaisama (it's slower at producing new definitions when moving between words).

Maybe it's just a matter of familiarity, but I prefer Rikaisama. Since it won't work for much longer though, I guess I'll have to get used to using this instead...

It's true that most of the definitions in Rikaicake are basically just slightly changed versions of EDICT definitions which don't help at all, but there are a few cases where it plasters over a gap in EDICT's coverage. Still, if it means him having to write out some custom script to convert it, I can see why he doesn't think it's worth it.

Maybe in those cases where EDICT fails, the J-J EPWING dictionaries would also fill the gap anyway. Speaking of which, I hope he adds support for the 広辞苑 one at some point.

Okay, some more thoughts after playing around with it a bit more.

I don't really mind the EPWING thing since they didn't work well on Rikaisama either, and honestly the EDICT definitions are just a lot more convenient for their conciseness. There are dedicated programs for EPWING dictionaries like Qolibri and EBView which are a lot more appropriate.

With regards to separating definitions onto separate lines, I have mixed feelings now. I like that definitions which are actually different senses of the word are separated, like they are on Jisho.org, but I don't like that meanings within the same sense are also put onto separate lines instead of separated by commas or semi-colons. Pic related. This could be solved, I think, if the author let people customise the appearance of the pop-up in the add-on's option menu (this would be a good feature in general since you could change the background colour, font colour, font size, etc. if you don't like the default style).

Also, a tip: Don't use the name dictionary (or leave it turned off and then manually enable it only in cases where you need it to check the common readings of a name with no furigana accompanying it). If you hover over kana with the name dictionary activated, it will bury actual words under a sea of names with written in different kanji.

The problem is that you still think in terms like potential form and passive form. The auxiliary verb られる can have both passive and potential meanings, but if you think about it - 僕はハンバーガが食べられない I can't eat hamburgers, as for me hamburgers are not eaten - there isn't really a difference, it's just a problem with translation.
五段 verbs have special 可能動詞 potential verb versions that are only potential and not passive or spontaneous, but those are separate from 食べられる or 見られる, which are not the "potential forms" of those verbs at all, just 未然形+られる. There is no such thing as a potential form in Japanese.

I've hit a roadblock in my studies and I want to know how to move beyond N1
N1 had a vocab list collected from past N1 exams which was easy since all I had to do was study these premade decks with the, but beyond this I'm trying to mine new vocab for things above N1 yet are still in the daily vernacular

Having used both, I like KKLC the best, because the graphemes are consistent in most of the entries. But I agree with you that some of the mnemonics are bad, which is why it's best to make your own mnemonics (like what RTK instructed us to do) or steal them like what you suggested. Way, way, way in the past when I took English classes, the advanced courses were all about reading comprehension and text analysis. One of the many techniques one uses for reading stuff in a limited amount of time are both skimming and scanning. What someone else once shared with me though is that they only add words which fall under a certain frequency of usage. The context was using the auto-import feature of Rikaisama but the frequency data displays even if not using the auto-import feature.
Selecting an arbitrary upper limit to the frequency value and not adding words which fall above this value one way you could go about it.

I have no personal experience with this approach but my method is to add any unknown words from what I'm reading, which isn't really what you're after.

Hey lads. I have a question for anyone who can answer it.

So, I'm struggling with entering into kanji. I know I need to learn both the オンよみ　AND　くんよみ. However, in some cases there are literally 10+ of each. That's a little bit much, how do I know which ones to learn?

As an example:

Which reading am I supposed to put? I assume because it's spoken as 「なま」or 「セイ」 because when I use my IME, those are the two that convert into 生 however, is that the way to tell or is there a different/better way?

Learn the words that use them - now you know the readings. Once I skimmed through the whole jouyou list to find every "official" reading and learned at least one word with each (and after doing core and couple months of reading there was like 20 of them or so). Just use Tae Kim's grammar guide until you're good enough that you need more resources. For kanji use KKLC. Learn readings with vocabulary and your mind will naturally learn to read compounds.

Read the whole thing once so you know where everything is.Then focus on section 3 and start reading real material and refer to other sections. It'll get easier with time. Don't expect to understand anything 100% from the get go... just get a gist of what's going on and move forward. It's easier if you first pick material you've read in english or your native language.

The first result in Google is actually from a thread on some language learning site posted by a clueless gaijin who can't even tell the difference between 飲む and 読む. The only native responded told him that Japanese people don't speak like that. Wonder how many other results are also non-natives misusing the language.
