According to Clarste's translations, she's a goddess that happens to be one of the sages of Gensokyo. Her role is the protection of Gensokyo from the outside world and anything that tries to control it. Another thing is that she is referred as the goddess who lurks in the back of things so she can be seen as a god of many things like a Noh god, a star god, a mother goddess, etc, hence why she is the "hidden" goddess, in a sense where she has many faces and nobody knows her true form.

Originally revealed on Marisa's route in ULiL. Kasen revealed she had a administrator spell command override which gave her backdoor access to the Great Hakurei Barrier. Nobody could know that except one of the Gensokyan Sages who created the place.

Then later on in WaHH it's confirmed when Yukari just outright calls Kasen one of the Gensokyo Sages and her equal who created the place. It's hinted in various chapters though Kasen left after the creation of the Great Hakurei Barrier. When she returned she's pretty pissed off with Yukari's administration which goes against Kasen's intentions.

>> No.17462006

She doesn't beat them, the doors on their backs automatically teleport them out of the battlefield after enough magic power has been gathered back to the season location they had collected. To counter this, they start gathering the boundary between seasons, which means there's no location to teleport them to, they then fight Okina again and beat her. I'm not sure she's really one of the strongest per se and more one of the highest ranked and more important characters.

Nobody said it's purely powerlevel based, after all, the spellcard rules were made just for that. Looking at some fanart has made me warm up to her design to a certain extent, at first i thought she looked like an OC who is literally Junko with a recolor and a few small differences, but now that i looked at some fanart and gave her official design a closer look, she gives off a very different vibe so to speak than Junko, i can't really put it into words, does anyone else feel the same?

Definitely. Zun -is- still quite inexperienced at art compared to so many of the fandom's fanartists, so it's usually best to leave character expectations after some artists draw the newhus. Least that's how I felt with people like Junko.

They have similar hair and are both in old asian noble dress (even if from different places) so it's unavoidable that people will think they have a resemblance. The real mess-up is the front of her shirt hanging straight down the center of the sprite, I think that the silhouette of it bears a very strong resemblance to the bottom of Junko's dress. They're both powerful last boss figures, so there's going to be some overall thematic resemblance, but I think if ZUN adjusted her sprite's angle then there wouldn't be nearly as much association between the two.

Overall I think she most resembles LLS Yuuka though, particularly that you fight her two stages in a row, that the first time she's in a non-serious mode and holding a prop of sorts, and second time in a proper battle. Also that her first boss theme is better than her second.

One thing you have to realise is that she physically is surprisingly accurate to Buddhist canon. The hat, the hunting boots, the Big Dipper, and the drum she is holding are all official descriptors of Matarajin.

Compare to her, Junko had next to no physical similarities with her own historical origins.

Yes? That's what I was referring to. Nothing about "who cares what the incident did and why". She in fact mentions how Okina SHOULD have done things instead, by carrying out regular job interviews. Also again, Okina herself agrees with her saying it's beyond human comprehension. This has nothing to do with training considering there's zero power involved as Reimu trashed Okina's powered up form. Is Aya also a dumb for being "outsmarted" by a power she had no idea about?
>Not to mention even a trick that teleports you out is dangerous when your entire job needs you being there,
Obviously, but what matters is that it's just a trick and the issue was solved, regardless of whom she needed help from.

You're making mountains out of molehills, since when is she not allowed to get help from others to solve an issue? Have you not read the manga? Or that "Cirno", making it abundantly clear she has something up her sleeve, flat-out tells "Eirin" that "I can make gaps and you have a gap on you and you can't possibly win because I put a gap on you"? And, despite all of this, "Eirin" ignores the blatant warning signs "Cirno" is putting up, and tries to fight her like normal?

Yes, in that case "Cirno" would, relatively speaking, be smarter than "Eirin".

They would have become best of friends if we are talking about the historical Prince Shōtoku. But the Touhou version is different and it just doesn't mix well. >"Eirin" that "I can make gaps and you have a gap on you and you can't possibly win because I put a gap on you"?
There's nothing to say that this isn't just someone bragging about their abilities. And gaps are a known, beatable concept. This is about Cirno suddenly adquiring these powers without telling anyone hence why it'd even work on someone. Plus the way Okina is beaten is still while having a door on the heroine's back so she was wrong about that statement.

Previous bosses have also talked condescendingly to the heroine and still lost. There's nothing wrong in trying to beat her because you either succeed or you try to find out how to after seeing what she can do. What are you saying, that the heroine shouldn't have fought her? Trusted her enemy's words (which turned out to be wrong as said before)? Cowardly ran away? Because there's absolutely nothing they could do at that point even if they learned about what the doors do prior to being teleported out.

And that's the thing, Okina was beaten in the end, so what's this whole ordeal about?

Well Reimu got help from Yukari.
Maria didn't get help, she worked out how to win on her own.
I am not sure but I think Aya figured it out on her own too.

Cirno? Cirno had no idea what she was dealing with. Goddess Eternity, disguised as a fairy, helped Cirno out so she could safely re-engage with EXTRA stage. Cirno never once figure out how her gap-between-seasons is. It was Okina vs Eternity, known foes of the past.

Stop thinking Junko's purification of Clownpiece increased her power. Junko refined her into a being of sheer lifeforce. She herself is simply powerful (of course she is, she's the primary henchman of the strongest character in the series), but the lifeforce aspect made her literally unapproachable for Lunarians. I dunno why this has been so often confused. I'd say there's much reason to believe X (read: any notable person) is stronger than Yukari. I understand that she's been in the fandom for a long time, her powers are wild, and she talks a big game, but in the same canon she's been canonically defeated by awful moonbitches (twice sorta?), is stated to not be as strong as a number of folks such as Hecatia, and seems mostly about working behind the scenes rather than fighting (sort of like Okina? but Okina likes to actually show off her power, whereas Yukari technically only did that once to Tenshi and I'm pretty sure Tenshi beat her later to prove a point anyway, because the skies of Gensokyo are full of cunts). I think it's fine to think of Yukari as strong and influential and shit, but I don't see why people cling to the thought that she's the strongEST. Hell, it doesn't even matter in a world where victory is governed by grace and beauty of danmaku as well as chance. And in a world where many are proven tougher than her. It's cooler to think of her as not THAT strong, but still an incredible threat for her planning and schemes.

You mean ALSO during incidents?

It's not as though the manga don't show battles, but it sounds like battles either happen between friends or to settle disputes. I swear I recall...Yukari or some other character mentioning that she had a run in with multiple heroines, not as if she fought them frequently.

There are also weird inconsistencies showing that bits of canon from multiple endings are made into the "true route", such as Reimu having a branch Moriya shrine opened on her property.

And lastly we know from the intro to every game's story that all the heroines DO go out to resolve the incident. So basically, I see more reason to believe they all at least do try rather than thinking they don't, and only one ever does all the work.

Don't play dumb, you very well know the matches in the versus games can happen for no reason whatsoever. See: 99% of the matches in PoFV where so much as meeting instantly means battle. Take a look at these riveting conversations for example:

I'm not playing dumb, but straight up, the humans in the series pretty much prefer not getting into fights until some weird shit happens and they have to go out to fight people.

There's also the case that if a human and youkai come across one another, they'll PROBABLY fight, but at the same time we frequently see outside of the games that hell, they probably won't.

But regardless I don't really see the point you're making because, you're not really going after my points, just sticking to saying "well maybe they met after the games" even though I have more reason to believe they probably would meet DURING the games. Hell, another point: most of the time in extra stories the characters come together and talk about how the events of the main game, and then it says "they set off to find something or other, and SHE was there..." as if they all indeed tried to fight her, but they didn't all necessarily succeed.

Reimu says in SWR during Marisa's story, prior to Marisa even knowing there's an incident, that she has no idea why they just even fought. In other words there doesn't have be a reason for fights, it's just the usual dumb scenarios that all fighting games have. But it's part of the series' story regardless.
>There's also the case that if a human and youkai come across one another, they'll PROBABLY fight, but at the same time we frequently see outside of the games that hell, they probably won't.
This isn't about it happening every single time, this is about the fact that it happens often, usually for stupid reasons, and the fighting games are absolute proof of that. Hell even if there's an incident happening, the reason for fighting someone doesn't even have to be related to stopping the incident, as mentioned in the above example.

>Hell, another point: most of the time in extra stories the characters come together and talk about how the events of the main game, and then it says "they set off to find something or other"
That doesn't mean they even got to the final boss. All of their knowledge can be explained by the fact that not only do endings can involve having tea parties with the final boss and friends, but also every extra story is about them talking about the incident. TD's for example starts with Reimu describing Miko's house (which she came inside in her regular ending) and Marisa asking how can she sneak in. Later on Reimu explains why the Myouren temple would have been built atop Miko's mausoleum and Futo's beliefs that could cause a holy war while Marisa is clueless to the point where she didn't even know Miko's crew could be Byakuren's enemies. It comes out as Marisa not having even reached stage 5, if she left at all.

I said I didn't remember that clearly. I'd have cited it if I could.

It kind of sounds like you're agreeing with me, also, since my point was "canon is all over the place so why wouldn't it be possible for all the girls to get to X?". I did claim that it was more likely always the case, but what I really mean is that we just don't know, and it usually seems like most of the characters get to a certain place. And to speak of extras again, LoLKs talks about Sagume meeting the humans again and asking for their help. Despite that, I'm pretty sure Reisen is the canon of LoLK.

So, I think what this comes down to is that you mainly want to argue with me over something because I don't really see what value there is in defending this silliness. The games are abstracted (from the multiple endings, to the implied interactions, to the fact that spell card duels look nothing like they're supposed to), I think it's probable that the heroines often meet all the bosses over the course of the games. Sure, I'll say it's not always, but at the same time don't really see why it wouldn't be often. I'd also say, "well, never outside the games or in sequels do we see characters noting they met eachother some random time rather than eh you know what fuck it, I don't care that much about this. I just think you're wrong about your thoughts on things.

Well don't just claim something so important if you can't back it up.

>It kind of sounds like you're agreeing with me
I agree with you on the "all heroines set out" because as you said, the prologue and extra backstory imply everyone leaves. However I am saying that that doesn't mean they even so much as reach the final boss, or in TD's case, even reach stage 5. And that all their knowledge about the characters comes from talking about it with their friends in the extra backstory and later on in future meetings, like how everyone got to meet Miko in HM (or rather Mamizou pretending to be her for the most part).

>The games are abstracted (from the multiple endings
There is. But like most (non-dating sim) videogames with multiple endings, only one of them is canon. ZUN points out in the books how it's usually Reimu, with the exceptions so far being UFO and most likely LoLK. Also in the multiplayer games apparently all routes happen, just at different times.

All I'm saying is that it doesn't seem like all characters even reach the stage 6 boss everytime, TD being the most obvious example. The characters learn about the game's remaining bosses by talking to their friends and later meeting said bosses. Is that so outlandish to believe?

It's quite the opposite.

EX-Okina is actually a bit weaker storywise. She has to fight without any of the season power boosts she has.

Also Cirno's win is a series of extremely lucky coincidences, but Okina also notes a few interesting things. One is TH16 Cirno has been unconsciously siphoning power from Eternity without realizing it, Eternity due to what she represents is apparently a natural enemy of Okina's who directly counters her. The second is that Cirno in TH16 actually seems slightly out of it, she notes Cirno is almost moving entirely on impulse like some kind of instinct and the power up has pretty much become Cirno.

It's in Aya's ending.

Aya has a long chat admitting she lost to Okina and to specifically ask Hatate to use her power to spy on and find a way for her to defeat Okina and even Hatate points out how rare it is to see a serious Aya out for a fight.

In Tengu society the mere existence of Okina as the God of Hindrances is apparently a huge issue. In Gensokyo lore the current Tengu split from another group of Ancient Tengu they consider sworn enemies and evil whom Okina is the god of. The Ancient Tengu have been brought up once or twice in the mangas I think so it might be hinting at us finally meeting Tenma in the near future.

It's basically another take on how there are two types of Tengu in myth. The Japanese Mountain Tengu who are seen as benevolent and Buddhist Tengu who hide amongst humans and mean evil/harm on everyone. Far as Gensokyo is concerned they're not two faces of the same entity as often but two actual races.

Thanks for that, this is interesting info and it's nice to see that ZUN hasn't forgotten about Hatate yet.

Are you sure Okina belong to the evil side? Remember, the "evil Tengu" are evil because they fight against Buddhism. Okina is a literal Buddhist deity, and being "God of Hinderance" meant "God who stops bad things".

No matter how nice the Gensokyo Tengu seem to be, it is a fact that they are lead by literal Oni. And Buddhism traditionally portray Oni as villains. So the Tengu clan Aya belong to is most likely "meant" to be of the evil clan, even if they are not portrayed as such.

After stage 4, Narumi points out that Cirno has a door on her back and when Cirno tries to touch it, she somehow gets sucked through it into stage 5. This means she entered the door on her own back and the door somehow stayed attached to her in the process
