Any of you into ukiyo-e?

Only the ones depicting deviant sex acts with animals.

OP here. Gosh, it sure would be nice if 4chan had a board about Japan.

It would never work. I'll nip that idea in the bud.

Would you go to a board about America and then complain if people weren't interested in discussing the disputed presidential election of 1876?

That shit was pretty heated, man.

No, but I'd be pissed as hell if I went to a board about America and found that nobody wanted to talk about jazz.

That makes me wonder if anyone in /mu/ would want to talk about jazz.

/mu/ talks about jazz all the time. Once some faggot even put up a download on /rs/, advertised it as a DM album, while in reality it was jazz. I raged.

I like Uikyo-e. But I especially the Muzan-e works of Yoshitoshi. Even in the 1860s, Japan was giving us the best in grotesque erotica.

But really, I enjoy how stylized this stuff was, especially in comparison to European art. It also seems like an interesting time to be alive.

I also like how the style ended up influencing European art, instead of the other way around. Google "japonisme" and you'll see what I mean. This site also has some beautiful examples: http://lotusgreenfotos.blogspot.com/2007_06_01_archive.html

Yeah, as long as you weren't a peasant farmer, life in Edo period Japan was probably quite nice. Especially in the city of Edo itself, during the 1800's. Large, civilized city, cleaner and safer than Europe's cities, with lots of things to enjoy. By the way, the first tentacle porn in from 1820: the Dream of the Fisherman's Wife

I still can't see why Europeans thought they were the shit because they came from a country that pumped the byproducts of burning coal into their air because they wanted cheaper textiles...
Meanwhile, Japan was producing better materials, at the exact rate it needed them, and not ruining the environment in the process. Who was backwards?

>Yeah, as long as you weren't a peasant farmer, life in Edo period Japan was probably quite nice

There were a large number of urban riots during that period, so I doubt being a lower-class city-dweller was particularly peachy.
