Are you a shill or an employee? The release contains wrong TL, bad grammar (which, by the way, is one of the errors shown on the screenshot you are replying to and calling it "punctuation"), typos, missing/extra commas, and wrong honorifics (this I especially don't understand. There are literally fucking rules for honorific usage in this school. Don't put them where they don't belong.)
I am not saying the whole release is bad, just that this is fan TL level. Though, obviously, there are many fan TLs which are better than this, considering every route I've read has all the mistakes listed above.
Also, I didn't post the Marika route screenshot. I'm still on Konomi route.

What's the difference between editing and TLC?

Something that I'm curious about, is the Wagamama release the exact same as in Japan or is it a reduced mosaic like minori's releases? Kinda funny if it was the latter and no one cares, but when minori does it, it's bloody murder.

Nice surprise box. I'm not going to hold back just because you think only SP is supposed to be shittalked here. I will criticize a bad translation, be it fan TL or an official release. They are asking money for this translation. I am pointing out clear undisputable mistakes, which can make others decide whether it's worth the $35. That's all. It has nothing to do with my enjoyment of the VN.

Is there anything from the current hints?

Dominant with nan italicized.

Saying they have a number of titles for romance, science fiction, and fantasy.

Mentions of rocket science and rocketing up the list.

More entries in popular series. Funbag Fantasy Gaiden was already announced, but that still leaves room for at least one more.

A title with a bit of a historical bent. Most likely something historical with the characters made female. Sengoku Rance or a Baseson title are possible.

Something old. Damekoi was already announced.

Something new. Space Live was already announced.

Something borrowed. Is ambiguous. Could mean Marina or where they borrowed Itaru from Key. Could be something now announced yet.

Something BLue… Most likely a BL title. Someone mentioned a possible hint that came from a staff member after Hashihime was announced, so there could be another BL title this year. My bet is Room No. 9.

The marriage hint was already fulfilled by both Magical Marriage Lunatics and Sweet Young Bride.

Is true, though.

I mean, I read and enjoyed the fandisc regardless, but I still don't think even pedantic criticism is invalid. I, too, noticed more than a few grammatical mistakes which were a bit glaring. As well as a few lines which didn't seem to make sense in context, which could be anything from a mistranslation to a problem with the original script that was translated directly. Who knows? Nothing that would ruin a read, but it can kind of take you out of it.

I would just like to add that both the recent PE fandisc and DS seem to have had some pretty glaring issues in its QC (DS more so, since it wasn't limited to grammar/typos/etc.)

Anyway, I'm not saying the errors shouldn't be pointed out. It's just that people so far are over-dramatizing because of really minor stuff. Third game has Marina loaned to her ex-boyfriend, because her husband wants to intensify the netorase. The ex-boyfriend still loves Marina, but purposely takes things too far so that the couple will end their netorase play, because he views it as harmful. Sekai announced French translations of more than a half dozen titles (all doujin stuff) at Otakuthon, but nothing in the way of new announcements.

Something like Gahkthun really isn't at risk even if Steam restricted their standards a tad, as it was able to secure an ESRB-M rating, and MG would go back to getting ESRB ratings if they were forced to for other titles (and others would likely follow them). Something like House Party got push back, though that was easily into ESRB AO territory and was pushing the legal definition of porn, but even then despite the broad news coverage a patch happened to be perfectly fine solution as far as Steam was concerned.

The primary concern though would be for Steam to go after titles with official patches, although the combination of successful titles with patches (such as Nekopara) and unofficial R18 patches of titles like Skyrim make it easier said than done to enforce at this point.

Sorry if this isn't the correct place for these types of posts. I don't tend to read this thread.

Recently I've been playing this game called Hatsukoi (https://vndb.org/v750#main). I've thoroughly enjoyed it so far, and was pretty disappointed when I found out that it wasn't translated. Apparently there was a defunct translation project several years ago. However, from the scripts that have survived on tlwiki, it's a good thing it was never finished, since many of the lines are blatantly inaccurate. I'm not sure the old translator even knew what passive tense is.

All that being said, I've gotten the desire to take a stab at it myself. The problem is I am not experienced in extracting and reinserting VN scripts. There are a couple well known engines I have been able to figure out using existing tools found on the internet, but most engines are beyond me.

That brings me to my question: Does anyone here happen to be familiar with extracting an xp file? Scenario.xp seems to clearly be the file with the scripts, but I have no clue how to go about it. Again, my apologies if this isn't the correct thread for this.

Sol Press actually said they are working on a solution to offer an R18 physical release as an upgrade during the Backerkit.

They seem to be attempting to please everyone, which from a consumer standpoint is great but could easily lead to them getting in over their heads. Something like the free patch is in line with most of the companies these days, and they just have a stronger attitude than other companies ("patches should always be free" vs "We can only advertise the patch on Steam if we have it free"). Even making it HD is probably more of a requirement to deal with an older 800x600 title today. Some other things they are doing won't do much for sales and in some cases (such as offering multiple physical releases of all ages and R18 if they go through with that), will likely incur significant extra costs. Even something like honorifics, you do have a mix of preferences with the audience, but it probably won't do enough sales wise to justify the costs of the increased work on the script and the increase in technical work and testing that will be required. Even if everything works out here though, it is unlikely to be sustainable with other titles that appear to already be in the pipeline. For Sakura Sakura itself though, despite all the good will it is sure to get from going above and beyond what is normally expected, it still may truggle because it is an older not widely known title without much standing out about it, and they'll probably have a hard time breaking even with the sheer amount of Kickstarter goods being offered unless they exceed their $24k goal by a large margin. .

With regards to the Steam price though, they don't want to run into the issue of the Steam launch being cheaper than the Kickstarter, but they would be better off bumping the on Steam price to $35 and adding a 10% discount for launch than launching at $30 without a launch sale.

Unfortunately I think I'm personally at a dead end with my very limited programming knowledge unless I want to invest a ton of time learning about hex editors and shit. I left a comment on the somewhat active github of the tool that got me halfway to the goal point. The people there seem to increase the scope of the program every now and then so there's a chance they add this BCS file extension if it isn't that much of a bitch to work with.

It seems like they'd already done a newer game from the same publisher, so I think there's a decent chance the encryption style would be the same and that only an offset or something would be different. Sorry for the wordy explanation but that's basically where it stands now and I don't think there's much I can do aside from waiting and hoping for the best.

AliceSoft fans did get Evenicle announced which is a pretty big deal. It's the best non-Rance game AliceSoft has released in years and is still relatively new. If MangaGamer does want to try to sneak in Sengoku Rance this is the best and perhaps only opportunity to do so while they still have the hype and goodwill from announcing Evenicle. I do hope they give us Rance Quest+Magnum. I just don't see how they can pass up the money Sengoku Rance would bring in. Going back to translate it later doesn't make much sense so now is the time to announce it.

The Rance fan base is already used to being forced to wait. If they've stuck around this long an extra year or two probably won't drive many of them away while an official release of Sengoku Rance could bring in some new fans because of how addictive and enjoyable the game is. If Sengoku does get announced I expect some tantrums from a few loud individuals followed by begrudging acceptance.

>> No.17449535

Pushing Quest back further will kill any hype or goodwill from Evenicle.

You drastically overestimate the money Sengoku Rance will bring in because everyone has already played it in English before. And it would have to be translated from scratch again and they have already indicated that they want to stage Alicesoft releases so non-Rance/Rance/non-Rance so translating Sengoku Rance again from scratch (considering Arunaru is doing Evenicle) would push Quest back to 2019 and then 01/03/IX/X well into the 2020s.

Sengoku Rance doesn't need a retranslation and translating it again solely to try and grab money using the logic that the fans are used to waiting and will buy anyway is the perfect way to burn any good will you have.

>> No.17449559

>Sengoku Rance doesn't need a retranslation and translating it again solely to try and grab money using the logic that the fans are used to waiting and will buy anyway is the perfect way to burn any good will you have.
Not like they can contact TakaJun and buy his TL. The guy fell off the face of the internet, and it probably wouldn't be up to their standards anyway. I'd be more irritated if MG didn't re-TL it, honestly, but I have no delusions about being in the majority.

>> No.17449578

Partially agreed. I think they've indicated that they will do a re-translation in order to keep certain terms consistent. The ideal scenario is to have Evenicle released this year and somehow push out both Sengoku and Quest in mid-2018, which might be possible if Aru was already doing parts of Quest prior to the Alicesoft partnership.

I sincerely doubt that they would do a dual release of Sengoku+Quest, although I wouldn't rule out them announcing both at the same time just to let people know Quest was on the way. Even if they did a dual release though, it would be two full price standalone releases with an available bundle. It's probably in their interest to grab Sengoku though both for completion reasons and because of just how broadly known Sengoku is (well beyond the primary Alicesoft audience) thanks to having rather wide availability for years.

The amusing thing though is that even if MG picks up Sengoku Rance and gives it an outstanding localization, it will get compared to the old version where more than a handful of people who prefer the old names and titles will say they would rather play the old crap.

>> No.17449960

Does this all but confirm Sengoku Rance? Rance Quest isn't a strategy game and I doubt they would bring over a flop like Daiteikoku. Considering the hints given earlier in the year about the "historical bent" I would be shocked at this point if it wasn't Sengoku Rance.

And for all you want to go on about how people pirated back in 2009 well if it weren't for those early fan translations there wouldn't be an industry in the West.

Why was Rance VI a hyped release? Why did it sell well?
Because people who played Sengoku Rance wanted more Rance.

Why is Mangagamer entitled to customer money for providing a product that everyone already has?

>> No.17450084

It's not like piracy is even the issue, it's whether people want to pay for something they've already experienced.

A product they don't own. A product they consumed without paying for it. A product that costs money. A pirate fanbase is not worth money unless you can turn them into legitimate customers. Yes, people who pirated SR both Rance 6. But did they buy SR, the game they pirated? No. They didn't. And they should buy it, especially if they like it. Right now, it's literally impossible to buy it without importing a version in a foreign language that people who need translations can't play.

If you pirated it you should buy it. And there's nothing at all strange about wanting people to pay for something they pirated.

>> No.17450101

They can play the foreign version. Just apply the translation patch. Why is mangagamer entitled to a cut?

>> No.17450108

Actually since Sengoku Rance was not sold or licensed outside Japan there was no piracy involved.

>> No.17450109

They won't, because it's less convenient than piracy. Also, Alicesoft makes it pathologically difficult for gaijin to buy their games.

MG would be "entitled" to a cut (and remember, you personally don't have to buy it, the only thing you could potentially be losing is getting other games earlier) because they're going to have to translate the damn thing. The original TL is not acquirable, and not good enough to ask anyone to pay for even if it were.

Sengoku Rance is both the most well known title in the series by a long shot with broad recognition, which a good reason to . At the same time though, moral arguments aside MG has historically found that publishing titles that had been fan translated tends to lead to depressed sales on a given title (I believe EF in particular stands out for a lackluster initial release after being fan translated). The question is how strongly these competing things balance out, but I would think the strong recognition of Sengoku Rance (informing people the series is being officially published) is a decent reason to publish it, and having 5D through Sengoku available for purchase is a more solid foundation for proceeding forward with the series instead of telling new customers to track down a fanTL even if Quest may potentially be a bigger seller in the short term.

This is why Sengoku and Quest needs to be announced at the same time. People new to the franchise will be playing a better version (at least for the translation) of the game and long time fans will have something secured. And, even then, MG could release both games in short time to each other (3-6 months), having both reveneu in short and long term, without eating each other.

Best case scenario, of course. We, most likely, won't get it but I'm hopeful that MG knows that the Rance fanbase can be autistic.

>> No.17450170

>> No.17450175

You don't have to.

>> No.17450179

Nobody who doesn't want to play for Sengoku is going to have to do so. The only reason anyone was upset is because they think it's going to delay another translation. Obviously they should take a step back and realize that playing Sengoku illegally was something that they didn't deserve, and alicesoft doesn't owe them anything.

>> No.17450194

Its entirely possible to be unhappy with a product you wanted getting delayed for another product you don't want even if you understand why a decision was made.
And it is entirely reasonable to complain because other than not buying that is the best way to communicate. And loud complaints and depressed Sengoku sales makes a Rance Quest announcement next year more likely than Escalayer or a non Rance game.

>> No.17450216

It's entirely unreasonable to act like you get to determine what a company should do because of your personal entitlement. That's very different from merely being upset. In no way is it "milking" (>>17450017) or "unnecessary" (>>17449985) for a company (Alicesoft) to want to get money for a game out of a market that pirated the shit out of that game.

>> No.17450230

How is it unreasonable? Companies have their own priorities but so do customers.
Companies may feel like they deserve money for games that were pirated 8 years ago and morally perhaps they are right byt if customers don't want to buy a certain product from a company for whatever reason but would instead want to buy a different product from that company its reasonable to communicate that.

I bought Haruka. I bought Rance 5D and I bought Rance VI. I would buy Rance Quest or Rance 01 if they were brought over. I will not buy Sengoku Rance.

And yes it is milking by both Alicesoft and Mangagamer. They know that a Sengoku release instead of a Quest release is not what a majority of the fans in the west want but they're banking on people buying it anyway even if they have already played the game.

Your whole argument is a red herring. Alicesoft may perhaps be morally entitled to that money but moral entitlement has never been part of the business-customer relationship in any industry.

It's in the 10-15hr range? Probably closer to 10. There are 2.5 routes (there's a 3P one after you complete the other two) and a lot of endings. It was originally about 4k yen so it's more or less what you'd expect from a half-price title. The only reason I can see this being the case is if you bought the game legally before and years later it's being resold on a different platform. Nintendo is known for that and it does make certain people angry.

But if you pirate it especially something that is not AAA in the first place. It''s wrong due to the fact effort was put into it and time. Who knows? MG initially cucked Fata from SP so it's possible that they're just going with SP this time to extend the initial courtesy that Sekai gave them. Novectacle has also expressed an interest in crowdfunding post-Fata I believe. Either way, it's kind of a shame if they can't at least get the Fata localization team on this same product - Fata's TL is honestly one of the more polished one's I've read (even if the translator is a huge faggot) and some consistency with the same writer would go a long way. Still, it should be interesting. I believe Novectacle initially wanted to do a TRPG as their studio's first title anyway, as their entire team, from the writer, to the artist, and even the singer all met through their passion for D&D. Bit disappointed that their primary artist isn't working on it, though.
