I've got a problem. This is one of about 10 unsorted picture folders on my machine right now. My backlog is huge, that means it has huge guts. My individual folders aren't much better. A 2000 image folder called 4chan, a 1000 image folder in that for Touhou, etc.

My system sucks. How do you sort your crap?

If you don't mind committing some time to it, use either Windows Photo Gallery or Adobe Bridge (comes bundled with any other Adobe Software) and tag all your images. jpgs and pngs can be tagged. gifs I keep in a seperate folder. Anything else gets converted to a jpg/png.

Anime images go into the first classification that comes to mind. For example, Shuffle! goes into the Navel directory under Studio while Ginban Kaleidoscope goes into the Suzuhira Hiro directory under Artist.

Things that I can't really categorize by origin just get thrown in the big 'Pictures' folder. I try to categorize my Touhou folder by location, but I've been too lazy to sort beyond character name since SWR, so I just label it by game.

I have a pretty advanced structure.

First I go by type (pictures, books, misc. images) then style (4chan, dojin, art books, Touhou), then origin (board, Touhou character), then series/character.

I sort by moe points - animal ears, glasses, clothing, etc., giving priority to favored categories in the likely event that they overlap. And if you're complaining it's too much work, sort it WHEN you save, not after. Use a firefox plugin.

and then the fap folder

Problem was that once things went into the fap folder I never touched them again, mostly because whenever I went to go organize it I would want to fap, and then I would lose interest.

So now I just dump all the bone provoking images in the fap folder, the interesting stuff in the grab folder, and then everything else in the relevant series folder if I care about it enough.

Otherwise, I just use danbooru whenever I need a picture but can't find it on my drive

I throw everything into MOU IKKAI, and then when that gets too big I throw them all into new folders named after major thoroughfares

A single massive folder with four subfolders divided by date modified serve as a catch-all for most pictures.

A single promotional folder with all the non-worksafe stuff.

A Touhou folder where I only save Touhou pictures that I like.

I "tag" my images with the filename, which then go into their own folder, like "Touhou". Sure this sometimes leads to 70+ char monstrosities such as "ran chen yuyuko remilia utsuho yukari gap china eirin kanako suwako miko protest.png", but I know I'll be able to find them on a search (though as of yet, I've never bothered to and just used danbooru when I needed to find something, so it's a little pointless, but IF!)

And like others say, tag/sort when you save, this helps a lot.

I do a little of everything.

Wallpapers go into keyworded, if keyworded in picasa, else in unkeyworded.

General images just go to a big folder.

Comics are sorted by artist and language.

HCGs are dumped in a single folder.

VNs are sorted by English or Japanese.

Mine handles them fine, and I pretty much never look at the filenames in the folder. Actually, I never really look at the folder in general, which makes saving even more pointless, but the nagging "just in case" is always there.

Depends. I just create folders as i go. Usually I start out by just dumping things into the unsorted folder. If I notice I'm collecting a lot of a certain series, it gets it's own folder. This usually works for me, but sometimes that gets too big and I seperate it into seperate characters and dump group images in the general folder.

My touhou folder eventually hit critical mass with that, so I divided them up by game/family/group and moved the charter folders in those, along with any group pictures with them. Images with odd groups/pairings go in the general folder.

Working well so far.

Before you start sorting thousands of images, be sure to run a duplicate check on the folder. It will most likely save you time in the long run.

Regarding Touhou, I sort them by location, if the character has too many pics I make a subfolder inside it. I save them with Save Image in Folder firefox plugin, killing two birds with one stone. Visipics to check for duplicates.

I have the same problem. I have almost 4000 images that are completely unsorted, save for maybe 200-400 of them being tagged. (I've found that if I separate most themes away from the miscellaneous section of my folder, I'll never look at them again, so I've stopped doing that; seriously, I think that my Type Moon and Nanoha image collections are the only ones that I ever look at)

Sorting is for faggots with too much time on their hands, just throw them into random folders so it doesn't take forever to load a single folder and run it through a duplicate scanner every once in a while.

My old box ran XP, and then the hard drive shit out on me. Corrupted a shit ton of files, as well as my windows installation. Hoping I can still save some of my images / wallpapers / porn. But I digress.

For animu wallpapers, I normally sort by series, but if it's something I particularly like, it gets it's own folder, regardless of series. Like... Headphones, or Foxgirls. For Crossover, or multi-series images, I just go with whichever I like best. Explicit images had their own folder, so I could tell AWC to skip it when others were around.

I didn't save many non-wallpaper animu images, so I just had an "Anime" folder. Other random shit went in the... "Random" folder.

Porn was encrypted inside a Truecrypt volume, and nested. Example: Hentai --> Hetero --> Incest --> Imoutos.

I guess I'll try out the tagging system when I get my new laptop with Vista.

I only care for character pics and musics. Materials in other media are plain flat asssorted.
Just like library classifcations... Big subject goes first, then pinpointing keywords branch up.
Much like: Series -> Title -> Individual/Group

Sorted files do not necessarily mean better management.

That goes double for when I start putting them in different folders. Its best to have them all in one centralized spot with tags so that I can search for specific features, characters, series, etc.

I like to put off sorting stuff in multiple layers. At first I save images to the My Pictures root, once that starts to take like 30 seconds to load with thumbnails on I'll push it into my 4chan folders root. Once they both start filling up again I will put everything into a SortLater folder and leave it untill I have too much time on my hands. When this happens I will sort images into a corresponding folder: Animu Mango, Comics cartoons, GIFS, Pokemon, Toy, Traditional Games (which includes my touhou folders in addition to /tg/ general), Vidyah, and Wall temp (where I stow wallpapers before moving them to my official Wall Paper folder for content sorting). Now this isnt the end at all, at some point I will sort the images that I threw in all my folders into each subcategory (eg, I have character folders for each touhou). Thats about it I guess.

Can anyone top that?

Didn't read the thread, but I use the firefox addon "Save Image in Folder" that lets me select which folder an image can go in (from a submenu in the right click menu). I have folders for all common image types - one for Touhou, TM, Key, Miku, etc. For stuff that doesn't fit in the specific ones, I have them dumped in a general folder.
