It seems weird to me that buildings are just left alone until they absolutely fall apart, sometimes in the middle of a village or even a busy small town.
I would think local government would step in once a building gets dangerously run down?
Can't be very good for the value (If there is any, in some cases they might be next) of surrounding buildings either.

Besides, just because it's owned by the Yakuza doesn't mean it's used for illegal activity.
Part of what makes the Yakuza so successful is their mix of legal and illegal "enterprises" with a clear distinction between them, which means their legal sources of income will not get disturbed by police or other government actions, allowing them to maintain a steady cashflow even if under investigation.

I imagine it's like many of those old shops that hardly get any business, they are run by old people who are too old to work in the field or business. This is probably just something to supplement their pension or stave off boredom.

Probably, also depending on the season other parts of the family might be able to help out too.
Just because you are a farmer doesn't mean you have to spend every hour of daylight with a hoe tending your fields.

The boredom part is also probably true, i have found in several places groups of old people tidying up the streets and even in one place restoring remote mountain roads after storm and mudslide damage.

>Ōkawa Haruyoshi, who was seven years old and the son of the Sankebetsu village mayor at the time of the incident, grew up to become a prolific bear hunter. He swore an oath to kill ten bears for every victim of the attack. By the time he reached the age of 62, he had killed 102 bears. He then retired and constructed the bear harm cenotaph (熊害慰霊碑 Yūgai Ireihi), a shrine where people can pray for the dead villagers.
>Takayoshi, Haruyoshi's son, in 1980—after an eight-year chase—hunted down a 500 kg brown bear who was nicknamed the north sea Tarō (北海太郎 Hokkai Tarō).

Well, it was hot and humid, but the breeze coming off of the ocean felt great, and the island is so small that you can feel that breeze just about everywhere. That also kept the majority of the bugs away, so just walking around was completely comfortable. Hibiscus bushes and palm trees were everywhere along with any number of tropical plants that I'd never seen or heard of.

With the JSDF and US Navy bases around, there were ships everywhere. Since I grew up around that stuff, it was a very welcome sight.

There are countless beaches, and everywhere the water is insanely clear. The first beach I went to, I just walked out in ankle-deep water and saw some bright blue tropical fish swimming only a foot or two away.

I tried some Okinawan food - agedashi tofu with a peanut sauce and some fu-champloo. Both were delicious, but it was hard to figure out everything on the menu because of the Okinawan names. Then a woman performed some songs on her sanshin in the traditional Okinawan style. There were only 10 tables in the restaurant, so she talked to everyone and the whole place joined in on her songs.

Driving on the highway down the middle of the island was interesting, too. Whereas most of mainland Japan has Japanese cedar forests, the forests of Okinawa remain largely wild, showing a wide variety of trees throughout. Back to the coasts, and you'll see any number of mom-and-pop restaurants and roadside stands, offering fruit and snacks.

Later, I went snorkeling in some shallow water (less than a meter deep) and saw fish you'd usually see in an aquarium, sea urchins, coral, and more. Some of the fish even swam towards my fingers if I left them still enough.

Anyway, it was an excellent experience and I would love to go again, stay longer, and perhaps visit some of the smaller islands in the chain. I hope you can visit, anon, even if just for a short while. It'll surely be an experience you'll never forget.

I live in Japan now, so this was just a little four-day excursion down to Okinawa. I have traveled around other parts of the country, though - mostly around the southern areas.

A lot of the times, it's just neat to stumble across something on the side of the road. I recently found a natural carbonated spring where you can bring jugs and fill up as much as you want. I also stopped in at a somen place in the middle of nowhere. It was set up like a long table with fresh spring water flowing down the middle of it. The owner brought a colander full of somen noodles and some mentsuyu for dipping, and placed the colander in the trough of spring water. It was delicious! Plus, one time an old man doing kamishibai pulled me over out of a crowd, asked if I'd ever had mizu-ame before, and upon hearing that I hadn't, gave me a stick of it to try with a huge, toothless grin. He was so happy that I liked it and stuck around for his story.

The whole country is full of discoveries like these. It truly is a delight.

I'm here as an English teacher, but I plan on living here for the next several decades at least. I was really fortunate with my placement in that I live in a beautiful small town and my students and fellow Japanese teachers are phenomenal (for the most part). Being so recognizable can be a bit of an issue - I must be on my best behavior at all times and folks stop to talk to me quite a lot when I just want to hurry home. Other than that (and being a world away from my family), it's a dream.

When you get to the point of planning specifics for your trip, the folks over on /trv/ have some decent suggestions (if you bring something to the table yourself, not just "hey guise, wat can I do in japn?").

In this shithole tier island (PR) there are no underground cables but the cables in the poles are tidy, organized and clean; not a spaghetti mess like that. Maybe US standards play a role in that here.

The way electric poles and cables are maintained there is the absolute opposite of what you expect of them since all Japanese cities are so well planned and organized. Seems really strange.
