You need to search for the field that has your kanji in it.
It also might be deck specific (or it could be anki wide).

So say you use core2k/6k, I believe the field that contains the kanji is: Vocabulary-Kanji
The default search term for the kanji grid (kanji) should pick that up, but you might need to highlight the deck before searching.

It's under tools -> Generate Kanji Grid if that was the step you were having problems with.

Stupid, imprecise phrasing, like is sadly pretty common in Tae Kim.

It probably means it conjugates the same in non-keigo form only. But there's nothing special about those words, they conjugate like any other negative verb.

Mozilla finally accepted my addon. I made a new clipboard addon for firefox from scratch, since I couldn't get the old one to work. Turns out it was a great idea, since firefox will be dropping support for "legacy" addons after 57 (sometime in November).

Can anyone who has *finished* RTK/KKLC/some other mnemonic system tell me what their retention rate is when doing their reviews in Anki, please?

I decided to go the rote route* because I found making up mnemonics to be incredibly boring and the mechanical simplicity of rote seemed more appealing, but even 6 months down the line I'm still forgetting some kanji and really struggling to get a handful of other ones down.

I'd say about half of my fails are a result of me mixing up one card with another due to very similar keywords, but then the other half is me simply forgetting (usually only partially, but in rare cases entirely) how to write a kanji.

As you can see from pic related, my mature retention is pretty mediocre, though it varies quite a lot - some days I get 100%, while other days are like today where I'm around ~85%.

I'm debating creating a new deck and going through it with mnemonics, but I first want to know whether people who use mnemonics actually have better retention than me or not, or whether my performance is actually just normal.

*It got really painful towards the end. I really don't know how I managed to finish it because doing my reps just made me want to kill myself, but somehow I stuck it out and finished the deck.

Ah, okay, cool. I've been beating myself up about it lately thinking "I've fucked it all up and I'm gonna have to start all over again", but if people aren't having perfect retention even with mnemonics then I guess I'd just be wasting my time as you say.

Maybe my problem is not enough exposure, but kanji has been draining so much of my mental energy up to now that I've been really neglectful with regards to the rest of the language. I hope to change that now that I've finally gotten my kanji reps to <20mins a day.

I learned Japanese for Kangoku Senkan 2 but it was fairly mediocre and I didn't enjoy it that much so you could say it happened to me.

I've been holding back about this because HJGP wasn't pirated yet, but here's what I really think. DoJG is fucking awful.

The explanations sound like they were written by someone who only technically knows English and wouldn't be able to hold a sensible conversation without using weird words and grammar patterns. They're harder to understand than Rikai-ing your way through Japanese question/answer sites.

The way it uses grammatical terminology is completely nonstandard no matter whose standards you subscribe to.

With only a few exceptions, everything it covers is extremely easy to learn through exposure, and the notes are like 90% explaining grammatical correctness, or nuances that nobody will ever be able to learn through deliberate training.

It really doesn't cover that much grammar. There are very common variations on the grammar patterns it covers that are used in its example sentences, and those example sentences have translations that don't even apply the correct sense of that variation of the grammar pattern, because it's trying to showcase the """normal""" version.

The example sentences are mistranslated on a regular basis. I'm not talking about translating by the sense instead of by the word here, I'm talking about translating and ending up with a different sense.

It's split into three volumes and overpriced if you buy it legally, which some people do since it's the "bible".

When DoJG doesn't explain something explicitly, it's nearly impossible to get help about that particular thing anywhere on the English-speaking internet, because DoJG is the "bible". And people act like if it's not in DoJG, it's not real grammar, or isn't worth studying explicitly.

Where should I go for J-J explanations then?
I would drop it immediately if there was a reliable replacement, cause reading through multiple Japanese sites only to find out it's not what you were looking for takes away quite some time.

Don't get me wrong you are totally right, there are quite a few things it doesn't cover and I noticed mistakes as well, but it's nice for a quick look up "if" it has an entry to the grammar point you wanna look up of course.

Most natives know at least 3000 kanji and could easily pass N1 without studying any grammar or kanji.

The original translation is correct. The two last lines form a single sentence. The literal translation is "People of our social status does not have so much free time that we can afford to be busy with compulsory education"

The author claims he did it in 18 months, not a year, but yeah, he's probably exaggerating. I think it probably took him more like 2 years. I have no delusions that I'm going to be fluent any time soon, but the method itself clearly works when one actually sticks to it.

The method itself wasn't even really invented by the author of that site anyway. He basically just made a Japanese-focused version of Antimoon with some tweaks here and there. The method pretty much follows what Stephen Krashen says works (comprehensible input, and lots of it), and what Steve Kaufmann practices (but with the addition of SRS for added efficiency/retention).

Have I fucked myself by doing only 10 new words a day with core2k? I have been doing it for like 2-3 months now and tried to read Zettai reiiki and there is still stuff I don't know. I was failing so hard when I was doing 20 new cards a day but now I feel like my learning is better..

You're always going to find stuff you dont know even after core2k, just look up what you dont know. Since you've been doing 10 cards a day for 3 months, I'm gonna assume you're about 1k cards in. It's not a bad idea to start a mining deck right mow and add words you dont know into it until you finish core, afterwards you can delete duplicates. 10 cards/day is definitely slow, but if you cant handle 20 try 15, and increase the amount by 1 or 2 each week.

I'm having trouble understanding たりとか at the end of this. According to DOJG たり is for an inexhaustive list of actions/states, and とか the same except only for general things.

So why are both used? Or is there some other grammar I'm missing here? Why are they even being used in the first place? All I'm getting from this sentence is "a circular notice comes around". What other state would a circular notice be in?

Hard to explain but とか basically just acts upon the sentence with たり to add another layer of vagueness. The two are different in nuance but again, it's hard to explain. It basically just means "or something" or it can mean "for example" depending on context. I wouldn't worry too much about this now, this is the kind of thing that you get a feel for eventually with experience, without even trying.

Hard to say exactly without context but no I don't think it has anything to do with states. The てくる form of 回る probably means that they are talking about the 回覧板 doing one round around the community, not being in a state of continually doing the rounds (although it is, of course, but that's beside the point).
Actually translating it is hard I think because this kind of phrasing doesn't work in English, and as said I don't know the context which can affect the meaning. But if I had to try I'd say: "The circulating notice came back to us or something"

Start with RTK, finish it.

Read a lot, even if you don't understand much search for "i+1" sentences I think they're called. Sentences where you know how everything in the sentence works besides the meaning of one word. Make that sentence into an SRS card, with furigana of the sentence on the back of the card, as well as the definition of the word you didn't know. Eventually you'll want that definition to be in Japanese. Everything in Japanese.

The goal is to collect 10,000 sentences in an SRS. 10-20 sentences a day should do it in a pretty timely manner. 10 new sentences a day will get you there in 3 years.

Clearly this is something that would work if you stick to it, the only thing that is up for debate is whether RTK is worth doing.

Most people start reading when they get to about 1-2k words in core, but it honestly isn't all that different from starting to read immediately. In both cases you're gonna be looking up multiple words every sentence and in both cases it's gonna be frustrating. The difference is very small. If you understand what a sentence means then don't bother struggling to understand it from an English point of view. If you understand the sentence you can move on. All the "solidifying" you're doing by trying to systematically understand it will be pointless down the line since you'll inevitably have to unlearn all of it to understand "real Japanese."

How do you remember words you see for the first time in Anki (core) aside from simply seeing it over and over with the program?

When I first see a word, if it's not a one-character word I probably have to press "again" 5 times or more before I remember it. By the next day I've probably forgotten it and it'll take a week or so before I can recall them relatively quick, so my reviews really pile up (I only do 10 new a day which take an hour including reviews).

Does writing it out the first time you see it a couple of times help retention?

I used to be this way too, but I changed my sleep habits to be more regular, started some HIIT every other day to get that juicy BDNF.
Then before I start anki I get the heart rate up in front of a light.
The argument for exercise + memory is some evolutionary advantage to remembering what happened when escaping something dangerous(of which increase physical activity is the trigger for).
Coffee is also a good stimulant, if you are into that. I've seen a noticeable improvement in my ability to remember new words, grabbing a lot from just the previous day.

I can't see how sentence decks would be useful. You'll only read the whole sentence while you're still learning it, and after that you'll only read the first two words or less (the least amount of effort that your brain can take to know which card it is) and answer based on that. There's no point in memorizing the sentence, you might as well just substitute looking at the same sentence cards over and over again with reading more actual sentences.
Of course, individual word cards aren't perfect either, since you might get hints on which card a certain word is based on the okurigana (but this is resolved if your deck is large enough, and it's also less of a crutch when reviewing, I think).

I don't know how accurate the english translation is, but when starting out it's probably OK to do that to some extent. Just remember that translations aren't always literal. Also, if you're going to compare, don't do it sentence by sentence. Maybe read a whole chapter and double check the english translation. anyhow translation is a whole other can of worms and translating between two non-native languages is bound to result in a lot of errors so avoid it as much as you can. in the early stages there's no way around it but you'll find with time you'll understand the japanese as is without translating around and that's when the language will really start to click. good luck

I don't know whether the にも is to be treated as such (also, too, not ... either, as well, even) or is just a combination of に and も. I also don't know what the 言わない refers to. If the にも is a "too", it might be the case that sempai did not say a thing, if it's a "to sempai too", it might be the case that someone says something not to sempai.

In regards to 言わないといけない, I also don't know whether the と is an "and" or "if", whether いけない has its literal meaning of "no good" or is some kind of "must not" construction although Internet research tells me that'd be ってはいけない but you never know with slang and whatnot.

Alternatively, some other phrase I'm not familar with might be at work here. Or I am getting the basics wrong. Or I am overcomplicating things.

Does anyone have any info on how to set up the thing where you can get Anki cards made by just pressing a key on the keyboard with rikaisama or whatever it was?

Depends what you mean by "able" and what you're doing right now. If you're reading manga, switch to VNs or books to practice actual reading and reinforce the words. Without having the easy crutch to rely on you actually make an effort to remember.

You got the time line wrong. We first came to /jp/ but the mod here kept deleting the threads because "it's not /jp/ related". Then we went to /int/ as a last resort but a lot of people were unhappy because of the flags, BRs and general shittiness of the board. So eventually one of the bigger up guys told the mod on /jp/ to calm down his autism and we were allowed to make threads here. Some people stuck to /int/ (mainly the /v/ and other crossboarding people) and /a/ people migrated here.

We tried moving to /jp/ but the mod kept deleting us, yes, but that was right before we got purged from /a/.

The very moment we got purged from /a/ we were moved to /int/ because the mod had no idea that /int/ was /pol/ lite at that point in time.

A few weeks later a mod or janitor or whoever stopped deleting DJT from /jp/ when people tried moving it here, so the thread split, because /int/ was obviously a terrible place for the thread at the time, even though a lot of people ended up staying there.

There's a reddit post to help you decide when to use amazon and when to use honto/cdjapan. But you can also calculate it easily yourself. Basically amazon is better for ordering complete sets and the like, while I've found that honto.jp is best for single volumes and such.
