17319919 No.17319919 [Reply] [Original]

It's time for another annual /jaypee/ mmo discussion thread where everyone decides to play an MMO together and end up not playing anything at all.

What are you playing right now, /jp/?

What are the barriers of entry? Fees? Mechanic changes? Population? Balance? Content? Party play?

>What are the barriers of entry?
You're given a free trial of 14 days when you first sign up, after that there's a subscription system.
You also need to login to the website trough a VPN/Proxy but after that you can connect directly to the game.
>Fees?
As mentioned beforehand, the server still runs on a subscription system, I think it's around 9 dollars per month, but you're required to verify your account firsthand which requires you to make a friend with someone from Japan for the mobile SMS code.
>Mechanic changes?
Way too much to list.
>Population?
15k Unique players every day with an average of 7~8k (unfortunately spread between like 9 servers)
>Content?
Yes.
>Party play?
I'm not really certain on this, I partied with a few people in Payon dungeon but I assume I could've done most of that alone with some heavy potting, I think the "endgame" is mostly just partyplay though.

Because the more you do something, the more you exhaust its content. I mean if you're a total autist that can do the exact same thing forever and ever, fine, but I meant it's old in the sense that you've played it for years.

Additionally, being old enough in your sense means you're in the early times of a trend which causes you to miss out on later improvements to it. Like how Castlevania 1 is shit compared to the later ones. RO arguably falls into this too though, since it's old enough that the only real content is killing things over and over.

>> No.17326101

>it's old in the sense that you've played it for years.
But I haven't?
>RO arguably falls into this too though, since it's old enough that the only real content is killing things over and over.
Except this is the pull that it has on me?
I liked a lot of games but got insanely bored of them because they'd either be games where you run back and forth between terrible quest givers after killing 2 starving ghosts or just games where you rush to the end only to be locked by dailies.

And yes, it does one thing only but it does that one thing well, it actually feels nice to hit things in this game because they make noises when walking, being hit, hitting, dying and some even make noises while idle. That combined with the great OST, being able to play at my pace and how much I want and the simple controls just hit the spot for me.

Generally with the "not interesting for more than day anymore" also seems to be you just talking to a mirror, exactly what MMOs do you suggest that are new and don't make you do the same thing over and over? I've played Tera for quite a while and liked that, tried getting into FFXIV but found that too be too much of an oddity of action combat and Slooooooooooow combat at the same time.

>> No.17326255

If you just want to kill things over and over play Diablo 2 or Path of Exile. RO is just a dumbed down version of that.

>Generally with the "not interesting for more than day anymore" also seems to be you just talking to a mirror

I've played Diablo 2 and Path of Exile to death, hence why I probably like RO. I more like the endless mobbing I can do in RO.
>Go make a RO private server and invite /jp/sies to play and see how long it lasts.
It won't, nothing MMO related with /jp/sies lasts long. And I don't really like private servers of any kind in most cases.

last ditch effort to defend the Hakurei Shrine by the Hakurei team. They all jump on Koishi who had her ultimate active which gives her +150 to all stats, reduces her range to melee and gives movement speed at the cost of losing direct control of her hero (The AI of what seems to be a catapult takes over, as it usually prioritizes buildings and creeps over heroes).

Tenshi has earthshaker's stun (fissure) which is a long rock wall that stuns enemies and deals some damage. She used it to make sure everyone stayed near the centre of utsuho's ultimate and to try to save Koishi.

The big orange circle is Utsuho's ultimate which is a channeled spell that pulls enemies towards its centre at the same time it deals some damage over time and releases a huge explosion that deals damage based on how long Utsuho channeled it for up to about 7 seconds or so if I recall correctly. She uses it on top of Koishi as she was getting jumped and manages to complete a full duration channel which deals enough damage to kill all five members of the Hakurei team, triggering the "rampage" killing spree message.

Now, you may have noticed that both Utsuho and Tenshi were stunned at the end of Utsuho's ultimate. This is because Yumemi, who is on the opposing team, attempted to use her ultimate which is a big channeled AOE explosion around her that deals damage based on how long she channeled it for and stuns targets hit by it. Her ultimate is different from Utsuho's because Yumemi's does not have a gravitational pull to keep targets inside it and once she starts the channel it can only be stopped by enemy stuns, death or completing the channel.

I hope this helps you understand the webm.

The last time I played an MMO with /jp/ was Haven and Hearth and it gave me PTSD.

I still get the flashbacks from when I saw that Russian in the bear suit walking up from the bottom of the screen. I begged him not to hurt me, but he beat me until I was unconscious, stole anything of value that I had in my little cabin and my little garden that I worked so hard to make, broke all of my things, and I was forced to lay there and watch as it happened. He told me not to move and that if I moved then he would kill me. I was so scared that I laid there long after he had walked away and it seemed like he had left. I finally got up after over 20 minutes of being perilized with fear and then I saw the bear suit sprinting up from the bottom of the screen. He said, "i told u not 2 move u fukck" and he killed me.

It felt like a form of NTR to me and it was traumatic.

Not the person you're replying to but I'll bite. Can't really say I've had as much experience as the rest of you with MMORPGs though. I find that playing the same MMO again and again for me gets stale. I played WoW from 2005-2009 then private server in 2014 and 2016. My private server runs have both been on servers with increased rates. I attempted to play Nost (1x Vanilla) in 2015 or whenever it was and found that I couldn't get past level 6 without getting bored. However if I had been playing Nost in 2014, I probably would have leveled my character all the way to 60 and done dungeons and raids. I quit much faster in 2016 as the game came down to the same elements of just being a grind and being stuck in a rigid meta of which specs are good and which aren't. Thats sort of rambling and besides the point, sorry.

I guess what I mean to say is that it works both ways. I don't want to play old MMOs because I've already done the content so many times while new MMOs I don't want to play because they require me to become invested in a game that may die quickly through either bad updates or a bad playerbase. But if the new MMOs have no content like you say and it's a case of 'clear an updates content in a week then wait 3 months for the next one' then you're right, it's unplayable unless you're a PVPer. Which I'm not. Sorry for rambling.

Apologies for my wording if it sounds harsh. I don't mean it to be and would like to have a friendly conversation about this.

What is there to do in older MMOs that newer MMOs don't have? I have been playing Black Desert since launch and have never had a boring day. If anything, sometimes I have to force myself to log off. There aren't raids or dungeons, but I don't mind. I never really liked that sort of content anyway. It gets boring after the 20th time in a row. I like being able to explore and gather materials. I also like getting into fights over mobs because both the person I'm fighting and I are too stubborn to find a perfectly good spot elsewhere. There are lots of other things to do on the game, too, but those are my personal favorite things. I guess for a lot of older games, I was too young to fully appreciate them, so maybe there's content there and I simply never got good enough to reach it.

I was going somewhere with this but I lost my train of thought.

>What is there to do in older MMOs that newer MMOs don't have?
I'm not him but 10-15+ years of "content" and possibly of character investment. Also nostalgia from the group they gathered back when it started. Furthermore, MMOs are a kind of same-y genre, so there's no real reason to play a modern one over an older one except graphics.

Also in RO's case, it fulfills a niche of cute anime mmorpgs that most other cute mmos fail to acheive. Most just end up WoW clones or are otherwise low-effort trash.

For me, I like Mabinogi a lot. I hear Black Desert is really similar but I can't bring myself to play it because it's not cute. I don't know about its battle system but it's probably one of the more modern pretend-this-is-a-console-game type battle systems over something more orthodox for PCs. Mabinogi though has that virtual life and sandbox aspects old MMOs have because of having a detailed world and not pressuring you to do anything. Modern games pressure you to hit max and grind endgame dungeons and pvp. You don't have to do fucking anything on Mabinogi, so you can just fuck around and have fun. Same thing with RO really and a lot of older games which are intentionally sandboxes or just lack things to do other than level for the sake of leveling.

In regards to this guy >>17374829
>My private server runs have both been on servers with increased rates. I attempted to play Nost (1x Vanilla) ... and found that I couldn't get past level 6 without getting bored. However if I had been playing Nost in 2014, I probably would have leveled my character all the way to 60

I feel like a problem with modern MMOs is you level way too quickly, but also players for some reason are lazy nowadays too and just want to hit max and move to the next game. This prevents things like just grinding with a party or really getting into the game world, assuming it has more than a superficial fantasy world.

I think this is why a lot of old school MMO players can't really enjoy newer MMOs, sometimes not even the MMOs they've been playing for years. What you were looking for never really existed, at least not in the game. You will never be that innocent young kid/teenager playing in a huge world with a bunch of other people for the first time again. You've played too much. You know too much. A game will never fill the void.

I don't know about that. Nostaliga is the only thing that's kept me playing certain MMORPGs for years. MMORPG devs have this stupid idea that they need to casualize the game, or in some way renew it(or else fall into this pit of making trickles of samey shitty content.) These major changes tend to alienate the old fanbase. If only they got it in their head that the changes they needed were to update graphics instead of the gameplay and add gradually more sandboxy stuff.

I booted up everquest for the first time in my life like two years ago.
Unless someone else injected me with their nostalgia somehow, I doubt that's really the case.

Given the time, it's more likely the game changed enough to appeal to you.
