Good question. I have no idea. I do know that not all PFS games are created equally though, and some of them they may enjoy more than others. I would imagine their least favorite FPS are the highly competitive, frantic pace FPS games that require pinpoint precision like Quake 3. I'm sure games like Bioshock and Half Life 2 rate better in Japan.

The majority of FPS are simply bad games. They're also on par with MMORPGs in the challenge aspect, which doesn't appeal to Japanese gamer tastes.

They like their games to have Lunatic difficulty, not the very easy/casual difficulty found in FPS.

Because guns and violence aren't as big a part of their culture as they are in the US. Pretty much the number one comment on Japanese BBSs concerning the genre is "Americans just want to shoot each other." Guns are big in America, but they are not in Japan. Even if you look at other types of games in Japan, there is more emphasis on characters who fight hand-to-hand or with older weapons like swords.

Also because Japanese players prefer more thinking in their games and FPSs tend to be fairly brainless. In an RPG you have to learn how the stats work and develop your character(s) properly, in fighters you have to memorize move lists, in scrolling shooters there is much more emphasis on memorization than in FPSs, and in adventure games you have to make smart decisions and usually try to figure out how to get the paths you want. In an FPS, pretty much all you do is run around pointing at things and clicking them; getting better at the game comes almost entirely from nurturing reflexes, not thinking smarter about things.

Beyond all that, there's the usual aversion to foreign things. Consumers in Japan buy a higher percentage of domestic products than most other countries.

Orly? So you think you could beat me on pro-q3tourney4 if I've memorized all the armor and mega health timings and if I'm able to run the map based on those timings while knowing exactly where you are at all times so I can make prediction rocket shots and snap-rails?

Guess you missed the part about "nurturing reflexes." Getting good at FPSs is about having twitch skills and honing reflexes, not thinking.

Your attitude is part of the problem they have with American-style competition as well. Even in fighting games (rare example of direct competition in Japan), they are generally respectful of their opponents, not "I would rape you every fucking time. DURR HURR HEADSHOT PWNED."

I still disagree. Honing reflexes is a large part of it, but if you don't have total mastery over the engine and the timing aspects of the game mechanics while keeping track of where your enemy is, you'll still lose. In FPS competitive play you must have important timers counting down in the back of your mind while you think a few seconds ahead about where your opponent should be. Trust me, having the best reflex skills in the world still won't help you if you're facing someone able to "run the map" and able to predict where you are all the time. They will shoot off a rail or a rocket even before they see you so it connects a second or two later.

In the end, any game skill is learned. It doesn't matter what genre it is.

>> No.1730350

>>1730316
>>someone able to "run the map" and able to predict where you are all the time.

If we're gonna judge all this by the amount of effort needed to anticipate your opponent's moves (or "being psychic") then they still don't compare to fighting games.

FPS games are a weaksauce genre. This is something I can safely say after years of playing all game genres to their fullest.
