They're usually made after a few weeks or months mostly to give people time to build up works to posts but also because /jp/ isn't that creative and this doesn't need to be a circlejerk hangout in down times. It'll just descend to a cult surrounding an artist like that one guy who drew titty midgets and the anti fans, and/or descend to low quality request making. Once the monstergirl group feels comfortable coming and making requests here all the time, the thread would be as dead as the rest of /jp/.

Also if you look up old proper threads they have a tendency in the past to be half arguing. Being up all the time would only increase that.

Well, I agree with you in principle...but I doubt that you can enforce your will on the whole board without mods doing the enforcing. Even if OP decides to abide by your request someone else with a pen, paper and smartphone will inevitably start creating the threads and the bitching back-and-forth and sporadic sketches will be enough to turn these threads into a permanent general

The best thing to do is to set dates for OC threads to be created and convince enough good artists to participate ONLY in those threads. That would draw people who want good H art or whatever to go to the occasional threads and not the generals. Also requests should NEVER be filled, I don't want these threads to become the cesspool that are the /a/ drawthreads

Arguable. Those touhou roll threads seem like they they get more people drawing while the ones here are usually some small group of artists who commonly post. I can't think of any projects that finished that didn't have their own focused threads. Even the one man games here never finish.

You know, /jp/, I've noticed that a lot of the really good artists, musicians, writers and whatever are pretty broken people. Like they usually have terrible life problems, addictions, tragedies, whatever. Have any of you noticed that?

Will my OC improve if I suffer a terrible tragedy and become a broken person as well?

Bless ya'll for the kind words. It was probably my most "ambitious" and personal project and took about 5 years or so to be realized. I never really promoted it or shared it anywhere until now. It's hard to state just how integral /jp/ was to both my life and the project itself. I think I even called it "the /jp/ album" when I was working on it. So thanks everyone.

Suffering is just a natural, inevitable part of life. Trying to "force" that kind of thing on yourself won't make you a better artist. On the contrary, I think plenty of artists ruined it for themselves by going down the wrong path. Great artists out there will find inspiration in even the most mundane of things. Creation as a transformative act doesn't need tragedy, it just needs dedication and spirit. Suffering doesn't make the artist; it's the artist who makes suffering into something more.

What do you guys do when you get these stagnant periods?

I've found that whenever I hit these sorts of "walls", I could only get over them when I learn more about what I'm doing from other people (i.e. watching lectures, how-to's, etc). The problem lies on finding that "someone" who could teach me what I need to know...

I don't know why, but my slumps/depressive episodes end a lot quicker when I force myself to stop using the Internet.

I'm convinced that I would actually be a happier person if the Internet didn't exist, but I also have absolutely no IRL friends and my sole interaction with strangers is through /jp/ and MMOs. So I usually get incredibly bored or lonely with just my backlog to keep me company and come back to my old shitposting habits.

I've found some of this in myself too. When I have something I enjoy just within arm's reach, I inevitably do that instead of anything of any value. I remember reading someone interview tech skeptic Evgeny Morozov about his writing practices. He said that he bought a laptop that allowed him to easily detach the WiFi card, so he couldn't connect when writing in cafes or libraries.

But if he wanted to disconnect at home, he had to go to more extreme measures. He bought a time-operated safe and when he wanted to write he would take his modem and lock it in the safe. However he had a problem with breaking into the safe by unscrewing a back panel, so he started rounding up all of the screwdrivers in the house and locking them up as well. The hassle of going into town to buy another screwdriver kept him off the Internet.

I've considered doing something like that. Like changing all of my passwords, including the wifi to 30 character monsters and putting those in a safe or just leaving them in my locker at work. Just a thought...

I had multiple projects going on at once so while it was maybe 5 years total, most of that was passively spent learning how to make music and refining it into my own style. It was more like just a vague idea floating around that I wanted to capture one day. In the most "active" phase, I think it took about half a year to put together and by then about half of the tracks were already completed.

I guess the recommendation here is to have a lot of things up in the air so that when you're bored with one thing you can switch to another. It leaves less room for idling.

You don't understand. I don't know what it is about writing work, but if you are a writer, there is nothing more you want to do than procrastinate. Actually making progress on your work is something you must consistently force yourself to do.

It's an observed phenomenon. Studies have been written on it. I remember one such hypothesis that writers believe they are lying to others when they say their work is good and worth reading, and that when they actually sit down and write, the lie is revealed.

What you said doesn't happen only to writers. I can tell you, as someone who has tried/is still trying writing, drawing, programming and music, all of them invite procrastination. I think that, in general, when you're doing something of value, even something you love, work is work and when you work, you want to procrastinate.

Probably. I have a feeling that there's another study out there that proves that the brain reacts to using message boards, MMOs and other communicative technologies in the same way that it reacts to consuming chocolate, coffee or whisky. In other words we're addicts I guess. I mean, I really can't come to any other conclusion about why I keep coming back here, even when I no longer enjoy posting or grinding in ToS.
Of course, I'm not saying that everyone who procrastinates is an addict, I just know that that's how I feel. I used to drink heavily and MMO grinding numbs me the same way that three beers used to.

Well, it's true that emotions can fuel creativity, but they can also kill it when they're too overwhelming and your mind is too occupied. In the end, what really brings out the best in creativity for myself is a state of Zen and relaxation plus a lot of momentary inspiration. It's also very important to get in the practice to realize what you want to draw/compose or whatever else you chose as an artistic medium.

Not really, it would be the same as long as it was lineart. The book is all about learning to observe things for what they are instead of you guessing things.
When you are able to measure angles and distances accurately and being able to "upscale" a drawing or whatever you're ready to move on grayscale photos/rendered drawings, then you move onto real life, which is harder.
I think that color->grayscale and color->color are different skills that you may be insterested in working on along the previous.
That'd sum up observation, I think. but take it with a grain of salt since I'm a beginner too.

Not him but you proportions(size of the body parts in relation to each other) are off. First of all, her arms are too long, the elbows should at least start where the ribs end and arms should at least be able to reach her cunt so she can rub it furiously when needed. Her stomach is also too long, like a centepede. You get the idea. Shorten her a bit. Also, the hands should be big enough to cover the entire face when spread apart.

Take this advice with a grain of salt. Im still below average in skill level. I'm still at the "i can see what's wrong but do't know how to fix it" skill level i mean.
At least you can color better than me.

I never understood the point of making "OCs" without them being tied to a story or something. On the other hand, almost everything I draw(and I should mention I don't post) is part of some story, exceptions being practice stuff.

However I never really make anything of the stories beyond world building and imagining how they play out. Over time I give up on the ideas and accrue dozens of characters. Sometimes I use the designs in other ideas but those ideas never amount to anything either. They almost all have names and backstories. (The strangest thing is the one I'm making the most progress on, I have no idea of the character's personalities or anything beyond their names, designs, and roles.)

In my case, I'm using the OCs I've accumulated over the years and creating a game out of them that I want to share with /jp/ eventually.

I also went ahead and started writing a story since it seemed to be the faster method at the time (not so mention I could use that too as a basis for the game).

In my mind, though, OC is good enough by itself. Art is art, stories are stories. I'm not sure what 'else' you're supposed to do with them other than enjoy them as they are.

I'm still making progress on this story-turned-novel I'm writing, and the comments that I got from an anon came really handy. I found a few bad habits of mine while writing that I never noticed before and I'm trying to minimize them as I go.

This is a nice feature I could add to the game.
Not sleeping well could cause visual changes and possibly gameplay related impairments.
But she is more miserable than actually depressed, so I don't know about constantly giving her such features.
Apart from that, not everyone who is depressed is sleep deprived.
In depressive phases of my life I used to sleep around 12 hours.

Imagine it like a playable detective conan episode.
The special thing I wish to achieve is that things happen around you even if you are doing nothing.
You have to figure out where to be and what to do on your own.

I dislike the detective games that exist myself (although I must admit that I didn't play a lot of them), and I agree that the x to doubt thing is horrible.
As I envisioned it, the doubting will only be inside the players head, and the clues in dialogues would be more akin to small logical inconsistencies.
More often gathering background knowledge and evidence will be more important than the dialogues themselves.
Dialogues just serve as more clues.
Trying to convince others of certain things, for example of who has done the crime, will be the difficult part to figure out, as I don't want to railroad the player into certain conclusions.
I still have to figure out a good system for this.
Apart from that, a lot of scenarios will be a little more action oriented, where convincing others will not be very important.
We will see. For now I have to take care of the technical side, and then produce some models to get the foundation right.
Then I will take care of gameplay details and the writing.

Well apart from the fact that you could potentially save more lives and find out more secrets by knowing what generally happens, I am thinking about multiple story paths.
This will naturally be a lot of work, so I am trying to be careful about it and not make everything depend on it.
What I want to do is though that, depending on success or failure, specific scenarios such as side-quests can happen.
How much influence this will have on the greater whole of the story is still left open.

I'm afraid it's not possible. The game has been changed so much since when we used those assets that it would take too much time and effort. There are also lots of things currently in the game that couldn't be covered by those few placeholders I used for prototyping purposes. I'm sorry.

As for the titles, it's somewhat adhering to genre conventions; with post-rock and stuff like that, the more pretentious you come across, the better, I guess? lol

Also, since the music is decidedly instrumental, the only way I can convey words, and my intentions and thoughts, is through the title. It's sort of like a mini lyric, in a way.

luckily, nearly everything in real life ends up being projected onto a 2d canvas as lines and circles anyway, so it's not a bad start to begin constructing with just those.

If you really need help visualizing this for some reason, go get some playdoh and sticks and make a few pretend molecules (or just look at ball and stick models of molecules online lol) and notice how lighting wraps around what's effectively a circle and how sticks of the same length will foreshorten and appear to change with their orientations.

If I try to draw intentionally shitty, it just looks shitty. If I draw like SD, it just looks like a dumb blob. How do I make something be simple and cute? It's like some weird factor is missing.
