Long story short, I completely forgot that I had registered for the N2 test in July which is due to happen in a mere 13 days. I have all the N2 Shin Kanzen Master books, and have gone through 4 or so chapters of the grammar book with retention via SRS, as well as Tobira. While it may (it probably is) an unrealistic aim, I'm hoping to pass the test. With close to 4500 Core words, Tobira and a slight bit of N2 grammar, what can I do to cram and get up to speed at this point? Given that long-term retention isn't a primary goal for the next 13 days, what can I do with 3-4ish hours a day to maximize my chances of scraping by this test?

It is pretty interesting. But to me, it ended up driving home the point that being a translator is suffering, and that consuming translations means half your experience is a crapshoot based on the style and tendencies of the nearly nameless mook who was available for work at the time.

I had anki-droned and tae-kim'd almost exclusively for 5 years, reading only mind-numbing stuff because the good stuff seemed too hard for "my level". The only thing that broke that cycle was finding an untranslated text I had really wanted to read, and fighting through it with a dictionary and a mining deck.
That opened the floodgates, and suddenly anything was readable given enough time. Anki went from the main event to procedural shit I get out of the way each morning before getting moving on to the books.
The time spent struggling through a single page of a novel and noting down a dozen words for your mining deck feels infinitely more effective and rewarding than the same time period spent doing the same old anki reps.

After finished reading sakubi, I continued to read "Read Real Japanese Fiction" book. The hurdle isn't as hard as I initially thought (I am at the very beginning of the book, and it's mentioned that the reading will be getting tougher as I progressed). So far I'm enjoying it because I can check the translation on the other side of the page and use the audio CD for listening/shadowing practice. I think jumping straight to raw materials as a beginner is suicide.

It's not a matter of how "serious" a work is, it's just a question of how easy it will be to look things up and figure things out. Kino no Tabi is generally quite minimalist with sentence structure and doesn't throw up red herrings or obscure idioms too often, and that's what makes it ideal.
My own personal recommendation to the absolute beginner however has to be anime. If you can get jap subs that can be turned into a transcript, then you get the all the ease of looking up words and instant mining of a VN, plus the same contextual hints that you would get from the pictures of a manga, and you even get some listening practice at the same time.

I'm gonna be honest here. Normally I'm a huge yurifag. One of my favorite things to think about when watching anime is shipping. All my favorites are yuri comedies. NNA was, however, so horrendously bad, that pretty much the only character I even liked at the end was Kyousuke (the white haired guy). He was genuinely the only likable character in the entire fucking thing. Everyone else was a whiny bitch. This was literally just "female middle school bullshit: the comic." I like YURI, I don't like semi-realistic depictions of women being annoying. Fuck, what a waste of time.

But the relationship between MC's little brother and Kyousuke, that was actually intriguing. Crossdressing is an entertaining plot device.

Accurately speaking 僕と相羽 doesn't modify anything, it is what is BEING modified. By modifying 僕と相羽 with 女子達とは少し離れたところで様子を眺める, the sentence is figuratively painting a picture of the current situation.

This kind of sentence is pretty common but it's hard to explain because it's not really directly translateable to english. Basically the whole sentence is just one big noun clause and not a full actual sentence like one would think of in english, because there is no verb acting on the top level noun clause. This has a somewhat different feel than a normal sentence with an actual top level verb, for example 僕と相羽は女子達と少し離れたところで様子を眺める

So I always hear you guys stress in these threads the importance of reading native material while learning Japanese but I'm not quite sure when I'll be ready to actually begin this step.

Yes it is. Just don't get memed into RTK. Learn the words and the Kanji will come with that, simple as it is. There are little to no benefits of understanding the "meaning" of a Kanji presented in RTK as to just learning a word, recognizing a Kanji in another word and extrapolating from there.

Also write the words in a notebook and not just use Anki. It will help tremendously and prevent things like >>17208733

Do you know what つっこむ / 突っ込む means? It's like comment on / retort, ususally as a response to something dumb or weird being said. It's what the straight guy does in a double act comedy duo. That's why the straight guy in japanese is actually called 突っ込み.

Anyway, once you know that, then the rest should be fairly straightforward. It says that the speaker/thinker doesn't know whether he should comment on Amane's line, or comment on 小春達 being silent after Amame's line.

Does anyone have any tips on how to pace yourself when studying the Tae Kim guide? Like a guide on how much to read / study of it each day? I ask because I'm extremely bad at figuring out these things for myself... I've never used one or anything similar myself. But then I learned stroke order and practiced writing when I was starting out with kanji. (I don't anymore, but if I can see the kanji I can usually figure out the stroke order because I know how to write all the most common radicals.)

Note-taking in general is pretty useless IMO. It's better to power through reading it, while testing yourself (mentally) for every section you finished. You can use SRS to make it stickier if you'd like.

Like writing the "important stuff" down on an extra piece of paper, like rewriting the main points of a chapter/section down while also writing down any new vocabulary that was introduced during the chapter/section.
