Guys, don't worry, the pixiv thing is just temporary. According to the announcement, there was a sudden increase in activity that flooded the servers, so no new registration until they upgrade and can handle shit again.

They've already re-opened registration to Japanese, so I don't imagine it will take THAT long.

More like pixiv's system is rather random (i.e. a true tag system) and danbooru's is closely watched by the administrators (more similar to an open category system, only implemented via tags).

The system is not terrible. It searches for the tag, shows related tags and find pictures with the tag or with a tag that includes the writte tag. (search for yousei --> get yousei, daiyousei, himawari yousei, hatena yousei, etc.).

The artists just tag their pictures with whole sentences (that give only 1 search result) or are sometimes too lazy too tag their own drawings.

Yeah, this. It's not the site's fault, it's the lazy-ass artists. I much prefer Danbooru's tag system where you can string together tags by just clicking the + button or exclude ones by hitting -. Makes it a lot easier to find that one image that you can remember what color the hair was but not who the character was or whatever.
