In English, you can't use an object with the passive construction in the same way. Think about it: The apple was eaten. Apple is the subject, not the object.
In Japanese, you can. It's called the 'suffering passive'. There's a section about it in the introduction of the DoBJG (pdf).

What would be the recommended choice between:

You do, but there's zero need to, or to even remember it. For people who aren't trying to learn a second language or write formal essays, grammar is dead information. You learn how to fucking speak everywhere, even before you enter school. You don't even need to know, intellectually, the difference between nouns, verbs and adjectives to speak fluently and develop a high verbal IQ. I did 8 years of french immersion in school without giving half a turkey and I turned out fine. Get the same headaches I did then trying to understand this shit, but I'll get over it.

I also learned French (though it was easier for me to learn it in just one year because my mother tongue is another romance language), and being able to compare the grammar and make sense of patterns (at least giving name to things) helped me a lot while learning.
I dont't see the need to go in depth into the grammar (I don't know my own grammar that well either, I'm no grammarian, but more than the average person, I'd say), but at least to have some basis of comparison and knowing what you're dealing with.

That's just where the idea that english doesn't care about transitivity comes from. In reality most languages have stuff like this going on, and it's only easy to wrap your head around if you boil it down to transitivity vs intransitivity. Hello I 'm planing on taking the JLPT by the begining of december this year. I finished genki 1 and I think I'll be done with Genki 2 by the end of august. so if I focus on the remaining months ( september, october and november) to prepare for JLPT N3 ( Kanji, vocab and grammar that isn't covered in genki) using a JLPT book or tobira ... can I suceed ? or should I just aim for N4 ? I can manage at least one hour and half a day to study japanese and when I'm free up to 4 hours a day.

I got to the point where I'm starting Anki. What exactly are my goals for each card? I realize I should obviously be associating the sounds with the kanji, and the meaning with the sounds and the kanji, but am I also intended to try and parse all of the example sentences as well?

It's up to you.
If you require too much from yourself, reviews will take a long time and you'll be facing a mountain of reviews due to low retention. If you require too little, you'll have low retention due to not actually learning anything.
For kanji cards, I used to require 1-2 onyomi, a kunyomi and a rough meaning. Stopped doing those because they stopped being useful.
For vocab recognition cards, the requirement is getting the pronunciation and general meaning right, the example sentence being an optional hint.
For vocab production cards, the requirement used to be getting a reasonable synonym of the actual answer. Stopped doing those because they did not feel useful.
One thing you should watch out for is developing anki habits where your answer comes from somewhere other than the question itself. For example, learning the cards by the first few words (or the general shape) of the example sentence and answering based on that.

LNs are for teenagers and horny manchildren.
Manga is only slightly above LNs, but far below any actual literature.
All in all, I suggest you stick to video games, porn, etc. because those are the only fields where the Japanese excel in comparison to any other cultures.

I've never seen a Japanese-English parallel text. Threy might exist for a few centuries-old Japanese classics, but don't expect anything more than that.
You can, of course, buy both the raw and the translation, and use the translation as a reference. There are several sites shipping Japanese books overseas, buyfags.moe has a list.
If you're interested in old books (old enough to be public domain), you can save half the money (and the overseas shipping fees) by getting the Japanese version off Aozora Bunko and getting the translation used for a dollar off Abebooks or something like that. Or if the book is old enough, there may be a public domain English translation on Project Gutenberg.

I usually understand what a sentence is about while reading, but when I look up the the English translation I noticed that I often overlook or misinterpret something.

It becomes clear where I fucked up, but I don't really seem to improve that much.

When you add a book in Japanese, it should automatically download the dictionary as well (when you're connected through wi-fi). If not, you can download it yourself for free through amazon.
After that, just highlight a word and the definition will appear.

To be honest, I don't like the built-in dictionary too much. I highlight the word that I don't know in order to see its reading (should I not know the kanji), and then look up on my phone, as my dictionary has an export button to anki.
If that's too much trouble for you, you can "highlight" in the book (again, this is using Kindle), which then saves to a txt file called "Notes", if I'm not mistaken. And then you do whatever you want with it.

That's acceptable, reduce your new cards per day. Your ability to read is contingent on your ability to recall words quickly. It's not just about reading fast, putting together the meaning of a sentence goes a lot better if it doesn't take two minutes of puzzling out what the words are.

That translation is obviously not intended for learners. Even now I can see whole sentences which aren't represented at all, and embellishments which have no obvious origin. I doubt there is very much if anything you can gain from it. Maybe if there is some major exposition going on you can go back to check you got all the major plot points right, but even then it's hard to say if it's worth as much as the extra time you could have spent reading more.

That's true, but it doesn't mean you have to recall isolated words instantly with no context. When it actually comes to reading, your speed is significantly augmented by all sorts of contextual information from general topic to sentence structure.
With this in mind I think of anki as being mainly there just to give the words a home in your head, it's only through reading where they gain speed and usefulness. Answer time is only a concern to the extent that it makes your reps take longer when you could be reading more, so it's not a big deal if the odd card takes you 20 seconds or even a minute.

DoJG has multiple mistranslated example sentences. It sometimes uses the different names or negates something that it isn't making an example out of. This is common knowledge here, someone mentions one at least once a month. That's what he's referring to. Not a big deal.

I'm still grinding through the DuoLingo course for Japanese. If anybody asks, here's how it works:

In terms of teaching you the language structure, it more or less expects you to pick up on everything yourself. You're taught hiragana, and you are given katakana and kanji to pick up over time, but it doesn't do anything to ram the kana into your memory. After that, you're pretty much given nothing but vocabulary and a vague sense of sentence structure, such as where subjects are placed in a sentence and ending sentences with です or ます or otherwise.
I would recommend DuoLingo for beginners, but other than speedrunning through the courses I don't see this getting much use beyond that unless they begin offering courses on structure.

Just wanted to say thanks to anon who wrote sakubi.neocities.org. I've been reading the guide from the beginning today, and now I'm on lesson 35/50. I wished someone had written something like this sooner. Oh, I also enjoyed the injected intermissions in between the lessons - I think it's very informative, and works as mini breaks.

Will more content be added to sakubi? Or is it considered "complete"?
