I've actually come to generally prefer 僕 to 俺 after consuming a metric fuckload of Japanese media. Naturally it varies on a case by case basis but so many "hotblooded protagonists" or "harem protagonists" use 俺 I've begun to associate it with boring or generic characters, whereas 僕 usually indicates a character's going to have a little more depth and be more relaxed which I look forward to.

PSA since people were talking about subtitles in the previous thread.

I never bothered sharing this here since I figured someone else would but it seems it's not known here yet. User kaegi on koohii has created "aligner", a program to automatically retime subtitles based on existing ones. Which has great use for us since there often are subs available on kitsunekko but they aren't timed properly. This fixes all of the problems by letting you download an English release then auto-retiming the JP subs with the EN ones as a base.

If you use this tool to retime subs to an English release, upload them to kitsunekko and state which release you have them timed to! This will save others the (small) effort of even using aligner in the first place.

You can start trying to read as soon as you want, but a good rule of thumb is that as soon as you start feeling like Tae Kim is a chore or hard to remember you should start trying to read, because trying to read will solidify the concepts you've started reading. Of course, you won't /actually be able to read fluidly/ until you've sunk a lot of effort into trying to read, so don't get your hopes up thinking you'll blaze through Majikoi or anything, but it's very important to expose yourself to things.

I know there isn't necessarily a "right" way to learn, but so far I've memorized the Kana, and started reading Tae Kim and JTMW. Occasionally looking something up in the DOBJG if I don't get it. I don't really want to do Heisig or anything similar so I plan to jump straight into reading once I finish the grammar guides. Also as I come across vocab words in the grammar guides I save them in flashcards in Akebi. This is probably not very efficient, but I figured I might as well do it. My question though is should I incorporate anki into my routine some way? Like is it actually a necessity?

Heisig is the worst kanji study resource. It's worse in every single way than every single kanji resources that has come after it. The only reason anyone uses it is because of meme momentum. This is something I always wondered. I've been interested in learning japanese for a long time now and I read some stuff here and there before but it was only recently that I got time to study japanese (university kills you) and the guy is always there giving you advice to use this and that he made, but I've never seen proof that he actually knows japanese.

Whatever, Core is the biggest bore ever.

I finally started learning Kanji but I'm super confused about anki.

I installed it, I downloaded the core 2k/6k deck and then I started my daily practice but... it wants me to memorize 20 new words. Except these words seem to be completely arbitrary and complex, like "ambulance" or "paper money" or whatnot. I will never be able to memorize 20 new arbitrary words + symbols every day.

Am I missing something here? Wouldn't make more sense to start from more everyday words like "me", "you", "sky", "car", "dog", "cat", etc etc? Is the deck randomized and I just got bad luck or what?

I feel like I'm not understanding this Anki deck properly.

Before attempting this routine, I used to just make my own deck with new kanji I stumbled upon when reading random stuff (like manga or random Japanese text). I built up something like 50-60 kanji that I can recognize and I go through every day and I add 5-6 new ones (no more, as I think more than that is too much per day).

That seemed to work well, but I realized that I'm basically just adding specific words I encounter in a specific environment (read: manga) and might not be a good choice. I wanted to go through more common kanji in a similar way as kids and teenager learn in school. I'm sure they don't start with "ambulance" and "paper money", do they?

I just feel like I'm not doing it right, but everyone is recommending this 2k/6k anki deck and I'm confused.

Everyone with experience agrees that mining decks are more efficient than pre-made decks. People only use pre-made decks because they find it easier in the beginning. I don't know why you are referring to mining 'kanji', but you should be mining whole words like the Core cards.

I really just need anki for kanji and not strictly for vocab. I have a very good memory and I usually can retain a word simply by looking it up on the dictionary. What I struggle with is actually remembering the kanji itself.

What does いじり倒す mean? /g/ is being mean to me.
I think it means something like "fooling around/messing around" but I can't find a solid answer that I fully understand.

I think it's 置 which would make 仕置 punishment, but it's missing the "L" shaped part under it, I can't find any Kanji like it, does anyone know if it's 置 or if it's something else?

I have actual ADHD and getting distracted isn't really one of my problems since I'll remember what I'm doing and go back to it.

The real problem is that my short term memory "dumps" constantly. Like, it's not that I can't pay attention, but that I literally forget everything that was just in my head. This is okay when programming because a skilled programmer can remember the behavior of whatever code's in front of them if they've worked in it in the past month, but the same is not true of something like memorizing words.

I'll recognize a card, flip a card, flunk it, go to the next card, get it right, and when the first card comes up again I won't recognize it at all. It's like my brain selectively draws a blank on things it's seen recently, but only sometimes, and only certain things. The problem gets worse the less structured the information is. Arbitrary mappings of shapes to concepts is the hardest. Mappings of strings of syllables to concepts is okay, because the linguistic comprehension system kicks in, but it doesn't do so for kanji vocabulary unless I'm familiar with the particular word or the kanji in it.

I end up with like 100 leeches after a week of using anki and have to suspend them all. A week later I'll unsuspend them and my brain will be completely willing to learn them. It's hard, but it works.

I think the way Anki prioritizes cards in a lapse state (same sorting bin as brand new cards) over cards in a learning state (i.e. gotten one right answer already) when they're both being learned ahead is partially to blame here. That is, when you have no reviews left and all of your cards have a review interval in the future, anki will always show cards in the new/lapse bin first, leading me to a cycle of lapsing two cards, seeing both of them immediately, getting one of them right and one of them wrong, repeatedly, leading to any cards I get wrong too many times in the process to become leeches.

Is there any sort of plug-in for Anki that makes it behave more like Memrise? I like Memrise making you actually type the answer in or picking from multiple choice rather than just showing you the front of a card and having you click to see the back, but Memrise has its own issues with not being able to manually set answer groups and setting up new items being a chore in general.

The Japanese doesn't feel as unnatural as that translation. But the Japanese still feels like a relative clause instead of a normal statement. It's a way of shifting emphasis, just like how many ways there are to word stuff like this in English (similar kind of statement, changing things for brevity):

>What she did was look at me with dead eyes.
>Dead eyes are what she looked at me with.
>She looked at me with eyes like a dead fish.

Now as for why they decided to word it this way, I don't know. But it might have felt appropriate. Relative clauses cause all sorts of possible edge case overlaps that good writers try to avoid subconsciously.

For example, in the English sentence "She looked at me with eyes like a dead fish", either she or the eyes could be like a dead fish. If the writer thought it might feel awkward for someone to start the sentence and see 桜木は死んだ魚のよう[…] they might have subconsciously turned it into a relative clause to make that string of text go away. Who knows?

In any case, it's clearly not unnatural in the Japanese since it's used so often, but that's a matter of what people speaking the language are used to. It's like how I've been saying "the Japanese" this entire time but you probably didn't bat an eye. In another language, constructing generic nouns from adjectives and leaving the "sort" of noun it is as an implication (person, text, language, etc) might be completely unnatural. But it's not unnatural in English.

There's a huge difference between what the syntax literally does, which is still important if you want to acquire the language, and whether or not the normal native speaker is used to interpreting it in certain ways. That's what anon meant when he said that relative clauses are always relative clauses. It's easy to think that a relative clause is going to feel the same in both languages, since it's a familiar concept, but it's important to get used to the same underlying grammar being used for different things.

What's a decent number to aim for on true retention on anki? I mean obviously if possible everyone would want 100% but what's the realistic "anki is doing it's job" number? 90%? I want to create one, but I want to play the games first to make sure they aren't too difficult.

The problem is that games for kids are easy to read, but don't have much text so you barely learn anything.
JRPGs have more text, but it seems their target audience are teens, so the language is often harder and lacks furigana.

I'm still waiting for the following games to arrive.

Dragon Quest IX for DS (has furigana)
Ni no Kuni for DS (has furigana)
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney (scripts available online)

I've been playing ASTLIBRA ( https://freegame-mugen.jp/action/game_4223.html ) because someone accidentally recommended it to me, and I basically understand it. I don't know how many words I know, but I can't read good VNs without a dictionary but here I only miss basically one or two words every three textboxes.
