In season 1?

Yes. She was cute and I was interested in seeing where her character would go.

In Kai?

No. The transition to a dark character made her pretty unlikable. (and I really couldn't give less of a shit that it was justified within the story; it doesn't make her any more likable, and it doesn't mean that her character had to travel in that particular direction or that it couldn't have been handled better) It probably doesn't help that Kai's atmosphere didn't even come close to measuring up to season 1's thanks to focusing around Rika's development, fatalism, and THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP instead of superior atmosphere building and dark and gritty drama.

See, this is a roadblock associated with writing a story that's too epic or has too good of an atmosphere.

Depending on the nature of the story, it can be difficult to keep the atmosphere that made the story great while you're wrapping things up. Lots of stories fall victim to "awesome first 75%, shit/mediocre climax". (Code Geass, Indigo Prophecy, Higurashi, etc.)

Higurashi's writers should have aimed to keep the dark and gritty tone while providing answers and maybe focused more on Rika's search for answers (keeping with the mystery and active pursuit aspects) and acting (in ways more befitting to Higurashi; they're up against trained commandos, so it would make sense for them to get violent) than her moping around about her terrible fate, RESOLVE, and THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP.

Also, I started to find Rika adorable right around the Akasaka arc, and I liked her up until the second arc of Kai where they started to show more of what she was like behind the mask.

And I think the whole power of friendship thing is exaggerated. They try to rely on friendship in Minagoroshi and they're all gunned down by Takano one by one. In Matsuribayashi-hen they get the police as well as Irie and Tomitake on their side. If the Banken hadn't arrived, then Okonogi would have just killed them all anyway, so saying that the power of friendship solved everything is very much an exaggeration.

Akasaka is a wild card who will not always show up in the deck. And on the occasions he does, it doesn't mean he'll be useful all the time. It was only because of one Bad End Akasaka who trained himself to eat Jackie Chan's heart that another Akasaka managed to channel his abilities.

See, this is one thing that I dislike about Kai Rika.

In season 1, I thought that she was someone that was knowledgeable and relatively competent but just happened to have rules binding her or have too much shit going on in the background for her to handle when in actuality she was just half-assing things. The world has near infinite possibilities and resources for those who look for them (they might be somewhat limited for a little kid, but she still had access to a large amount), but she just stuck to simple things like "run away" and "ambush them by myself". She can look all over the place for ways to protect herself. Even for an adult stuck in a child's body, the world isn't a restrictive box that only allows for a dozen or so responses to any given situation. She has possibilities that she can obtain with some real unconventional effort, she just never explores them.

You're forgetting that the only time we see Rika's POV, she has already reached the end of her rope, and does it half-assed now since, hey, I tried this thing for a hundred years! So you can't say that she didn't pull her resources because she likely did, it's just that you can't seem to acknowledge that a little girl still has limited resources, resets or no.


P.S. She doesn't remember everything that happens in her previous lives. Sometimes she remembers and sometimes she doesn't, it's all random.

I suppose that this is guesswork, but I wasn't getting the impression that she had tried everything before, and they certainly never showed her taking drastic measures that would have required a lot of effort and planning on her part.
