Does anyone else have the problem where if you hear a Jap say a word you don't recognise at first it's fucking impossible to make out what syllables they're actually saying so you can look it up? I have to rewind over and over again when I'm watching anime to try and decipher what sounds a Jap's saying and a lot of the time I just end up giving up because I can't make it out at all

I think I got the light scripts figured out, but they seem to use some kind of nonstandard encoding sometimes. Do you happen to know if anyone has a mapping for that?

A particular example is a point in kaijiri.txt where it goes
>言語として認識できない別世界からの妖言は、しかしなぜか、そこに込められた想いだけは感じ取れた。
before and after that, there's dialogue with non-unicode text in it. An example is (right above that text):
>E3 80 8C 06 14 06 07 06 26 06 14 06 1F 06 2A 20 06 07 06 20 06 1A 06 39 06 2A 06 26 06 28 06 23 06 03 06 12 06 08 06 0C 06 02 06 06 06 27 E3 80 8D
which starts and ends in dialogue quotes but contains data that isn't normal utf-8 text of any kind. The 06 come before every single character that's coded in some some other kind of encoding, and each such character is packed the same way as utf-8 but doesn't correspond to a sensible character from unicode. If I just throw away the 06s I get control code stew.

Unfortunately, every game is bad for learning Japanese more or less, aside from RPGs and whatnot which may as well be VNs in between battles. There's a lot of idealism I see about learning Japanese through games but it almost always ends up with learning a tiny bubble of relevant Japanese and then just playing the game instead of learning. The only games that are really good to learn from are RPGs but like I said, those may as well be VNs given all the dialogue they have.

They are different from Indo-European passive verbs in that they can be used with a direct object (をば), or basically in that they are a little less grammatical and a little more context-driven, if that makes sense. This is just the way that japanese expresses passives with prepositional objects, like "I was sat next to". When they go to type "could of" (which I never said wasn't wrong, I should add), they're typing that because writing things the way you pronounce them is natural. Not because they think the word there is "of".

Even if a kid who's still learning to read and hasn't learned about contractions yet interprets it as the same "of", there is no part of their mind that considers it to have the same lexical function. So when it comes to kanji...
Do all meanings correspond to a respective reading, like in a mathematical function whereas every input has one output (example below of the image I made), or is it that all readings in general can have all possible meanings it just depends on the context (example above of the image)? In other words, does a particular reading bond to a particular meaning, or can all possible readings have all possible meanings, just depending on context?

音読み are basically synonymous with each other. Whether 呉音 or 漢音 or some other is used is a matter of origin or at times arbitrary convention. It is probably possible to notice a very general trend of 呉音 readings being in one way or another of Buddhist origin, but not necessarily, or already far removed from their Buddhist implications (e.g. 人間).

訓読み are best viewed as Japanese words in their own right, written with various Chinese characters because they sort of matched, but the semantic match is not necessarily exact (to the actual Chinese characters).

Chinese-originating compounds with 音 readings are often two synonyms put together, or an abbreviation of two other compounds, which may sound nonsensical upon analysis. From the Japanese perspective, uncommon senses of kanji are often used.

Japanese-made ones are usually quite straightforward, so they are easily spotted, but older 訓読み compounds can be highly metaphorical.

But there are some contexts where only one or the other would be possible, because they don't mean exactly the same thing. For example, 目に涙が溢れる can only be read as あふれる. 穴から粉が溢れる can only be read as こぼれる. 水が溢れる could be either one (but I would guess あふれる first because it's more common).

these people do have the time but they'd rather lounge on the couch sending snapchats and munching on cheezits after they get home from work, rather than working out. the point is don't make excuses.

it is extremely unlikely any given person can't fit 2 hours of studying into their daily routine. unless you're working a 15 hour shift.

A little update: the highlight buttons now highlight the entire test description area of a single entry. The trade off: individual genre tags are not highlighted. Entries also now have a clear selection button.
Added a simple button which allows anons to scroll back to top with a single press, for navigation ease. It may not be useful at the moment but I figure once the rest of the CoR contents are added, it will end up rather long in the tooth and make scrolling to the top manually a pain.

Focusing on the rest of the CoR series at the moment. Looking to do it in stages so if for whatever reason you find yourself using browsing the site and there are a large amount of entries with missing data, images, etc. they will be in the process of being added and it isn't an error.
Doing it that way to get an idea of how much room it all takes up, etc. It will look a little messy till all of the data is up to date.

So far as I can tell, they're all full-width text, and it's my guess that some Japanese programs may not play nice with half-width texts as Japanese fonts generally do not use it(unless you want unreadable garbled bullshit for complex kanji). There's probably other reasons related to unicode or some shit like that. Or maybe it's just too much of a pain to switch to half-width manually as in with IME, so they say fuck it and do it the easy way.

It's not exactly a bad idea. You won't get as high of the results you'd get if you followed the DJT guide in entirety, but it's still a very good learning course for beginners. If you don't have much time to study everyday, then Duolingo is going to be pretty useful. So I say go for it.

I have a reason i want to do this that would take more explanation than its worth.

I'm still just starting out with Japanese learning. Should I nevertheless set the Anki new cards order to random?

Also, I use Anki for stuff besides Japanese, too. Should I just create one megadeck out of all my cards? I really don't like how Anki prioritizes decks alphabetically. I want new cards to be random, too, not just the reviews, which become semi-random after a while.

You'd get your Japanese cards mixed with your other decks, so essentially you'd be doing multiple subjects at the same time. Personally, I'd hate that. Go for it if you want to, you can always separate decks later pretty easily.

DJT, I need your collaboration!

I have made a deck that complements Core10k by adding all the 262 missing Jouyou Kanji. It consists of a manually picked set of 505 words where I tried to balance between word frequency and a wide coverage of readings (mostly 表内, unless a 表外 one seemed relevant).

Some of these words go pretty low on frequency, reaching 50.000 when the kanji is rare.
Because of that, finding sample sentences was hard. I had to use a lot of JP-JP ones and translate them on my own, using my Dekinai skills and some Google-Translate-fu. Besides, I'm ESL.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_Al3FgNZSCVB0SXvkU9MHy8yErocdwcidNKr6QzPt0M/edit?usp=sharing

Could you guys give it a read and point out any important corrections to be made?
Just right click a cell and add a comment with any corrections you may have.
Focus on the message rather than on form - as long as it illustrates the word correctly, it should be fine.

Red = Manually translated.
Blue = Machine translated.

After it's done, I'll make a deck and a zip with the audio files for the CoR.

What do you guys do to learn how to memorize vocabulary? Anki/SRS in general is, imo, only good for remembering the pronunciation. I've personally gotten to a point where I can speak the language, but only recognize 2/5ths of the 800 or so words that I know.

And I've NEVER written anything down... I've never practiced writing kanji in general... Because it's such a tedious task. It's the one thing out of everything else that makes me want to not learn Japanese anymore, but it's probably the best method to actually remember how kanji/vocab looks.

I swear... if everything just had furigana over it, there'd be no need for this...

Would anyone be interested in an ancillary Japanese thread for intermediate or higher? Like N2+ maybe. Would be a far slower thread obviously, primarily focused on recommending content, and with submitted questions being more geared towards more esoteric stuff like dialects, classical Japanese, etc. Stuff that can't easily be found by reading a grammar guide or looking on chiebukuro. Seriously not trying to be elitist at all or anything but I would be interested in such a thing, at least. The w is still pronounced by a huge portion of the Japanese population, at least half, it's just really really subtle, but it certainly does not have the same sound as お

Anyone is having this problem when you're reading and you recognize the word yet the kanji are a jumble mess in your head and it's just impossible to reproduce them from memory? I know a bunhc of vocabulary but I've been struggling with this. Do you have any tips?

Yeah I think I can count the number of kanji I can actually write on my hand. I don't think it's a problem really. I only read and write on a computer, you don't need to produce anything then, the computer does it for you.

I think I accidentally fucked up my Core 2k/6k deck by putting it in a parent deck with random order.

I get kanji like ボーイフレンド among my first 20 cards. You are supposed to start off with cards meaning "one" and "two", right?

Will my deck be fixed again, if I sort by creation date once and then use the reposition tool with default settings?
Or does the creation date not correspond to the order the deck is supposed to be in and I'll have to reup- and redownload that huge deck to start it from scratch? ;_;

Hey guys, I have a question about this sentence.

にびょういないにまどからすててるな

Basically I read this like:

にびょういない - in less than 2 minutes
に - in the direction of
まどから - (the) window?
すててるな - it will be thrown

More precisely, throwing something out of the window. However my confusion is with まどから reading about から I'm slightly confused about what から is meaning here.

https://nihongoichiban.com/2011/03/27/particle-%E3%81%8B%E3%82%89-kara/

Says that から can be a geographical context saying from this point onward. So is から what is actually what makes this throwing out of the window instead of throwing towards the window?

I set that back already, but the "Due" dates all seem so random.

I also noticed that when I went through the Kangxi radicals deck, the first few shown were radicals like the one meaning "three-legged cauldron" (radical #206) and the one meaning "one" showed up late. The random order was turned off already.
That doesn't sound right, which is why I think I somehow permanently fucked it up.

Is anyone here familiar with latex and can help me out in customization? I just found the word frequency plugin and i want to add it to the front and back of my deck.
