Would anyone have some more similar to this? This is really eerie and reminds me of some Yume Nikki background music, or some game that was distributed at a single comiket before the developer killed himself in unusual circumstances. Other synth music is welcome too, I like techno,.

Uchoten is one of my favorite japanese bands!
The keyword for bands similar or related to Uchoten is Nagomu Records. That was the label owned by Kera (vocalist of Uchoten), and bands under that label (usually very quirky, out of the norm new wave, although there really wasn't any defined sound to nagomu. Bands like Tama (avant garde folk) or kinniku shoujo-tai (metal) started on Nagomu. Also the techno gods Denki Groove, were once a nagomu bands, known as Zin-Say! (or Jinsei).
You should check out those bands for sure. They are not really like Uchoten sound-wise though, I think Uchoten had a unique kind of synth-punk sound that was copied (or influenced by) later by bands like Metronome, sometimes Zin-Say can sound similar to Uchoten, same as early Kinniku Shoujo-tai (they used to be a lot weirder during the nagomu days, also Fumihiko wasn't in the band yet, and they had less of a metal sound and more of a weird jazzy punk sound, which kind of remained in the band later, but in Nagomu days it was a lot more capitalized. Tama is completely folk music, nothing like Uchoten, but you should listen to them still. They all share that weird vibe. It's like taking a trip to Japan's most bizarre corner of the music world in the 80s.
Zin-Say's Substance III (There is no Substance I or II, the only other one is Substance V, they're both compilations or most of their records).

There are other less known nagomu bands that are worth checking out, Klara Circus for example, a 3 girl unit, piano, violin and voice.

I'll rip and upload the Nagomu collection today, will post later.
I also have both No Lie-sense albums (which I downloaded online, I think one of them is still in alljpop, not sure).
I also have the "lost and found" Uchoten EP that was released in 2015.
And tell me if you'd like the Nagomu V.A. CD (it doesn't have any Uchoten/Kera track, but it has a lot of good stuff).
I also have Tama's nagomu collection CD if you're interested in them.

My favorite tracks on this CD, other than Tama's, are tracks 2 (Erotica, great band, but I wasn't able to find anything else by them, I know there's more though), 7 (Klara Circus), 10 (Minca panopica, I love this track in particular by them) and 11 (Ita-roh, great band that I found thanks to this CD).
Also, track 6 was actually composed by Takkyu Ishino from Zin-Say, and it was recorded on a live Nagomu event, the chorus was done by the public.
Track 9 (Model Plants) has Kera as guest chorus.

Here's some music that I've scanned previously:

Long Vacation 20th Anniversary Collection 1. A shibuya-kei cover band that also did their own songs consisting of Kera of Uchoten, Teruo Nakano of P-Model and Minosuke, early drummer of Kinniku Shoujo Tai.
https://mega.nz/#F!X5E3WZTC!CGcl1b3DO3DAKqz616SgYA

Teruo Nakano 1996 - 2016. A re-release of his first solo album User Unknown released on Syun after Long Vacation disbanded. It also contains other songs from his other solo albums. This one is on the Beat Surfers record label owned by Shunichi Muira
https://mega.nz/#F!PgsEwACZ!VA2r6t3Xo68x_RrEsyMOpw

Freedom by COTO. Shunichi Muira of P-Model and Uchoten with Pevo1go of PEVO (A P-Model and Devo tribute band). This is their first album and it was only released a few months ago.

In -胤- by 4-D Mode1. Kenji Konishi's band, former member of P-Model

Silence be Alive by Hikashu. I actually bought this one when I went to see Hikashu play live, I got all the members to sign it too. I asked Koichi Makigami about the Christmas event with Kera and Susumu Hirasawa, but he told me it got recorded and I should just look in the place I'm meant to look or something like that, I didn't really understand what he meant. And I'm definitely grabbing this too. I have it on mp3 but not in 320.
This album is great by the way, decidedly the most "pop" Kera has ever been but that's not a bad thing at all, and I like how each track is very different from each other, lots of variety of genres and sound, makes the album a great listen from start to finish.

Actually I need to get into Long Vacations, back when I was more into tracking down everything Kera-related I could, Long Vacations was kind of rare, I couldn't find anything by them, although I knew about the band, so I kind of missed them, but yeah they did some nice synthpop, loved the songs on the Kera solo hour, he also did some covers of Long Vacations on No Lie-Sense.
Still I think 原色 is like a more eclectic album, as I said, the variety it has, you go from a big band/broadway-like song, to a bossa nova, to a folk song, a ballad, and so on, all within a very pop production, Kera's quirks are quite tame on this disc, but that's not necessarily bad for the kind of thing he was going for.
As for Uchoten albums, yeah it's hard to pick a favorite, my favorite is GAN because Kimi wa GAN na no da has always been my favorite song by them, it wasn't the first song I listened by them, but one of the first, and what's more, it was the live version from the Uchoten wo korose video, which is more upbeat and crazier, with some extra synth arrangements. I don't know what it is about that song that captivated me so much. The rest of the GAN album has the same kind of sound too, with that "water drop" synth present in pretty much every song of the album, and the punk-rock approach in the compositions. Thinking it that way, it may not be a good introductory album for the band, since it's not really that variated, but it's definitely still a bonafide Uchoten album.
Aissle is a great album as well. Peace and Aissle were the first 2 Uchoten albums I heard in their entirety, and not as loose songs/videos, so they have a special place for me as well. But I like the entire discography, really. I loved "lost and found" to bits too, great EP. I still haven't been able to listen to Kafka's Rock / Nietzsche's Pop though, but I'm planning to buy it sometime when I'm not so tight on the budget.

Well, I have all of their 20th anniversary collection, so I can get started on uploading the rest for you.
Yeah I understand what you're talking about, its interesting in seeing him do some other things as well.

Sleepers was the first song I heard and ever since then I was hooked. I was having such a hard time trying to find albums (I didn't know of all the best places to look for at the time), so I just used a proxy service for a yahoo auction which was selling a bunch of his albums. Yeah, I really enjoyed lost and found as well as Kafka's Rock/Nietzsche's Pop, I'm not so sure about lost and found, but Kafka's rock came out day one on spotify, so that's where I've always been listening to it on.

>> No.17326407

Oh shit! I ignored Spotify all this time, didn't think a band like Uchoten would be featured there. I just searched and found the album... you're telling me I could have listened to it day 1 for free? I feel like a dumbass now. Well, thanks for that anon, I know what I'll be listening to this morning.
And thanks, your rips will be very welcome. I also remember buying some stuff from Y!A, like GAN, back when I got into them (2007), it was fairly hard to find anything by them online (mp3s I mean), although japanese users uploaded a bunch of videos to youtube, so that's how I got to listen to their stuff first, I remember finding Peace and Aissle for download on some torrent, or maybe it was emule. Eventually I got most of their disco (as well as most of Tama's, and others) on kyo music city, that forum was golden, I don't think it exists anymore.
By the way, have you listened to NESS? It's a band with Uchida from Kinniku shoujo tai and Miura from P-model, I have both their albums if you're interested.

Don't knock spotify, you would be surprised with just what might be on it. Its pretty good for newer things especially, unfortunately some of it is also region blocked. If you haven't listened to it already, broken flower, body and song, brown white & black, and Japan's Period are on spotify too. I've only been really interested in music for just over a year now, so I'm relatively new to the whole thing.

Yeah, I would like NESS, I was thinking of buying some of their albums some time actually, I'm pretty sure they have a third album out now too.

I have this album too, which you might be interested in, but I'm not so sure. Its a captain records vocaloid cover album, but it also covers nagomu related bands like Zin-Say!, Min & Klina Men, and Uchoten's Kimi wa gan na no da. Actually, even Kera himself used Hatsune Miku in tracks 10 & 12 of Kafka's Rock/Nietzsche's Pop.

Yeah I'm going to check out those on Spotify. One thing though, in the middle of my listen of Kafka/Nietzsche, Spotify interrupted me with a reggaeton ad, that was kind of horrible, but I get that it's free and it has ads.... but still, they could do it in a different way instead of interrupting one's listen. At least it didn't do it in the middle of a song.
I loved the album by the way, Uchoten still sound fresh, I adore these guys.
As for Hatsune Miku, I'm not a fan, but I don't hate it either, so I'm definitely checking that album out! The world will never have enough versions of Kimi wa GAN na no da. I'll let you know what I think of it after listening. Thanks!
Here's the NESS albums, I have no idea if they released more, I'm slowly crawling back, tracking down a lot of artists that I haven't listened in a while, I miss being a teenager and spending the whole day on the internet, trading stuff in soulseek or winMX, those were the days.

NESS also has Hiromu Toda from Shinjuku GEWALT/FLOPPY, are you into them?
There's a lot of 90s/2000s bands that were influenced by nagomu/uchoten, I consider these bands "neo nagomu", although they were often labeled visual kei/angura.
One of my favorite artists is Eiji Matsuoka who had a lot of different bands and projects, and actually it's thanks to him that I got into Uchoten and Nagomu, he mentions Uchoten in the lyrics of one of his songs, and well, when you look at his usual yellow outfits, it's clear he's a Uchoten fanboy (same with Sharaku from Metronome/FLOPPY).

since we're talking about nagomu records in this thread, and I'm a big fan of kinniku shoujo tai, I was wondering if anyone knew bands along the style of tokusatsu (which I found from kinniku shoujo tai)? if I search bands like tokusatsu I get stuff like urbangarde, which I also enjoy. I'm a pretty big vocaloid fan, but I always have trouble finding albums that I'm really into. I remember reading once that my favourite vocaloid musician's favourite band used to be the Nagomu band, Mishin. He created a band with Karia Nomoto, called Esu-Efu and he did a performance one with 005Harry who is known as the engineer for Susumu Hirasawa, he made the camera robot for his recent live performance, and is also an ex PEVO member. I have their mini album called Sing Future.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv-_7wlTIE8

Thanks for the NESS, I'm going to give them a listen now. Is it alright if I share it with some other people I know that are really into Hirasawa and P-Model, I'm pretty sure they would like it. I know Kera is an absolutely huge fan of Hirasawa, do you like his work too?

I've listened to those kinds of bands such as Polysics, Floppy, Galapagoss and Pinokiyo/Pinokiwo, I've always felt like they shared a similar style, but I've never known what to describe it as. I like them, but in a way I also feel as if they're no Uchoten or P-Model.

When you start digging into the rabbit hole, you find out all these musicians and artists are connected, in some way or another, it's really fascinating.
I didn't know that Kera was a huge fan of Hirasawa, but I knew they worked together. In fact, in the Kera Music Hour, there's Hirasawa as a guest musician right?
I remember watching a video of Hirasawa's Haldyn Hotel (one of my favorite songs by him) and there was Kera performing with him, doing chorus or something, really cool.
And yeah I like Hirasawa and P-Model and his other projects like Shun and Mandrake. I know a guy who is probably the biggest Hirasawa fan in the west and has a ton of rare Hirasawa stuff.
And yeah you can share NESS, I don't even remember where I got it, not my own rips. You can also share any of the other stuff I've shared, I don't mind, in fact , keep the nagomu love spreading!

As for "neo nagomu", yeah they are no Uchoten of course, but I like that you can notice they have a similar vibe, especially bands like Metronome and stuff by Eiji Matsuoka, they are pretty much nagomu bands before anything else. In fact they're straight Uchoten fanboys since they both use the typical Uchoten yellow/black outfits, Metronome even use the "X" simbol Uchoten uses (which can also be interpreted as "me" for metronome).
And LOL Pinokiwo, I love that guy. His music is kind of bad, but I love his whole Sega fanboy persona and the crazy lyrics, especially in that song "Sega no game wa sekai ichi".
I actually had no idea about Esuefu, and Mishin rings a bell but I'm not sure if I've ever listened to them, will give it a listen for sure.

Well, I assume so at least. He toured with P-Model just before their first breakup and I'm pretty sure that Long Vacation did a concert with him too (not sure if that ever got released). He also named a few plays after his songs, like Frozen Beach. Yeah, he covers Ohayo and sings with Hirasawa, I'm pretty sure there's another song which he guest stars in too. There was the Hikashu Christmas event with them together too. I would have thought that Coyote would be your favourite, seeing as how Kera actually sung in that song. Yeah, you definitely know your stuff then.

>I know a guy who is probably the biggest Hirasawa fan in the west
Its funny you mention that, I might know someone like that too, he's the person that has basically wrote all of his wikipedia pages, he knows pretty much everything. I don't think he's listened to much Kera or Nagomu stuff though, which is a shame.

I'll have to give Metronome a listen to then when I can.

You know I've always wondered why Zin the drummer would never talk, even in that colourful merry video where he had to lip sync a part, he looked extremely uncomfortable.

I don't blame you, I'm pretty sure they're pretty much unofficially broken up anyway and it was just a one time thing.

Now I think we might be talking about the same person... although I'm not sure if he's the one who wrote the wiki articles. But if it's the same guy, he's really cool.
By the way at this point I think it'd just be better we keep in contact, I mean, it's not everyday I get to talk to someone who is into Nagomu. If you want to keep in touch myuraou at gmail
As for Zin, yeah he just seems to be a weird guy, who knows if that's just how he is, or if he's pulling a character, he's probably just weird, wouldn't expect any less from a nagomu boy. I'd actually like to read interviews of Uchoten and such, I don't really know a lot about the members other than Kera. Kuboburyu seems like a fun guy.

About hirasawa, In a model room is definitely one of his best works too, I also loved Vistoron and the Kaku P-Model revival. Obey me, I Am TV was a great song. But I need to listen to his latest stuff.

Sadly I lost contact with him, but his site is prideofmind.com, and he's a big fan of Malice Mizer also, if it's the same person that should be enough to know, hehe.

Yeah 662bpm was the first, or one of the first work of them as Denki Groove, Vitamin is when they started moving toward a more pure techno sound, I still like it though, Stingray is a fantastic track I think.
I'll post some more Denki Groove, they've got a lot of good stuff. By the way one of their singles from 2008, Shounen Young, has lyrics by Kenji Ohtsuki, and mentions Nagomu.
Also, some years ago, Kera did a super big Nagomu event, and Zin-Say performed there. I remember there was a video on youtube, it was amazing seeing Denki Groove perform songs from Zin-Say again, sadly, that video was taken down by Sony...

I know you're asking WHERE, but you need to know what to look for before you have a way to do it.

There's specific genres I found that contain a large amount of Japanese artists.

One would be math rock - usually clean guitar mixed with distorted, lots of complicated polyrhythms and weird time signatures, sort of start-stop. It's usually instrumental.

A few good examples of Japanese math rock bands:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn4_K7d2w4Y
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25GZSIUdHBc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m16e5pIGpEQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rR4kvH0r_4 (vocals)

Here's a few extra artists from when I was big into post-rock.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aTzpIyugkU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw1I-62cTLw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92xjD7j1B5Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fOv_x4t-2s

You could really go anywhere from here...
solo piano? Akira Kosemura or Ironomi
solo vibraphone? Masayoshi Fujita

angry man with guitar yelling at things? Kazuki Tomokawa
do you like 70s prog? Koenjihyakkei
power metal? Galneryus are great

in terms of heavier stuff, there'd be OGRE YOU ASSHOLE, Envy, Heaven in Her Arms, MAXIMUM THE HORMONE, and Gojira.

Hope that gets you started on exploration!

I only really got into Japanese music through three fronts: digging through instrumental music radio back when last.fm had it free, finding related artists to things I already enjoyed (that happened to be based in Japan) and touhou doujin works.

Perhaps someone else can cover bases I didn't, like more vocal-based things.

Yeah, Kaku P-Model is pretty good too, I especially liked Gipnoza. I remember trying to search for those 2 albums for ages until I finally stumbled upon it.

Pride of Mind doesn't ring any bells, so I don't think its the same person then, but I can always ask.

I don't know, I feel as if when they didn't know how to play any instruments, so they just dressed up and did silly things was part of the charm of Zin-Say, now that they're actually trying to make music, it just doesn't feel right.

>I don't know, I feel as if when they didn't know how to play any instruments, so they just dressed up and did silly things was part of the charm of Zin-Say, now that they're actually trying to make music, it just doesn't feel right.
Well, I think Pierre Taki doesn't even classify himself as a musician, although I think some songs are credited as being composed by him (obviously with Takkyu's help), and he is a lyricist, and sings, so he is a musician, but he considers himself a performer, or a "Hype man". I remember reading that Pierre was actually a Zin-Say fan at first, and one day just jumped into the stage and started doing silly dances, probably wearing his Doraemon costume, and then he became an official member right after. Obaba and Gurison Kimu actually composed some songs on Zin-Say, but it was mainly all Takkyu, all programmed in sequencers, 303 and 808s. Takkyu started doing covers of Depeche Mode and New Order ("Blue Monday" was the song that made him decide to make his own music) so he had an idea of how to make electronic music, on top of also having heard lots of YMO and Kraftwerk, but he decided to go for a more "nagomu" direction with Zin-Say, which was great, because it mixed techno pop and the usual nagomu eccentricities.
According to the booklet on Substance V, at first Zin-Say was a solo Takkyu unit and it was a noise act (would kill to hear any recording of that!), he eventually started recruiting more members until it was a troupe of weirdos, must have been nice to be there at the time and see Zin-Say evolve slowly into Denki Groove. The early DG days were pretty much Zin-Say without the make up and with more rap. Takkyu eventually started getting more and more into house/techno music production (especially german techno) and the sound changed a lot, but they still retain Zin-Say elements to this very day. Pierre still dresses in silly outfits and dances around the stage, and a lot of songs retain that wacky sense of humor. They still played some Zin-Say songs during the early DG days, like "Ore wa karada no kinniku wa...".
It's kind of amazing that the japanese techno god was once in a Nagomu band, he might be the most successful guy out of all the Nagomu bunch. Denki Groove and Takkyu were even popular in Europe, within the electronic music scene during the 90s. Takkyu performed in Love Parade several times.
Have you listened to Flash Papa? That's another early DG album I think you might enjoy. I can upload it if you don't have it.
As for the Kera event, it was this:
http://natalie.mu/music/news/98466
Kera's 50th bday and Nagomu's 30th anniversary. It was similar to the Kera Solo Hour, but with more guests. On the 2nd day there was "Denki Groove plays Zin-Say".
And no, sadly I didn't rip the video before it was taken down, I regret immensely. Hearing new takes on old classics was great. And the crowd was really excited too (it wasn't a big live house)
