I finally finished my 1CC on LoLK by choosing to abuse Reisen's bomb after practicing on Reimu for about four days straight. The good thing is I cleared it in two tries but abusing her bomb sure as hell left a bad taste in my mouth that I'd probably 1CC it again using Reimu and this game made me hate clowns now.

New to STGs here, just 1CC'd MoF on Easy, might try it on Normal soon but I want to know one thing:

What the fuck was Kanako's last spellcard? It ate all my lives and all my power, how is capturing it humanly possible? Safespot?

You can unlock stages for a shottype by watching a replay through to the end. You might wanna practice Aya onwards before trying that.

I am in the middle of something else right now but I remember that Sanae's nonspells are mostly those diagonal curtains. You deal with those by figuring out when their different velocities make passable gaps in the curtain, least on normal.

Oh, that makes sense then. Sadly I haven't had much progress on either card lately, I've really hit a wall, haven't reached her survival card once.

Has anyone here had issues with graphical glitches in Ten Desires? It's very, very minor, but sometimes specific bullets that spawn at the same time will be "cut," like part of the bullet will be further to the left than the rest. It only seems to happen during specific parts of the stage, but it's annoying. I'm not sure if it has to do with my FPS rate (for some reason it always displays as "60.1 FPS") or not.

And to speak about the new game, I'm not too fond of the idea of Cirno being playable. I like Cirno and love GFW even if it's probably Stockholm Syndrome and think a GFW2 would be great, but she really seems too weak to handle an actual incident, unless her Alolan forme gives her a big (but temporary) power upgrade. Aya just seems kind of boring as a pick, and I'm not a fan of Shoot the Bullet so I really hope her "cancel bullets by snapping pictures" isn't a major part of her character. It honestly seems like having either StB Aya or GFW Cirno as the basis for either character's shottypes would break the game, since the difficulty of StB, DS, and GFW are built around those shottypes specifically and not around normal Touhou gameplay.

I really like Marisa-A in SA. It's interesting how they reversed the focus/unfocus dynamic and her bomb spam potential is great for someone like me who really sucks at dodging. She's definitely risky to use because of how you can overbomb and lose so much power that you have to dodge more bullets due to not killing enemies, forcing you to continue to bomb to avoid death and losing any power you just gained back, spiraling until you get a game over, but she feels good to me despite being unorthodox.

My least favorite shottype has to be DDC Sakuya-B. Everything about her is terrible except the fact that she has great scoring potential, and I don't play for score.

I'm also allergic to bombing, actually. It took a lot of work to make myself bomb. MoF, SA, and GFW are the only games I don't feel regret when bombing, and that's because bombs are a renewable resource in that game and also has a low bomb cap. I don't feel that bad bombing during DDC for a similar reason; it's not renewable if you aren't using Marisa-B, but you can get bombs very quickly and hit your cap before you even run into something that you'd want to bomb.
That being said, I still die very often to shit I shouldn't die to because of that bomb allergy during spellcards, which are the one thing that I can't always bring myself to bomb. I have to die to that card many, many times to a specific spellcard before I start getting comfortable with bombing it, or have the the fact that I'm about to die with no way out telegraphed to me in advance. If it seems like I have a shot at getting through whatever's about to kill me, I'll risk it usually unless it's really late into the game and I think I might lose the entire run if I don't bomb.

>>16894421

Yeah, Clownpiece would've been a good choice even if tons of people would shout "pandering!" at the choice. She matches the general pattern of "Stage 5 bosses becoming playable" and due to Junko's refinement seems strong enough to handle an incident. I'd still prefer a GFW2 where Cirno and Clownpiece square off directly, though, but you'd need more than that to make the game last longer than one stage since every other fairy has appeared in GFW1. You'd need extra setup to make the game work and either introduce more characters via games and manga or create OCs for the game.

I think in Zun's work there's two meanings of youkai, one of which is "non-humans" and the other of which is true youkai. Fairies, gods, moon rabbits, etc are the first but not the second. That's my understanding at least.

There are differences between spell practice, esp. in entry time, which you don't get after a non-spell. Most games have reduced damage during entry time, but on a card with very little health it can become the difference between having to dodge a wave and not.

I was somewhat wrong, but it's very complicated. Really, as far as standard average play is concerned, the power ranking would be:
Alice unfocused, while close enough to the boss for her two diagonal lasers to also hit
Yukari focused any distance
Aya, either focused or unfocused, but only when close to the boss (similar to Alice)
Nitori focused any distance
So really if you're a casual player and stick comfortably near the bottom of the screen, Nitori is actually the second strongest shottype in the game.
There are also a ton of complicated positions with various versions of Patchouli's shottype which make this ranking technically very innacurate, and Aya directly on top of the boss (only during her bomb) is just as powerful as Yukari focused, but as far as typical play goes, that's the ranking.
Otherwise the undisputed king of damage in SA is Patchouli Wood, with only 3 power, and hugging the boss's sprite so that every bullet hits, which clears spellcards roughly 2 whole seconds faster than second place; unfocused close Alice.

No, but I think I have the pattern down anyway. The first section is just basic dodging, and the second section just requires you to stay in the middle vertically and move from one of the clones to the other each time birds spawn. The third section is just more of that as well, but it restricts your horizontal movement, and that's where I keep dying. The third section also fucks with me aurally, because the same sound used when the birds spawn is used on the humans that spawn, meaning I can't just use the sound to know when to dodge and have to try figuring out when the birds spawn with peripheral vision, which means lots of close calls and eventually I pay too much attention to the birds (usually during the last eight seconds when you have almost no room to move) and then run into a dog.

On the bright side, I learned that a single trance takes out Wild Deserted Island, so I just need to capture School of Monsters and bomb the two nonspells before WDI so I can make sure I have enough trance to activate it.

>> No.16896196

Does anyone know how to capture Mokou's Honest Man's Death? I looked at a video and it looks like the laser has some dead spots. But how you can tell where they are is beyond me. It looks solid. Spell keeps forcing me to bomb/killing me, it's a bit frustrating.

Holy shit that's good information. If I hadn't recently beaten Mamizou by the skin of my ass, I'd go test that in an attempt right now. But as it is I'm content to let Mamizou rest. Wild Deserted Island was definitely my resource dump for the stage.

>>16896196
I don't even know how ZUN programmed it, but it's extremely simple: just move toward the laser and you'll pass through it. Nothing tricky in how you approach the laser, just go through it. The title of card alludes to this, because an "honest man" will see the laser as a wall of death and try to move away from it, ensuring his death.

playing for about a decade here.
i've completed normal in every game with every shot type, EXCEPT LoLk which i only completed reisen. i've completed every extra stage EXCEPT LoLk.
christ LoLk is a hard game. even though i beat all of those games i still feel like a scrub for not even being able to complete Hard on UFO. i've completed Hard for a few other games. I'd say my favorite is TD and i'd reccomend it for newcomers or those in training.
my only good advice is focus on that reaction timing for death bombs. if you make it to stage 5 and lose those 8 bombs you were saving because you were trying to git gud it just burns my ass personally.
it's good to make it past stage 3 without bombing but after that i feel like you're being forced to bomb certain spells.
tl:dr

>try not to bomb until after stage 3

I'm working on clearing LoLK's EX stage with Marisa. Is it just me or is her hitbox fuckhuge? I am getting absolutely destroyed by Doremi even though I think her attacks look easy compared to alot of other stuff i've done. Usually I can skirt around attacks just fine, but hers always clip me even though i think i'm safe. Usually my instinct where my hitbox is at is pretty good. I know it might be comparing apples to oranges but I was playing UFO with Sanae and I could usually skirt around just fine around attacks without even holding focus often.

Are you talking about those spirals on Doremi's first spellcard? If i remember correctly the red balls have huge hitboxes and since they move in a weird semidiagonal way it's pretty easy to get clipdeath'd. Even if it looks easy you need to concentrate more and be very careful on your position on each wave.

The other two are kinda easy once you get how the spellcards work so my only advice for those is to get more practice.

PD: If you are having trouble with this then you are gonna LOVE pic related.

That's because Reimu is the god of her shrine. She is actually a living god like Sanae. However, no one believes in her, so she don't have much power. But she believes that her shrine has a god, and therefore believes in herself, providing herself with a tiny amount of faith just enough to not vanish (her powers are from thousands years of experience, not a divine miracle). Normally gods can't provide themselves with faith, but Reimu is unaware that she worships herself, so it still works. If she will discover that she's Hakurei God, she won't be able to worship herself anymore and thus will cease to exist due to the lack of faith. Rinnosuke knows that, which is the reason he's not going to tell her about it. As a god, she is immortal, but Yukari creates an illusion of aging. She also stages Reimu's death periodically, wiping out most of her memories (but not her youkai extermination skills), so Reimu would believe that she's the last descendant of the Hakurei. Yukari has to do this, because Reimu will never do something like providing divine services or attracting faith, so she can rely only on self-belief.

I also hate her in PoFV because it takes so long to charge up her specials, which makes it really awkward to play as her after playing literally any other character.

If strongest single-target damage was all that mattered then everyone playing SA should be using Marisa!Patchouli while shotgunning the boss with the Wood-shottype with only 3 power, no more no less.

I love TD Youmu. I feel like she trivializes a lot of the stages if you route properly and use your sword slashes right. Being able to use those powerful slashes on an enemy right when they spawn nets you a lot of trance. Some boss attacks are harder if the boss gets too far out of range for sword slashes, but others are easier because you can deliver roughly full power DPS while being off to the side by a bit.
I get why some people wouldn't like the shottype given how unconventional it is, but I fell in love with it the first time I used it, and the entire reason I started trying to beat Mamizou before an easier boss like Mokou or Suwako is because I wanted to use TD Youmu again.

That's only after you properly get used to the Trance mechanic that the game becomes really easy to 1cc, and of course more mechanics are just going to overwhelm new players. IN is pretty complex as well with the familiars and balancing of the human/youkai gauge, but in casual play those factors can be effectively ignored and the massive deathbomb window more than makes up for the difficulty of the patterns.

>>16911228
I definitely find SA one of the hardest Touhous actually. Bombing reducing your actual effective shot power is a heavy blow whenever you make a mistake, and Stage 5-onward is particularly brutal.
UFO's alright once you understand and get used to the UFO system, because you can preposterous amounts of resources, and once you learn to bomb through Shou's curvy laser bullshit fiesta, the lategame on Normal mode isn't really that bad.
PoFV is nice for spot-dodging dense waves of bullets, but really doesn't hone any other transferrable skills unfortunately.

Practice even in the stage portions matters a lot in UFO simply because you get more used to the pattern that UFOs spawn in, and thus get better at maximizing your resource gain.

I don't think the trance system is very hard to get used to at all, it even gets used for you automatically if you get hit. Other than that you just use it when there are lots of life/bomb spirits. Even if you never use it on bosses manually (and doing so is literally as simple as hitting a button) the game is still very easy as far as the patterns and stuff goes. I'd say it's tied with MOF as the very easiest of the windows games on normal honestly.

Speaking of said attempts I really fucking hate myself.
I have had almost a 100% clear rate whenever I attempt Mamizou's second card in spell practice mode the last few days, but I have almost a 0% clear rate when I actually fucking fight Mamizou for real.

I'm considering bombing all the nonspells intentionally just so I can soak up more trance from them, since bombs aren't very useful during spellcards and I keep wasting mine. Does that sound like a good strategy? It seems like doing so will enable me to use trance more, skipping several cards entirely and possibly giving myself enough life pieces for a fifth extra life, but I don't know how good the strategy would be in execution because I haven't gotten the chance to use it, since it takes me half an hour to even get to Mamizou solely because of Nue's first spellcard (currently 76/208 for in-game runs) and I keep having to reset due to dying to Mamizou's second and third cards even though both of them are a walk in the park in spell practice mode.

They're very simple games, you shouldn't have any problems running them unless you're buying like a 100$ potato computer. But if you're running Windows 10 EoSD will be running at approximately 12000 frames per second, vsync patch fixes this though.

>>16911659
Just the fact that it's an entire new button is difficult to get used to, like you want to keep your bomb finger on c instead of x whenever you have a full gauge. And entering Trance automatically when you die is just very inneficient.

Definitely not, but it's extremely simple so it's pretty great for newcomers. Like the other guy just said, chronological order is great. As long as you don't focus too hard on achieving a 1cc before moving on to other games, I'd definitely recommend EoSD as your first game.

You get plenty of bombs, there's no real need to even bother trying to deathtrance on normal, just use it when there's lots of spirits and ignore it otherwise and the game will still be easier than most of the rest of them depending on how often you tend to die carelessly due to being overaggressive with spirit collection.

I can fill about a third of the bar with one nonspell if I bomb and get right up on the boss during its entirety. I can get to Mamizou with 8/10 life pieces, which means I need 14 to win. There are nine life spirits during the fight (I think; I'm not sure if you get one after beating her survival card since I only got to her final card once and didn't save a replay), so I'd need to collect at least five of them under trance. It seems like it would be technically possible if I collected enough for a partial death trance and killed myself right before the end of a spellcard, but I can't see myself getting one without intentionally dying for it, which would remove the point.

Speaking of replays, I may as well post my best one so far in case anyone can find issues with it. I was doing great in the replay, but then miscalculated when I could grab trance at the seventh card, and then completely choked on the eighth and ninth cards, even though I was past the point in the eighth where I was most likely to die (based on past experiences).

I haven't even gotten to Stage 6 yet in Len'en, I can't imagine how bad it gets then.

>thcrap shit
Why do a few of you in these threads keep getting triggered by thcrap? Is managing it above your head?

The thpatch translations are the only ones for the latest games, written by the same people that made the old ones. If you want a static patch so bad you can download the translation from thpatch and pack it into the game .dats just like the old ones, if your heart desires.

It's always frustrating to lose at the last spellcard. Anyway, 99,61% at EoSD Hard with Marisa B. Sakuya made me waste too many resources.

Indeed it doesn't, but you can pipeline them. Launch vpatch.exe with thcrap_loader.exe, that's all.
Example: thcrap_loader.exe en.js ..\th06\vpatch.exe

You can use vpatch with them.
Anyone trying to argue this is just too retarded to do it or too lazy, either way, your loss.

If you haven't had any delay then there's nothing the patch would do for you.
But there's no reason not to get the patch, you might even be getting small delay and not even realising it.

What other PC98 emulators are out there? I'm not that bothered by the input delay, but for Anex86, the music/sound effects are delayed and some channels(not sure if this is the right word) of the music are blocked when I shoot.

How do you guys deal with avoiding dumb mistakes in early levels ? I got this whole run down and I'm not scared of the final boss but I make so many dumb mistakes on staged 3-4 that by the time I get to 5 I don't have enough resources to get me through the rest of the game !!

You can fix both those problems in the settings. In "Sound" change the "type" to -86 which will increase the audio quality and stop SFX from playing over the music, and in "Wave" reduce the buffer to fix the sound delay.
You should still check out the emulators other anons suggested, they're definitely better, but I'm telling you just in case you have a shit computer and have trouble running either of those compared to Anex86, since I used to be like that.

I played windowed recently while using my 1080p and I think I'll be sticking to it. It feels a lot easier to see the bullets but the resolution for this game at least isn't so small that you have to squint to see tight grazes

I'm only playing on Normal.
I've managed to get to Stage 4 without continuing at least. I posted here >>16918190 about how some of the shit in this game feels impossible to react to without prior knowledge that it's coming. A lot of patterns feel very cheap due to how little they're telegraphed. I could play a Touhou game for the first time and get pretty far just by reading the patterns for the first time and reacting, but you don't get a chance to read the patterns usually with Len'en due to how fast everything goes.
Maybe I'm just a scrub who needs to play more CAVE games like that one shitposter on /v/ always says.
