I was considering posting this over at /jp/ but I figure I'd try /a/ first since there's a good chance that you anons might actually have more experience in this matter

/mu/tant here

Why do you anons simply flail around your arms and flick your wrists with glow sticks at shows?

To be more specific,I'm having a difficult time understanding live Idol concerts and what kind of atmosphere they're supposed to have.

Can someone that's been to a handful of Idol shows shed some light?

>> No.16857334

Take just a short glance at /jp/'s catalog and take at look at our catalog and see why you're an idiot.

>> No.16857335

Probably the same reason kids throw themselves at each other at metal concerts. It's fun and makes you feel like you're a part of something.

numbers anon

/jp/ is slow as shit and scarcely populated

/a/ is one of the more popular boards, thus more numbers, which means a better chance at someone redpilling me on idol shows

/mu/ is too busy with merzbow and other shit that is completely unrelated.

You do go to shows, don't you /a/non?

I mean,you go outside in general,don't you?

That's totally acceptable to do at a lot of shows, especially with genres like jazz or shoegaze

However Idols play mostly pop music, but not just any pop music, some clusterfuck blend of modern pop, funk, jazz, metal, punk, and pretty much everything inbetween.

Teeny boppers at One Direction shows are jumping up and down while doing modern dance moves,Garth Brooks shows have people line dancing, even Kenny G has people slow dancing and smoking cigarettes.

With all of the different genres associated,is it just easier for everyone to resort to glow sticks and arm flailing?

It started as a knockoff of electronic and rave music concerts with a similar concept, problem is most Japanese pedos that go to idol concerts are very shy individuals who don't even do psycodelic drugs in big quantities like their original European counterparts, so they ended up being autistic snorefests of social outcasts flicking their wrists

yeah,sorry anon

but there's no space to do that at a live show without opening up a pit for a singular, specific song.Based on everyone's complacency however, would this be a dick move to pull off?

mind you, even hip hop shows have pits open up on occasion and fans enter to spit their own bars to the few occasional instrumental verses, sporadically that is.

>>16857352

That culture migrated to the states

I've only been to Miku Expo a few years back, and while I had a good time because I'm a fan of Vocaloid, the atmosphere threw me for a loop.Nobody interacting with anyone down on the floor, nobody bouncing up and down, and even during hype shit like PoPiPo everyone just flailed their arms.Granted it was pretty aggressive.Even Lady Gaga shows have people dancing to shit like Speechless.

fun fact,Miku opened up for Lady Gaga during her Monster's Ball tour

Miku shit in merica is definitely not comparable to a real live. Especially the Miku part, I imagine it would feel pretty uncomfortable cheering on a recording playing.
In Japan there are crazy people doing wotagei stuff and idols are interacting with fans. Amount of hugging and jumping depends on autismo levels and atmosphere varies.

You mean the fanbase of a type of music that is typically virgin neckbeards act like a bunch of weird autists at live shows? Really? No. Fucking. Way. You already knew this though so I don't really know why you're asking. The vast, vast majority of people on /a/ haven't been to an idol show and never will. Just because miku has occasional shows in NA doesnt mean it's a major thing here. If you legitimately care about the culture/behavior at the live shows ask people who actually go. But again youll just be answering a question with information you already have. "Why does this crowd of primarily autistic shut-ins act weird?? So strange, I don't get it..".

Different anon here.
I just want to point out that Crypton and SEGA have told us that all of the official Miku concerts lost money by themselves. The costs of creating a projection show is way higher than what the ticket sales could cover. The only reason they do them is because it is considered advertising for every other part of the Miku franchise. That is why they don't do that many tours, they don't want to bankrupt themselves.

The actual reason for the ritualized otaku performances at idol shows is to prevent boredom.

If you're a fan of an idol group, you go to see them as much as you can. If you live in Tokyo this can mean twice a week. Of the same group, performing more or less the same songs over and over. So otaku become active participants of the show to keep from getting bored of the whole thing.

Glow sticks are just an easy thing to do in the dark. And then idols started colour-coding themselves so you use the appropriate colour to let your girl on stage know how many fans she has in the audience.

The atmosphere is somewhere between party and worship. You're there to support your girl, there to have fun with like-minded people, and for many you're there to indulge in a bit of self-delusion.

There's a kind of language of otaku behavior at idol concerts that has become codified over the years. So there's a sameness to it all where you can easily join in on the worship of any group, but again, individual fanbases invent new unique behaviors to stave of boredom.

Very rarely is it ever about the music. The music is a pretense to engage in it all. You might follow an idol group because you prefer their music over other idol groups, but the idols are the draw.
