Nrvnqsr was, in fact, actively fighting the Chaos inside him to stay conscious so as to not be sucked into the hive mind that was rapidly taking shape within him. It's unknown why he was doing this; perhaps he wanted to see Roa again, or maybe he had wanted to die with a human consciousness instead of succumbing to the Chaos and becoming something nonhuman like Roa did. The point is, Maiko Yamase, who had been mostly unaware of what was slowly devouring her mind, had reached a state equal to Nrvnqsr's degradation at the time of his death just by failing to fight them for that short time. She was already too far gone to have continued existence without causing harm to others. Chaos was never a normal vampire to begin with and Maiko would have to eat entire corpses to keep on living anyway, so even if she wasn't becoming part of the hive mind she wouldn't have been fit to live. Bottom line, Maiko's one fate was to die... Unless she wished to become the next Chaos.
