>Go to the production company's website
>can't buy shit
>Go to Amazon
>Sugoi, here's the entire series in one collection! Lucky Lucky Lucky, it has english subs too!
>Buy that shit pronto
>The DVDs are chinese bootlegs with the tv logo mosaic'd over

I'm mad as fuck because this is the third product of Japan I've purchased that ended up being a chinese copyright infringement! I don't feel any sense of pride from owning ripoff bootleg DVDs!

KUSOOOO!

Protip: the ones that are 14 dollars for 50 episodes with subs for a country in which it was never licensed are from China.

The ones you have to refinance your house to afford and are JP only are official.

Chikushome! I've seen the ones with 5 episodes for 88-129 USD , but I thought those were third parties charging an arm and a leg because of "collector's value".

Home media are expensive as fuck in Japan. From my understand video retailers tend to make more money off rentals than purchases.

Genuine box sets come in two sorts: localized, and non-localized. The localized ones intended for foreign consumption are often cheaper, but you should order them from a reputable retailer.

Imported box sets are just retarded expensive.

I don't know what you're trying to buy but for manga, there's CDJapan, honto, Bookwalker, and ebookjapan. The last two are digital only, though you can at least finagle Bookwalker into English.

Don't ever buy anything from Japan through amazon that isn't amazon.jp, it is always marked up and amazon.jp has some very good shipping prices on certain items because of their nonstandard way of charging.

DVD/BD sets are very expensive to purchase, sometimes you can find used sets for cheaper (if the show wasn't that popular) on amazon jp, or mandarake etc.

Production runs are very short and usually a full official set runs at least $300 USD after conversion.
