>changing Yuzu's speech pattern to a normal one, (meaning she won't be speaking in the third person,)

There's no point keeping Yuzu's habit of speaking in the third person because speaking in the 3rd means completely different things in the West than in Japan. In fact, weirdly enough, keeping that verbal tick in the script could completely alter Yuzu's personality in the translation.

So removing it isn't a horrible idea if you cannot replace the tick with something that conveys a similar personality.

Really? To me speaking in third person means you have a personality quirk, and nothing more. So you are saying it would not be correct to say Yuzu has a speech quirk, and that she speaks normal? As that is the new meaning in this translation.

Else you lost the personality while trying to not lose the personality, which is awkward.

It's the implication of the quirk that's the issue. In English speaking in third person makes you sound a little crazy or off, but in Japanese it's a way of signifying a childish tone (usually). So rendering it the same way (third person speech) in English doesn't actually convey the intent of the quirk at all, it changes the impression of the character (since the important character trait being conveyed by the quirk isn't "speaks in third person" it's "speaks in a childish tone")

It just reminds me of those fake websites and videos on how these people learned Japanese and how it is easy. Yet I bet if any of them were challenged to have a conversation they would fail it easily. I even remember one person saying they learned it within a single year and was able to understand visual novels and anime. Which is obviously false.

Irony is that Japanese is really advanced and it will be different depending on the story and the novel. Some novel writers are more simple and it can be really understood if you have the basics down. But if you are talking about the complex stuff well that is going to take a lot of learning.

>At least I tend to think in my own language as a bridge between English and Japanese.
If you're actually fluent in a language, you should be able to directly understand that language (without some in-between translation) and think in that language, occasionally even finding during conversations in your native language that you want to use a word or phrase in that language you don't know how to express in your native language.

If you're using a third language as a bridge between languages, you're not fluent in at least one of them and shouldn't be translating.

>Context is everything when translating. If you're widely read and widely exposed to the culture, you'll be able to understand a particular line in a game from the perspective of the writer and the Japanese gamer. This frees you from a literal translation. The goal then becomes to leave the word-for-word text behind, and create something that will be as significant to the English audience as it was to the original audience. If you don't really know how a particular line sounds to a Japanese audience, you might misfire when transposing it into English--or worse, offer up a direct word-for-word translation that leaves the game sounding bland because that line that had a vivid life and cultural context in the original is just an unanchored string of words in the target language. Appreciation of context is also the key to creating a localization that is both a good read in English and faithful to the spirit of the original. That's the main difference between a game, book, or manga translated from start to finish by a translator, and one that is roughly translated into English first, and then rewritten by a good English writer that doesn't read Japanese.
Name five non-shit, non-Makoto translations that wouldn't be laughed at by actual professional, competent translators.

1 somewhat self taught... That is kind of a hint this guy is not dedicated that much to the language to begin with. I have been studying close to 2 years and i am studying daily. College means nothing not even classes due if you have bad study habits or even dedication.

>On this note, for anyone wondering what exactly I mean with "their translation style is quite different compared to mine", I am removing honorifics, changing Yuzu's speech pattern to a normal one, (meaning she won't be speaking in the third person,) and I'll be trying to change most terms and titles into English ones where it's possible. Just because something is different does not mean it is better. Removing Honorifics and trying to localize something instead of translating it is absolutely a horrible decision.

Hikari Field dropped the name "Smart Elves 2" in favor of just calling it Tayutama 2 for the English release, after they were told them how ridiculous the former sounded for an English release. They are also playing up that they will "strengthen the translation quality control."

I think he is also missing in the third reason and that usually is when people try to say that they learned Japanese for a year on and off, or they are just learning it and decide they will translate the entire visual novel without much reading experience. They get way in over their heads.

They then begin to realize they do not have any experience or use Machine translation to help out. They stress and they keep pushing and then realize that it takes a lot of work. Japanese is a difficult language and takes a lot of time to where you need to dedicate your life to it. It's not like Spanish or German where there are a lot of similarities and it can be understood even without much context.

This is why I will never really go against the good Translators especially Conjurer or Aroduc etc etc. We may all disagree with honorifics but what they do and the work they put in for what they get paid for is really more about passion and love for the writing than anything else. Except for the ones that do awful translations and butcher it.

The idea behind the collecting was that one could cross reference release-dates, top 5 rankings, and order number differences to make somewhat accurate estimates as to the sales of a title. It's gotten less useful over the last year or so because mangagamer's transitioned from releasing one game a month to one game a week, but one can still use them to atleast tell if a site-only title was a real bomb.

I actually used to do that but ceased doing so when the monthly releases sped up to the point that they took up the majority of the image. If you ever want to do it yourself for a month, it's a pretty simple process of taking the numbers at each end of the month and the adjacent numbers from the months before and after and dividing them to get the average for that dayspan, then using that to figure what the total would be at the first and final day of the month and the estimated total would be the difference. And of course, if you've got the first and last day of the month already, you need only only subtract.

If you mean about the stream in general, there isn't much to expect from the weekly streams they are doing, as they would hold any major announcements for conventions (especially with their convention schedule being as busy as it is). I don't know if SAO Infinity Moment counts as VN but I've no idea where to ask about it, I know there's a patched English (partial translation) ISO but I'm searching a patch in xdelta3 format made from that English release, for the decrypted PDG archive INSTALL.DAT of the Japanese ISO.

If anyone has both the English and Japanese ISO versions and wants to make a patch, I can give the directions. I wanted to update the partial translation and complete it but I can't download the English ISO for technical reasons. Pic related is a test, I replaced the player names (obviously this will NOT be in the final release, just a test).

>They are already got kickstarter money from fools. Why would they spend even more money on making something with quality?

Clannad would have made considerably more money from being on Steam than the Kickstarter by this point. The Steamspy estimate is up to about 40k (with less than 6k backers from the Kickstarter), and it has been one Sekai's better long term sellers. That said though, I do agree they probably wouldn't get much out of spending the time to properly do Steam cards.

PacuPlus has thus far peaked at 7 concurrent users, and if the launch is any indication, it is likely to be a sizable flop as few hits began with such a limited response at release.

Project Lux is much trickier to get a read on. It has peaked at 28 concurrent users thus far which isn't comparatively bad compared to other comparable titles (although it's not that impressive either), but it is an Early access title at the moment with significant limitations to controls without using a VR headset. So a short term reaction probably won't be worth much in guessing how it will do overall.

New releases aside though, Nekopara, Clannad, and Rabi-Ribi all has shown a huge response with concurrent users to the Steam sale starting.

The Eve Burst Error remake is actually a fairly good guess. There is a version that can go on Steam, and they have a connection to Hobibox.

>>16797725
YU-NO is not a good guess, as it's a 5pb console title likely to be picked up by PQube, and even if they went with someone else it would be another console publisher.

The idea with the Little Buster Ecstasy guesses is that MG could be the distribution platform for the R18 version of a title Key is self publishing on Steam. In which case it would be in line with MG getting the R18 version of Dies Irae, even if they aren't the publisher for it.

MG could pick up Holy Breaker to publish if Visual Arts has no intention to publish it themselves (it's probably the only Key-associated title they could potentially get their hands on). But yeah, Kanon and Air are titles that Visual Arts would want to publish themselves (especially Air which has a recent Vita release).

It doesn't need to be just for the West like GGN. She became a freelance artist last year and is probably working on something now, even if it isn't announced yet, be it a title made with the West in mind (Corona Blossom, Nekonin Ex Heart) or a proper title for some yet unnamed company.

Regardless of if MangaGamer got to be the publisher of the EX version of Little Busters, or the somewhat more likely scenario of them getting an exclusive launch of the EX version with Key publishing it (sort of like Nutaku with Chrono Clock), it would be a very noteworthy announcement.

Although the odds favor it being something else like Holy Breaker or a new title instead of something dealing with Little Busters.

>> No.16799781

Becoming the publisher of LB EX might be big, but I don't think it's the kind of thing that MG would announce at a con. There's a first time for everything and Key is big enough to warrant it, but it feels off when they're just distributing it. >>16799583 seems pretty likely too and it would be pretty incredible if it got announced by MG before Japan did (maybe some kind of worldwide simultaneous release?).

Surprised there hasn't been some rich anon that has fully funded some big translations before now. You see people putting down $10k+ on Kickstarter for shit so there must be some people sitting on large chunks of money.
Closest I can think of was lv1translator took some commissions from people for a few small things.

>> No.16802135

Depends on how it is done and what actions Sekai have already taken with sending out things like cease and desists etc.
There is a chance it can be traced back to him which is the main problem even if it is released anonymously. If he had done some partial then it might be more doable since it could be passed off as another group working in secret.
Only other defence he could use was he sent it out to a group of people to test it while working on it and he had no involvement with what they did with it.

Not to mention that multiple kickstarters have given us plenty of information about the lecensing and translations costs.
Not to mention that if you're the one paying, you should have full access to how much you'll spend on the license and translation along with the final saying in pretty much anything related to it.
