It's variety, so half the bits only work if you understand the references anyway.

Variety shows in Japan are like nothing else on Earth, honestly. The core concept is always pretty similar, and there might be a bit here or there that you're not really interested in, but just wait 15 minutes and there'll be a new one that has you laughing like a mad cunt. But is that simply because of their seniority or are they actually popular? Sadly, respect and popularity are not the same thing. "Barely scratches by" on "a graveyard timeslot" doesn't sound like they are all that popular to me.

On the other hand, they all have a few projects/shows, don't they? Are those shows more popular?

Well things went as they always do with popular comedians and they are not the exception.

They got extremely popular and extremely well paid. Then they referred to Matsumoto as "god of comedy" and Hamada as "genius tsukkomi" and when you keep repeating that long enough, eventually it gets to their heads.
If I'm not mistaken they are among the top 10 or 20 best paid comedians in Japan, and they are always trying something new. They have been doing some local programs also individually.
I think the japanese people overall still likes them. The whole comedy business there is completely different from how it is over here. Yoshimoto Kogyo probably has loads of people thinking of new show ideas or new ways to making good use of their comedians.

>I'm trying to figure out how/why a popular duo would be doing stand-up in a tiny studio, in front of a tiny audience, at what would be considered a graveyard slot in my country, where programs go to die.

When Gaki first started, the first half of the show was some random thing and the second half the free talk. And I bet that's what people loved the most back then. So my bet is that they are going for the nostalgic feeling or maybe the random segments aren't working anymore.

The problem is that today Matsumoto is more of a tsukkomi than Hamada.

Also, after he got married and had a kid, Matsumoto kind of "lost it". Well, either he lost it or just realized he could just place his personal life in first and comedy in second place, for a change. He deserves it.

>nostalgic feeling or maybe the random segments aren't working anymore.
I'm hoping the former, or something like Cocorico had a prior commitment so Downtown simply did their own default thing that made them famous to cover an episode. I like a lot of their random segments, it's a pity more of them can't be translated.

At least it's good to know the group is still going strong.

>Arrive and open drawers
>Watch DVDs
>Tanaka Thai Kicku
>Go for training/Gameshow
>Guests to main room
>Lunch singing challenge
>Oni tag game
>Housei gets slapped

I think that's unfortunately in part to the lack of subs on their weekly content. If Nippon TV released officially subtitled DVDs of their weekly stuff they'd sell like hot cakes.

>> No.16813462

Gaki really isn't that popular in the west. You can blame it on the lack of official releases if you really want, but the subject matter is often completely meaningless to westerners without 20 years of variety experience, even in the Batsu games.

People tend to drastically over-estimate how popular something is just because it's available for free on the internet. Gaki in particular, every week isn't an absolutely tasty or batsu game, it's probably their weakest show as of late.

I'd probably go for something like 黄金伝説 on the Cocorico front, it ended last year after 15 years and 700 odd episodes, and episodes are mostly focused on easy to understand concepts like living for a month on 10,000 yen, watching people eat far too much of a food, or watching Tanaka live with goats in his apartment for a week. Suiyoubi would be a good pick for Downtown, the variety is huge and it's generally very funny.

Gaki is overrated as all fuck by weebs on the internet, because they only see a tiny fraction of the show, and an even tinier fraction of the wide world of TV in Japan.

You'd think that all the subbers that are left without anime shows because of HS would translate more variety shows. But I suppose that the lack of a fan base, even compared to anime, and the fact these shows can last for years, would put many subbers off.

It's a pity the variety show doesn't have more fans in the West, I enjoy watching them even though I barely understand any Japanese. Take last week's Gaki for instance. I barely understood any of it, yet there were moments where even I chuckled due to the basic appeal of physical comedy (Hamada counting a simple sum on his fingers). I guess I have to wait a few more years before Google has a auto-translate application for all their YouTube videos.

>> No.16813732

>>16813599
Variety is harder to understand for your average college student subber who has taken Japanese 101 and thinks he's hot shit, contains lots of references to other shows and celebs, and involves real people who talk at normal speeds, instead of anime Japanese where everyone talks super slowly and clearly. Your average anime is 20 minutes long, while variety is usually 50 minutes or 2-3 hours for a special, you can sub an entire 1-cour for less time investment than a single episode of some shows. Add in puns and timing based gags that just don't work properly in English, and you're left with a hot mess that requires a lot of skill, a lot of work, and has a tiny fanbase because nobody even knows about it.

Auto-translate is going to be dogshit until we have AI, which is a lot more likely to nuke you than it is to translate your little girl shows.

Partially, yes. The bathroom probably had proper things restocked like toilet paper, soap and basic things. This week's episode reminds me why a good portion of Gaki episodes will never be translated: Many of them showcase amateur or new comedians rather than centre on the Gaki team themselves. This week's comedian wasn't too bad, snorted a few times myself, but many of them are painfully unfunny.

Matsumoto probably isn't as angry anymore at Hamada, since they're so old. It's tough hanging on to all that anger and hate for all those years, no matter how many times you see the guy.

The hell?
First off, I have to wait 30 minutes over the scheduled time for no reason, I thought the Japs were sticklers for time-keeping? Can they not predict how long a baseball match (or whatever the excuse is) will last?
Then, when it finally comes on, it's a poor recap of the meet-without-phones challenges? I mean, I really like the first challenge, I wish the second and third ones were translated, but I can't see the point in a skimp recap that skips most of the fun? Were none of the gaki team available to perform this week? Too busy drinking under a cherry tree?

Now I will have to wait again until next week to see, first if they are back to normal programming, then if the free-talk is back.

New Subbed Episode

https://mega.nz/#!iAB0RYSR!z5eYorWRALS0Wd670RdYVwmPOPyzOD1PzkU8vAooymM

At the time of a “Lip-sync” GNT episode, Endo did a “Mori Shinichi” impression. Mori Shinichi is a very famous folk singer in Japan who’s topped the charts many times throughout the years. Apart from his great singing voice Mr.Shinichi does indeed have a peculiar way of talking. Many impersonations of Mori Shinichi in Japan become this character with an extreme facial expression and raspy voice. Endo did his take on the singer on the lip-syncing show and seemed to get a lot of attention from fans and the cast. Thanks to that, they decided to do a segment on Endo playing Mori Shinichi, kind of sarcastically. Sometimes they drop the idea that he’s actually just doing him and in the end BECOMES Mori Shinichi, which is such a funny event to see.

How feasible is it for both of these men to continue having careers as comedians if they go solo? Judging from public perception, and that documentary about Mastumoto, it seems like Hamada's more social and eases guests into relaxing, meanwhile Matsumoto's pre-show aura is more intimidating, but he's a natural once the mask comes on.

I like Hamada, or at least his on-stage presence, but it pales in comparison's to Matsumoto's, or to his creative drive. Hamada, while funny, seems like dead weight. I guess I'm saying that if they can only tolerate each other cause of work, and since it looks like Matsumoto's got more going for him, I don't get why he stays with Hamada.

Isn't that basically the Batsu games in general?
And those are popular as can be.

Comedians, actors, sports people, etc.
A lot of it is pretty Japan-centric on top.
Hell, some of it is even word-play at times which requires someone that actually understands Japanese to attempt to translate it properly. (which rarely happens well)

Loads of the main series GnT, Lincoln and so on are fantastic. Some of them are even funny without subs for non-English speakers.

Both Akira 100% and Sunshine Ikezaki and the actors who "played" them got a huge popularity boost after last year's Batsu.

In general though, regular episodes feature practically always more or less well-established people (ie. 10+ year guys who are ironicly still called "wakate" ie. "rookie"), one notable exception being the usual New Year's party episode where the crew only sits in the audience and commentates.

The desks are always funny, there's nothing wrong with them and they always try to change it up every year. The only thing I hate that they do is that they always forget to open any of the lower drawers or forget items they grabbed. You'll see them grab one item and completely write it off.
Round table is almost always worthless if you're not Japanese since the gossip is usually not funny at all and it takes 12+ minutes to get to actual funny gossip.
Agreed.
Horror section is only good IF you have tons of celebrities and tell Tanaka to go away. Tanaka ruins it every year with his slipping and his falling and it gets to be irritating as all hell. The man must shit his pants every time his kids run behind him and go "boo". Hell, the last funny thing I can recall of it was that bit where you had the one guy in the painting drinking an enormous glass of alcohol and he just talked softly and followed them around everywhere.
