So you can't have monsters from countries considered western who live in a western way nowadays nor ones from ones in the west? So we're not using Greek, eastern European, Eskimo, native north, central, or southern American monsters, or middle eastern monsters (e.g. angels, succubi, and genies) either then, right?

>> No.16710831

>>16710819
The definition of "western" culture is pretty modern and awkward, but its heritage is in Greco-Roman, Celtic, Germanic, Slavic and Nordic cultures. And a few others, if we want to be entirely accurate.

So Greek and Eastern European monsters would by most definitions fall under "western" monsters. As would things like angels, because while they haven't originated in the west, they've a major part of the actual folklore of many western cultures historically.

But no, Eskimo or native American monsters would absolutely not be a part of "western" folklore. Neither would middle eastern monsters that haven't been accepted as a part of the western cultural canon.

I wonder if nordic elves could ever be introduced.
There's two variations that you could make (you could also pretend they are related since the words are related in nordic mythology) one can warp fucking time by being in your presence and also obscure spaces if they want to, they can also disease humans if a human makes them angry.

Then there's the other variation, which can be anything from divine spirits to nature spirits. Would figure they would be a lot like the tengu or the kappa if they were introduced and lived in their own corner of Gensokyo.

So they could range from gods, to divine spirits to psuedo-fairies (since Älvor is the literal translation of Feer into a swedish, more specifically, but have no real relation)

I mean, Gensokyo was probably the first time monsters started their own human farm, because they realized that humans would stop believing in them, so tons of monsters from outside Japan also made the big move there, but after that, do you think that other places started their own, too? Or, maybe, Gensokyo was just the first one open to the "publi," or, other monsters. Like, there could be a Greek God one from thousands of years ago, but absolutely nobody is allowed in.

Chupacabras and hobgoblins still exist in the outside world. Creatures like leprechauns, gnomes, and fairies also probably stay hidden. Though I would imagine Gensokyo is like the best safe haven in the world, since only a few extremely powerful youkai like Yukari are capable of creating such a thing. In other areas of the outside world it's probably hard to survive. That's why youkai from outside like Remilia or Mamizou move in.

Gensokyo was formed around 1885. That's really recent- early versions of coffee machines and machine guns had already been invented. Given what else we know from canon

Given Japan's respect for shinto/mythology, Japanese youkai populations likely began to die off (like the Yamabikos) relatively later than Western ones, who probably began to dissapear during the enlightenment era or even earlier- meaning Gensokyo only became a necessity later on.

Yukari's treatment of the barrier and the way people go in/out suggest a pretty tight balance [Perhaps reflective of Japanese cultural attitudes regarding integration, etc]

Either the situation on the outside is really dire and there are very, very few youkai left (unlikely given what we know in canon) or there are other, older enclaves in Gensokyo, though they likely run on different systems
