/jp/ used to be part of /a/ around the time the anime aired, so much of the people who are here today got their interest from animes.
The fact that the game had unkown characters, deeper plot, intrigued people into expecting some kind of milestone of VNs, and Tsukihime amplified that.

I never heard any hype for it before I played it so I can't really say if it's "overhyped" or not. Ignoring outside factors like popular opinion and hype (because anyone who judges games based on stuff like that is an idiot) it's a very good visual novel, although not without some flaws.
