I feel like that's just a joke that Sanae is trying to explain concepts to people who have no point of reference to even comprehend what she's talking about.

It's like the story Mamizou tells in FS where she talks about a haunted GPS in a car trying to take a family over a cliff. No one knows what she's talking about.

How is Sanae supposed to explain things like modern transportation or television or things like that to Gensokyo's residents? That people often go out to eat and do things that aren't working in a field all day? Especially since modern humanity has no concept of youkai or magic, the outside way of life is completely different.

That all being said Sanae does seem rather overeager and naive. Not outright stupid but simple.

Guns are actually really simple though, as long as you understand the chemistry and makeup behind gunpowder. Some guy once forged an AK receiver out of a shovel. People make slam-fire guns all the time.

Guns might be applicable though. In the fighting games Nitori is doing some serious harassment with water guns and Sumireko does half a bar of health that guard breaks in ULiL with a single .380 ACP round.

Spellcard battles are firework competitions, don't take the doing damage thing seriously.
Alice arms hers dolls with fucking gunpowder and Sakuya uses knives, Utusho uses nuclear fusion, this Mokou's on fire, Cirno just throws icicles and sometimes colorful pellets.

Basically as long as you can make it look good you can use pretty much anything as danmaku.
