How did you guys start to practice listening? I tried listening to stuff but oftentimes they speak too fast, and sometimes I do understand what words they are saying but I have a hard time comprehending what is being said fast enough before they move on to the next sentence.

What did you guys use to practice?

That's not how mine works but there are multiple versions of the Kanji Grid add-on. When generating the grid make sure the Field Name is set whatever the Field Name of your kanji field is called in the mining deck, or try installing a different version.

It's not actually fully voiced, there's a number of scenes where they voice half the lines. As in the character is giving a speech and it alternates between voiced line and non-voiced line. At first I thought the unvoiced lines were inner thoughts, but the other characters respond to them as normal speech. It's just a neat way of reducing seiyuu budget for such a long VN I guess.

Does learning get easier as you pick up more vocab/sentences? I've studied ~1800 kanji and I've studied about 400 sentences in and I'm definitely noticing a trend of being able to understand most of a given new sentence without seeing the translation, which makes me curious as to whether this trend continues. When I get to 4000 sentences will learning new sentences be twice as easy? Or is this a silly asssumption to make?

It does work in some ways i do admit but the problem does become whether or not you can be able to speak it and type it out in public. Or know the politeness levels.

I would give you advice to just at least read Japanese The Manga Way for Grammar. it has everything in it and it does not go in parts.

But i will admit though learning 1800 kanji is actually really helpful to nailing it down and to get your mind thinking about the vocab.

Both of these work well, they give you both the reading and the kanji, plus if you get it wrong it will just show you the right answer and make you fill it in and that is it. Its a bit more forgiving.

Actually i did nothing but watch a lot of anime and drill Vocab/Grammar. My daily routine

Trust me when i say this though as you keep drilling vocab and Grammar down, you will notice how your mind begins to slow things down eventually. It takes a lot of time, it took me around 1 year and 4 months to start getting it down where i can almost understand the words they are saying even if it's quick.

If i can give anyone any advice here, especially to those that are new do not try to translate English into Japanese, and try not to translate mentally, if you do it will never make sense. There might be similarities with time, and certain expressions but other than that it will make you look a bit weird.

I need some advice regarding purchasing and reading digital LNs. I'd like to read LNs on my android phone or a windows tablet during commutes. Right now I'm using OCR Manga Reader for Android with scanned LNs and it's pretty decent but dictionary lookup would be easier and more accurate if I purchased a digital copy right?

So I created an Amazon.co.jp account, set the country to japan, entered a Japanese address (taken from OPAS), downloaded the android Kindle app and logged on. I "purchased" some free ebooks from the Japanese store to test things out and this is what I see when I try to open them. I also installed Tunnelbear and set the VPN to Japan but I still see this error.

Okay, this makes me want to stick to piracy but before that, does anyone know where I went wrong? Should I try another ebook store - preferably one that uses a format that can be cracked so I can read it in whatever reader I want.

The main difference is that barely anyone actually reads novels on their PC though. Reading short sentences on 4chan occasionally vs concentrating on a big block of text for longer periods is a pretty big difference eye strain wise. Especially so in a dark room, always lit your lights kids.

I'm going through the 2k deck right now and I just can't remember how to say words. Everyday I see the same old stuff and I keep forgetting it. The meanings are no problem it's just those god damn readings. I really don't understand how Japanese can remember how to say all that stuff despite the Kanji giving absolutely no indication how to do it.

I'm doing two Anki decks right now (2k and Kanji Keywords) while working through Genki and sometimes reading the grammar guide. I feel like I have begun linking some things but it's still really hard. I hope it gets easier at some point.

The "meaning" doesn't matter, in fact most of the time it isn't even proper knowledge, just a placeholder to help you figure out the real meaning. The readings are the most important part, and you should be remembering them first, otherwise when you read it won't flow properly and you'll keep trying to translate everything into English.

I bet Chinese people learning Japanese feel the same. Knowing kanji gives you a HUGE head start it's not even funny.
Not every character meanings are 1:1 between those two languages but the writing system feels so familiar it's so easy just to focus on grammar and pronunciation.

Need to learn a new hanzi? You already know the stroke order, the radicals and how to learn it. Simplified characters are not even that bad:

To explain the exact situation, I didn't really have many (if any) issues with most of the anime I've tried this season for listening comprehension practice, but when I tried Youjo Senki there was a really overwhelming amount of vocabulary related to the setting that I didn't know, and I didn't really want to push through a wall of words like that via anime.

I was wondering if there were any good VNs for picking up a lot of that vocab that aren't "endgame Japanese". Vocab seen in the majority of stuff I'd come across with a war/military setting (sci-fi or not); weaponry, combat/war tactics, general terminology, maybe a bit of political vocab.

I've been living in Japan for 8 years and met a guy whose kanji level is honestly much higher than mine. However, his pronunciation and production skills are just terrible because all he does is study kanji and read. He's the kind of guy who can do well on tests but can't actually communicate in the language via speaking and writing.

I've been using memrise for most of my studying for vocab and kanji, then using anki for grammar and various difficult words/kanji. I saw the guide in this thread talking shit about memrise, so now I'm worried I'm shooting myself in the foot. I feel like it's been good for helping me learn so far, but I'm pretty new still so I dunno if it's crap for long term. Why is memrise not recommended, and should I dump it for anki completely?

Mostly just moege from the recommendation charts and random stuff like Aokana. Japanese got put on the backburner for a lot of last year though so I haven't read a VN start to finish in a while; mostly maintained it through listening comprehension in the anime/videos I watched, my Anki reviews, playing some older games in Japanese like Final Fantasy or Dark Cloud, and random things I needed to/wanted to look up in Japanese instead of English.

Thanks for the heads up, but my pronunciation is actually my strongest point. When speaking over the phone or online, people are often surprised when I tell them that I'm a foreigner.

Turns out the app never asked me for permissions to storage despite me uninstalling/reinstalling it 3-4 times. After granting it permissions to storage, it works fine.

Managed to copy the prc file off, remove its DRM and convert it to an epub with vertical selectable text. Not bad.

I might be wrong but I can't really think of anything else here.

As for the meaning of the sentence, once again not entirely confident about its meaning, but I see it as :
"When directed to oneself, words, on the contrary, don't carry weight (i.e. confidence)."
To understand the sentence better, think how when someone tells you something inspirational, or when you read something inspirational (that is not coming from yourself), it usually works and hits close to home. But if you were to say those things for yourself, their impact is much less powerful.

I only know 1500 words from anki and after reading all of zettai reiiki and two chapters of airantou I'm good enough to read prisma illya but not a VN without a texthooker. I do have a lot of out-of-anki practice not listed here but it should give you an idea where I am vocabulary wise.

I disagree that 4koma is what you should be reading, they're generally harder than normal manga, and as a beginner you'll be reading slowly and probably either don't get the jokes or not find them funny because of how long it took you to read a page.

Read Tae Kim, do core 2k and mine words, watch a few anime episodes a day and read something you're motivated in, with time you'll progress.
