I'm not saying kuitan is bad in certain situations. But if you are aiming for it at the beginning of every fucking round you're a shit player. Chances are you can go for a more expensive hand and you just cucked yourself out of winning more points because you don't know what you're doing.
And yes it does make games boring because it doesn't accomplish anything. You stop the other guy from winning? You also cut yourself short and have less tiles to defend with, good job. I fucking laugh when these guys call on every tile and then the dealer calls riichi and they can't even defend because they couldn't keep their dick in their pants. That's what you get.

There's nothing you can do in these situations, unless you can copy his discard. A double riichi doesn't play by any rules, it can be a tanki on anything.

Yes, technically the chun is the tile with the least amount of waits involving it, but there's nothing to say it's really safe. Furthermore, if you deal it, you could potentially be adding a yaku to his hand. So I'd go with the 1pin, although it's not any safer.

Game 1:
No idea what you were trying to do on E1. Once you finally stopped on tanyao you might as well riichi. With the 1p and 9m in your pond, the only thing that moves your hand to non-furiten pin fu is a 4p.

E2 the 2s was suji. No idea why you would play the 3s first. Ultimately didn't matter, but there's no reason to deal into ippatsu there. You should have gone into betaori here as your hand a) wasn't worth much and b) wasn't even in iishanten.

E4 no reason to drop the 3m before the hatsu. Probably would have kept the 2334s and dumped one of your 1p, but it's not hugely important.

S1 I don't mind the play. You got a reasonably early riichi and it just didn't work out.

>> No.16504774

>>16504687
Game 2:
E1: Same thing, dump the 2p suji before the 1p. Didn't end up mattering.

E2: As dealer the value of betaori goes down, but I don't hate the play. After C hits the riichi button though it's time to give up, and the first discard should be the 4p as it is 100% safe. You dealt a dangerous 2p when the 4p was still safe from both riichis. It's not like your hand was even that close to tenpai either.

E4: Should give up the 1p before the 2s unless you are reasonably certain you are going into betaori. Again you played a dangerous tile when you had safe ones and weren't in a real position to make a hand.

S4: The 8p into a 9p riichi is just asking for an ippatsu, but really there wasn't going to be much you could do there since you were in 4th and not really close to making anything that could bring you back.

Sometimes you just can't make a hand all game and need to try to hold out for third.

Thx for the review.

Yeah in Game 1, E1 I wanted to go for 678 sanshoku but I should have kept that 9s and thrown the 5m instead I guess.
Yeah absolutely right for E2.
Guess I threw 3m to have a chance at honitsu. And since it didn't come together I discarded hatsu later. Should have just thrown away 1p pair for a tanyao/pinfu right ?
S1, shit happens. But if I didn't make those errors earlier maybe I wouldn't have been bust.

Okay in Game 2, E1 I'm like yeah I have a good hand so I'm definitely pushing and don't care if I deal in. But you're right I should at least avoid ippatsu and discard the slightly less risky tile first.
Oh right, in E2 I completely missed the 4p genbutsu heh.
Yeah in E4, I thought since I already had my 4 groups and pair, I should just discard the potentially more dangerous tiles first.
S4 was just the desperate wait for 4p dora to make a decent comeback hand yeah.

Ok thanks.

Had you called riichi, you'd finish with +105

>> No.16536607

Step Zero: Learn how to count to ten in Japanese or Chinese.
Step One: Learn that a normal winning hand requires one pair and four sets of three tiles (triplets or sequences) and a yaku.
Step Two: Learn a single, easy, consistent yaku, like tanyao, riichi, tsumo or yakupai.
Step Three: Go for that yaku over and over until it's burned into your memory.
Step Four: Continue this process until you know every yaku, then memorize the yakuman by rote. Learn what dora are along this process, and understand that DORA ARE NOT YAKU.
Step Five: By this point you will be able to win hands but you will very often lose hands. You will need to learn defense. Seek to understand suji, and accept the fact that you can't win every hand and folding is sometimes the right choice.
Step Six: Learn that a strong offence can be a strong defense.
Step Seven: Stop going after big hands that won't happen, and stop going after cheap hands when you have better options.
Step Eight: Pray to the goddess Tewi as you wake each morning for luck.
Step Nine: In a fit of tearful desperation, learn the scoring system.
Step Ten: Take a deep breath, and give them everything you've got.

Some things are obvious - 5 pairs and you can go for chiitoi, chinitsu and honitsu are pretty obvious, lots of terminals means honchan or even honrou, and a shit hand means tan'yao or pinfu or both.

The whole "kuitan nashi is better because your big hands get cockblocked less" thing comes up pretty often but really, it's objectively less fun. Need a fast hand? Better hope you're lucky enough to have yakuhai.

Aka nashi is dreadfully boring too. Having fewer dora means that riichi is the best way to raise your hand value. It's much harder to reach mangan unless you get lucky with the regular dora. Since the average hand value is a lot lower, there's a lot more incentive to riichi, even if you have to chase someone else's riichi, and the end result is just a contest of luck.

Kuitan and akadora actually serve to balance the game and increase the element of skill. It's not the game's fault if you or the people you're playing against can't handle them properly.

>> No.16539473

>>16538888
Nashi/nashi actually requires a bit more thought and effort than ari/ari. Kuitan nashi means you do have to build your hand around whatever you have and gain value without mindlessly drilling efficiency and relying on aka/ura to boost your hand value to acceptable levels. It also means people have to play more carefully from the very beginning, because their own chance at mangan-potential hands is lowered, meaning they need to actually think and play around another person's mangan instead of recklessly charging forward to complete their own hand. Aka nashi means you value dora tiles more highly and also, again, might consider yaku that are outside most efficient discards because their boost to your hand value is actually relevant. The outcome of the game isn't as skill-based (because your ability to respond to other players is reduced), but it's still true that stronger players will win more than weaker players.

That's a deficiency of japanese mahjong, which wants you to get one strict yaku per hand rather than multiple fan (basically small yaku modules/units with point values depending on the module, with the minimum score required to call mahjong being 8 points) per hand. I'm sorry you like playing pon palace to get open tanyao.
I'm also sorry you can't play with enough skill that you need to get lucky and get red fives to raise the scores of your hands.
