I have to fucking say a word out loud 20 times, and come up with the different variations and sentences i could hear the word in, until i could even consider picking it up in natural speech.

Has anyone here bothered to learn to write all the Jouyou kanji? How much of it have you retained?

I've been reading in Japanese for six years but only recently decided to try learn to write using pic related, with the aim of possibly improving my recall and reading comprehension as a byproduct. I'm wondering how quickly I'll forget everything when I'm done.

I learned how to write when I learned the kanji, it was nice. The real thing it brought me was the ability to actually remember things. Nowadays, after I've forgotten how to write anything, I literally have to be looking at a kanji to copy it into Google.

I'll see something, go "okay, so that's X radical plus X radical and the right half of X kanji" tab out, draw the first radical, and then the rest is a total mystery. I still know the names, but I have no way to draw them, because I only have recognition, not reproduction. I can type just fine, because I know the pronunciations and can just scan the lists, but I literally couldn't even write 私 anymore.

I kind of wish there was a better kanji tool out there. Something where I see, say 懐, but I've forgotten what it means. Instead of drawing the whole thing, or going through some dumb radical list that always takes an hour, let me just write in 壊, then deselect 土 and add 心.

I did this with the first episodes of a dorama, but then the following ones didn't have subs and I just kept watching without them. It was still a nice experience.

The thing about those shitty soap operas is you don't have high expectations, so you don't feel bad for losing content and can just watch through it all, grasping the parts you can.

Start with the Anki 2k? Should I worry about picking up the kanji right away or concentrate on the vocabulary?

Kanji are totally baffling to me

Each one is it's own word?
And also each one is a sound when in conjunction, and this sound and meaning doesnt necessarily correlate to what it means or sounds like when alone
And it can also sound and mean different things in different contexts

Also its non-phoenetic so you cant "sound out" a kanji to figure out what it is

I tried to watch Guilty Crown with Japanese subs since I don't have any expectation for that show but subs weren't synced, after trying for a while to sync them I realized how much of a waste of time and annoying it was so I ended up not.

Next time I want to do that I'll just use Animelon I think, although I hate streaming what they provide is not bad at all considering you can directly mine from the subs.

What does romanization have to do with it?
The ha/ga mistake is a grammatical thing and the o/wo sound variation happens in Japanese as well, you'll hear it being pronounced "wo" in lots of media. Should we say hiragana is also not the ideal method for studying, since お and を may have overlapping pronunciations and は is read as わ sometimes?

This doesn't mean all that much. Look at N1, it's for non-natives sure but it's easy as fuck for anyone who actually tries and still 50% of people fail it. People are just bad at judging themselves. Or they make the test itself the goal, which means they try to study exactly as much as they need for the test and no more, making the test much more difficult than if they were learning for other reasons.

People who have taken Japanese in college, what were the best option workbooks you've used? We're a beginners class, so I'd assume an N5-N4 one, but the teacher didn't give us any homework or workbook, just a textbook that you can't write in.

They are known for extreme bloat and are really long. Basically stretching out a 10 hour story to 50 hours. And that bit of story isn't very good either usually. Irosekas Shinku route is the best thing they've done which is actually quite decent but you have to complete the shit routes before it.

I don't know why it interested you other than the art, but if you're looking for an nakige to practice with I recommend サナララR. It's short and presents its scenarios as short stories so even as a slow reader you won't feel it drags.

Suggestion: A tab for properly-timed anime subs to available releases in the CoR. There are a decent amount of them scattered around kitsunekko but you can't tell which have timed subs from the main page so having a repository only for stuff that works out of the box would be useful.

I'm a filthy WK user and I wish there was an easy way to import stuff into it just like there is in rikaisama for Anki. Yeah, I know, it's better to just use Anki, but it's super convenient and I can pull it out anywhere, even on university computers, and I don't have to juggle any installed software to do some reps that way.

It doesn't help that I don't want to give up on my botnet browser to get rikaisama going. Wish they'd just make a full-fledged branch of that for chrome already.

Anyone like me or went through something similar?

Since I've been able to read what I want to read more or less comfortably it's become sort of hard to motivate myself to continue studying day by day I must say (anki, advanced grammar, reading, ...). Before there was an incentive to push and get better in order to reach a certain goal but I feel like I'm lacking this now. I'm N2 by the way, and speaking of JLPT I once aimed for N1 but... while I still do I'm not exactly in a urge to pass it either since my situation is on the way becoming more stable (i.e. not really in a urge to have a diploma anymore).

I'd like to add that this doesn't have anything to do with my interests in otaku culture, this hasn't changed and I'm still fully into it, I just feel like I'm lacking this feeling of anxiety I had before. Sorry for "blogging".

You learn them as you learn words. Nobody learns readings independent of words cause it's useless. You can learn all the readings for a kanji but not know which word uses which readings, defeating the point. Thus, you learn the readings as you learn words. If you want to study kanji independently outside of words (which you don't necessarily have to do), all you need is to memorize their meanings (aka keywords).
