I learned how to write when I learned the kanji, it was nice. The real thing it brought me was the ability to actually remember things. Nowadays, after I've forgotten how to write anything, I literally have to be looking at a kanji to copy it into Google.

I'll see something, go "okay, so that's X radical plus X radical and the right half of X kanji" tab out, draw the first radical, and then the rest is a total mystery. I still know the names, but I have no way to draw them, because I only have recognition, not reproduction. I can type just fine, because I know the pronunciations and can just scan the lists, but I literally couldn't even write 私 anymore.

I kind of wish there was a better kanji tool out there. Something where I see, say 懐, but I've forgotten what it means. Instead of drawing the whole thing, or going through some dumb radical list that always takes an hour, let me just write in 壊, then deselect 土 and add 心.

Kanji are totally baffling to me

Each one is it's own word?
And also each one is a sound when in conjunction, and this sound and meaning doesnt necessarily correlate to what it means or sounds like when alone
And it can also sound and mean different things in different contexts

Also its non-phoenetic so you cant "sound out" a kanji to figure out what it is

弁護士な男

弁護士である男

>> No.16482869

>>16482863
also note that 弁護士な男 is not normal, just like how you can barely translate it into english

I would have used の but that would have made the explanation more confusing, and の is ambiguous whether it is possessive or attributive.

弁護士である男 is also not common.

>> No.16482881

>>16482863
>>16482869
Yeah, that was a bad example since there are other ways to phrase it, but suppose I need to use the copula in a relative clause and, since I obviously can't use だ or です, I use である, but the rest of the sentence is casual. Would that sound weird or stiff?

>> No.16482890

>>16482881
In terms of simple constructions, な is the attributive copula for "abstract" things and の is the attributive copula for "concrete" things. However, like I said, の plays double duty as attributive and possessive, because the nounのnoun constructions is a first-class genitival construction, so it is sometimes ambiguous. な and である are always copular (in the cases given) and never possessive, so the ambiguity does not exist.

>> No.16482898

>>16482881
>>16482890
Also, yes, である is sometimes weird or stiff. It's である after all. Normally you would rephrase what you're saying so you don't have to do a weird attribution in the first place. "The person that is a slave" is a very stiff construction even in engilsh and you'd normally just say "slave".

This doesn't mean all that much. Look at N1, it's for non-natives sure but it's easy as fuck for anyone who actually tries and still 50% of people fail it. People are just bad at judging themselves. Or they make the test itself the goal, which means they try to study exactly as much as they need for the test and no more, making the test much more difficult than if they were learning for other reasons.

People on the left are eager to give advice, but their advice isn't as useful because they lack experience. They will have an answer for everything, and tell you with complete confidence, even when they're totally wrong.

People in the middle don't want to give advice because they recognize their own ignorance.

People on the right will give advice, but only very carefully. They recognize the limit of their knowledge, but still believe they can be of use to others.

Sure you're in a text box that allows you to type?

I can be in this quick reply box, switch over to Japanese (hiragana) input and then click out of the box into the general thread (where I can't type anything) and the input will switch over to Half-Width Alphanumeric, but clicking back in the text box will have it switch back to hiragana.

Anyone like me or went through something similar?

Since I've been able to read what I want to read more or less comfortably it's become sort of hard to motivate myself to continue studying day by day I must say (anki, advanced grammar, reading, ...). Before there was an incentive to push and get better in order to reach a certain goal but I feel like I'm lacking this now. I'm N2 by the way, and speaking of JLPT I once aimed for N1 but... while I still do I'm not exactly in a urge to pass it either since my situation is on the way becoming more stable (i.e. not really in a urge to have a diploma anymore).

I'd like to add that this doesn't have anything to do with my interests in otaku culture, this hasn't changed and I'm still fully into it, I just feel like I'm lacking this feeling of anxiety I had before. Sorry for "blogging".

You need to learn to read Japanese for kanji, which are an essential aspect of the language. Learning vocabulary without kanji is extremely difficulty and if you try to operate without them you'll be often lost in normal conversations that reference the kanji of the words they're using (for instance when giving someone their name, a Japanese person will often list out the kanji in their name as in (i'm John, that is J O H N) -> (I'm 月雨, the 月 from moon and 雨 from rain)). The reasons can go on an on - kanji are important for learning Japanese. You can't skip them without making learning Japanese FAR harder than the effort you save by skipping kanji.

Okay, makes sense. But what about pronunciations, just gotta memorize them all or is there a better approach? 1 kanji can require you to remember 5-6 distinct aspects

>> No.16498124

>>16498090
You learn them as you learn words. Nobody learns readings independent of words cause it's useless. You can learn all the readings for a kanji but not know which word uses which readings, defeating the point. Thus, you learn the readings as you learn words. If you want to study kanji independently outside of words (which you don't necessarily have to do), all you need is to memorize their meanings (aka keywords).

>> No.16498144

>>16498124
Okay, cool. How do you approach learning words then? I've had trouble with that specifically with japanese because of the writing system. I work with a lot of spanish peopel so I approached learning the language by writing down new words as I hear them and just reviewing their meaning but I have plenty of bilingual people to ask if I have questions about the nuances, not so much with japanese.
