Of course we all know that Tokyo is the center of everything, with Kyoto and Osaka being secondary, then in the south you have okinawans, and in hokkaido it's snow and ainu, but that large upper-middle area is just ignored. This. I had a friend who lived for a long time on the Misawa Air Base, which is way up on the north of Honshu. What you said is accurate but it's more like the Appalachians than the Rocky Mountains since apparently the people that live there are considered backwards rednecks compared to the rest of the country, and the weather was apparently shit too. He had little nice to say of it.
