Without context it is sort of hard to be sure, but here is my interpretation:

If I had been sick (in bad health) then it would have been okay for me to be sleeping (it wouldn't have looked bad), but, embarrassingly I am in perfect health.

だらしのないことに The grammar point is ことに (see DoJG)
だらしない does not mean loose (slut) here, more like if your room is all messy that means you are だらしない when it comes to cleaning

It means the speaker feels that what he has done is だらしない. I substituted embarrasingly because I couldn't think of a good word. English is my first language but I am having a brain freeze on how to explain it. It's not really complicated, I think my brain is just tired. Maybe someone else can try.

The ending particularly, the rest was fine, but her shutting herself out like that at the end felt annoying and the couples ending up in a surprising way just didn't really work for me. For that reason I feel like what I liked about the movie ended up getting clouded. Glad you liked it though.

I watched it that way and it was fine, but I did when it first got out, it's been a while now so if I were you I'd just wait a couple more months for a better version. Watching it that way right now is just not worth it.

If you want more anime movies I recommend you 5 centimeters per second & 言の葉の庭 by the same author (Makoto Shinkai). KyoAni make really good movies too, I'd say Tamako Market and Kyoukai no Kanata (both series) are worth watching just so you can watch their respective movies afterwards. Considering you liked 心が叫び I have a hunch you'd like Tamako Market. Hibike Euphonium too.

Speaking of anime yesterday I marathoned Ping Pong the Animation and it was pretty great.

Fuck, I'm pretty sure I did an okay N5 but now I'm getting anxious about looking at my results.

I know it's just the baby test but I still had to put in some effort and travel and go on a whole journey to another town to do it. I hope I did okay...

No, N5 is a shorter (around half an hour to 45 minutes) test so it ended up being relatively cheap. My school also does something special for its students since there's no way to take the test in my town, they book a bus and lodging for students in the other town and basically take care of everything right up until the point where they hand you over your entrance certificate at the exam's location.

It's a cramped hostel deal with four people per room, but the trip itself can be quite fun. The test was ridiculously easy on the kanji part but as soon as particles got involved, things started to become progressively more complex.

As an aside, I was very surprised by the amount of time you have to actually do the test itself. I have a few certificates in English and in all of those tests, you pretty much have time to read, re-read, and read again whatever question/text you're in. Not so on this test, the examiners themselves tell you to not even bother to jot down answers in the question sheet, as you won't have time to mark them on the answer sheet later. I was in the twentieth question out of thirty five or so on the kanji section, when the examiner tells us we only have ten minutes left so we should start writing down our answers in the answer sheet, which was very surprising.

Sorry about the blogging, I just couldn't talk to anybody about the test until today so I wanted to get it off my chest.

By this you just mean picking an answer from the 4 or so available, right? I thought JLPT tests were only made out of 選択式問題 and you didn't need to write anything at all.

It has kanji, but it's extremely basic stuff like 人, 日, 本 and such. Hell, the most "complicated" one I came across was 雨.

That section lures you into a false sense of security, because you can be like me and know a far greater number of kanji than the test actually requires, but then struggle on the other sections since I basically started with grammar a year or so ago. It can be extremely devious if you've been doing nothing but grinding Anki for the first few months of your learning.

I'm not really a fast learner, my classes are only for two and a half hours on Saturdays, plus I'm in my university for most of the day which cuts down on Japanese time.

I'm satisfied that I was even able to do a test. I could've sprung for the N4 instead but there's no point, it's not a race to the top for me. I just enjoy being able to read the odd doujin or gelbooru text bubble every now and then. Games are extremely text-heavy by comparison and I don't even dare to try and penetrate into the realm of light/visual novels, so it's not high on the list of priorities for me.

If you plan on working over there, you should definitely go for N1.

You could take N1 right away without taking the other levels first. Definitely skip N5, that one is a joke. N4 is apparently also really easy. I personally started with N3 last year, went really well so I can definitely recommend that one as first level to take. Of course if you wanna save money, you could always just study until you're super confident, then take N1 and be done with it, but it's not like they're expensive.

I practise writing kanji with my normal kanji anki deck. When I don't know the stroke order, I look it up on jisho. Speaking is kinda hard, since I study by myself. Probably gonna focus on that soon, although speaking/writing doesn't help with the JLPT at all.

Nah, I just do my reps every day (core10k (90% through), KanjiDamage (finished), Heisig) and read some Tae Kim. Takes from 30min to one hour every day. Also games and anime, that helps with vocab and improves reading speed and listening skills.

Make a mining deck from scratch and put your words into it. If you've added words to core so far you can cut and paste them into this newly made deck. The style of the deck should be different, too, it should have its own one, that way core won't bother you about duplicates.

It's fine to re-mine words you learned in core since rikai has broader definitions than core does, and if you feel the need to re-mine something that means you haven't really learned it anyway so it's a win-win.

Mining shouldn't take you 30min, it should only takes a few seconds. Use google translate to draw kanji you can't read or recognize.

How do you use こと?
From what I`ve learned so far in grammar books, it can be used for converting a verb into a noun and also in some
fixed expressions such as ことで and ことに.
However, they seem to use this word quite often and in some cases it doesn`t make any sense to me, such as in "あなたのことが好き。"

I have never read a VN, but anything with audio like anime or drama or playing JRPG should be pretty easy.
LNs are fine too for me, but real novels I have to look up stuff quite often.

Generally speaking I find reading is a lot more effort than listening, but from earlier djt threads it seems for most people it's exactly opposite.

I don't know how long I've studied for, probably around 2 years or so, but I have always felt more at ease while listening, especially when I started I just binge watched drama and looked up words on jisho by sound and context.

I didn't look up everything, sometimes I'd replay the scene a couple of times to see if I could get it then, but I still mostly went at a comfortable pace.
It also depended on how much I liked the show.

I remember having problems with the word 原因 because to me it just sounded like げいいん and from the context I was 100% sure it had to mean "cause".
Was really happy when that finally came in anki.

Listening: 55/60 (thank you anime)

My grammar is so terrible and is def my weak point. The reference information was A for each section, so I got more than 67% of the responses correct in all three sections of grammar, vocab, and reading. Trying to square that away with a 73/120 score on Language Knowledge.

In either case, here's to N4. Need to buckle down and get that kanji under my belt, no more furigana to help me! And must practice grammar, jesus I need to practice grammar.

Learn ten kanji a day for some days and you can read Jump manga.

Start small. Don't just grind kanjis. Read stuff to actually feel your progress. The more times you meet a word in a text, the more likely you will remember it. Anki was boring for me, but actually reading stuff was interesting and I remember quite a lot just from constantly reading|(and hearing). Yeah, VNs are best for practice because they are hookable(unlike manga you can have text that you can actually take and google), they have voice acting so you
learn how things are pronounced and they have visuals so it's easier to guess what's happening in a sentence by the background(and voices/sound effects) when you're still new and struggle with getting even basic sentences.
Just get a texthooker and read something you like.

I'm at a point where I can read normal stuff fairly easily while using a hooker sparsely, but I have trouble reaching the next "level".
I tried reading Romeo but long passages, two/three layers of jokes and references in every sentence, uncommon grammar and a vast vocabulary trip me up really bad. Every second sentence I have to reread 3-4 times and sometimes I still don't get it ending up simply skipping it.
It's really frustrating. I know the answer to this is probably just "read more" but still... it feels like my progress has slowed down to a crawl.

My retention is poor and my reviews are steadily increasing, any idea how I may fix that?
I did the mistake to drop core for a few weeks to read more, I learned a lot while I did that, but I also noticed it was still to early to drop core completely.

My retention is fucking shit about 60% (true retention), my reviews went from 270 to 380 in a week, I do 20 new cards.
I did cramming sessions to hopefully lower the reviews, but that didn't seem to change much.

Do you think the long break fucked ankis cycle and it'll be getting better soon or do I need an extreme cramming session to properly learn the words to increase my retention?

You could have individual boilers for each room and then just charge for gas use, it probably depends on the country, age of the building and such. A young Japanese adult will HAVE TO check words he doesn't know in a dictionary in order, not only to pinpoint the meaning right (if per chance he knew the meaning by kanji guesswork) but to READ them. Incredibly stupid. People will come at me telling me how kanji also have positive points - it's true, but it doesn't erase the shit points either.

All in all, am I still butthurt about this piece of shit of a language even after years of study? Yes. Would I change it? No, because it filters idiots and it's most likely (among others of course) one of the reasons Japan is one of the very few countries which was still able to keep their culture and uniqueness instead of getting washed away in a typhoon called globalization.

When I started reading it only took me a month or two to become comfortable and get to the point where it'd become normal to me, but that's because I had watched a lot of anime, had learned how to write and had studied grammar quite a bit beforehand.

I know someone who unconciously put a word-final downstep (the kind you only hear when you put a particle, like 花, not like 鼻) as the default pitch. It sounds foreign, and it's hard to break a habit because after a while you think it sounds correct. That's the situation you want to avoid. Some people will be fine just imitating, but it's surprisingly easy to not notice a bad habit.

Think that's impossible? If you link a sample of you reading something out loud, I'd be happy to see if there's any pattern in your pitch mistakes.

Got a puzzle for you guys.

A character is calling out one of their attack names. She says 「てんしょう」 immediately before one such attack name. It's definitely part of the name. The only clue I've found for what it could mean is the fact that she says 「絶招」 (ぜっしょう） before a different attack which is actually Chinese and means "Ultimate Skill." I'm worried that this てんしょう is Chinese too in which case I don't even know where to start looking for the answer. Can anyone even point me in a helpful direction?

I spent a long time on that before bugging you guys. The problem is that this is something very new and this attack has never been used before.

天 is fitting for the attack since it's lightning-based which is another reason I've been leaning towards it. But you might be onto something with 天照 since it's also fire-based and the 照 can mean to shine or illuminate.

Dammit, I had settled on using "Supreme Skill" since I'd hoped that that was generic enough to get away with it but now you've got me considering stuff like "Divine Light."

Anything on Japanese TV has "subtitles". Basically whenever they speak or announce something or make a joke, it's either directly subtitled or some sort of subtitled summary appears.

You can just see by yourself, pick a subject google/youtube it and watch. It is indeed ridiculous, but that's how it is.

So how does the Microsoft IME work for non-Japanese systems when entering Kanji via romaji.

When I enter あいらん followed by a press on space it fetches the correct compound word it seems.

The last three Hiragana need a few space-bar presses.

When I press space on the full line the first Kanji is thickly black underlined, while the others are thinly underlined.

(Sod that, seems to be a Chrome-Bug throwing a wrench into the IME.)

I think the subtitles being everywhere is more a cultural thing than anything but perhaps there are more reasons to this. It looks like all it does is give you the percentage of how many you clicked. Since it doesn't check to see if you are actually right or not (since there's no way for it to know) it seems pretty useless.

For N1 the 2nd and 3rd tests appear to be broken and return a blank pop-up box if you score between 51-89%. The others may be broken too, I didn't even bother to look.

How does the DJT Anki deck compare to a common Core2/6K deck?

My biggest concern with most vocabulary decks is only recognizing it; the inability to produce. Have any of you found this to be a problem with either deck?

There is no DJT Anki deck.

Production decks are bad because:
- There are too many synonymous words to go from English -> Japanese. You're going to have to rattle off two dozen words every time "quickly" comes up.

- It takes time away from reading. You will automatically be able to produce a word if you read it a lot. You should be aiming to minimize your Anki time, a production deck will double it.

I get that. I should have known that too.

Do you think media in cards (audio, pictures, etc. ) is more or less effective than cards that don't have extra media? My biggest worries are excessive time needed to do reviews + syncing media. Regardless, my utmost concern is proficiency in both reading and production. If I need to study for a longer period to achieve greater gains, so be it (within reason).

Do you have a deck to recommend you think would best satisfy my needs?
