There's the thing, I don't like auto-mode either because sometimes I skip the dialogue because I've already read it. I love the voice acting, but it can really double the hours I put into reading Umineko, and it's already a long fucking novel.

What I do is start from the end and work yourself backwards. Create a locked room and now go through every possible plausible way it could have been done. Now get rid of the plausible ways and get a definitive solution, probably the fifth one you thought of because everyone will have thought of the first four, so to say. Then plant the hints and clues to suggest one of the first four explanations and watch people fall for red herrings. I'd love to see you try a mystery anon. Well I'm on my maiden reading of it right now (spammed screens all the time in the last few threads) and all I can say is that Minagoroshi has some of the weakest writing of all the chapters. Actually everything about the consultation center and Teppei was pretty good, but this fight scene with the club members and the mountain hounds was too hokey. In my headcanon I think, "Rika has become the witch of miracles already, so Satoko manifesting a jumprope out of nowhere and choking an adult, or time stopping but everyone still talking to each other just happens via Bernkastel's magic but overall Minagoroshi was a let down compared to the last chapter which was actually really great. Ryukishi at some point had a bad deus ex machina habit though, even if it's not as prevalent in his later works.

Seeing Rika's character develop into who we know as Bernkastel in the next series though is pretty satisfying. Made sitting through all of the SoL scenes very rewarding.

Higurashi. Reading Umineko first spoils the whole time-looping system and makes it easy to figure out that Rika keeps her memories between the chapters when you remember how Bern's origins describe her as suffering a logic error for a very long time. When picking a setting you should think how the mystery could carry itself without being a simple murder mystery. I think there should be some supernatural being that can be blamed, like Oyashiro-sama's curse or the Golden Witch. Maybe this is what R07 wants to change, but I'm willing to thnk it isn't. Thinking like this, I found that a pretty interesting setting would be a big city (Tokyo or something) in the urban parts, where a serial killer is loose with urban legends spawning about what or who it is.

With the exception of the Satoko events everything else happens after watanagishi but Rena's confrontation with Rina takes place before Watanagashi. If it was the default set of events Rena would have Killed Rina and been mainpulated by Miyo in most arcs.

You misunderstand, but you're not the first.
Rina ALWAYS had troubles with the Sonozaki because of debts, but she never ends up dead in nearly all kakera. Do you never wonder why? Something interesting is that Rika mentions that the Satoko event is something that is very rare and in ep 7, we find out why. Mion says that Rena came to see her and talked to her about her troubles at home. And this caused the Yakuza to 'take care of Rina' which makes Tenpei come back to Hinamizawa. This applies to the same events as ep 3, as they are the same scenarioes, except with K1 finding out a way to save Satoko rather than kill.

They key point is that if Rena talks to Mion about her troubles at home, it triggers the Satoko event. Meaning that ep 6 only happens if K1 doesn't go insane, if Shion doesn't go insane and if Rena doesn't talk to Mion. These are the conditions that determine which kakera take place.

Finding out who killed everyone is a pretty good motive. In a meta sense, Shion becomes the character in the sense that she goes directly for all the people who were in charge of the conspiracy. You learn for three chapters that the Sonozaki family, Rika and the leader of the village are all behind a huge conspiracy that ends with the village getting destroyed. And Shion, upon understanding that, goes ''well time to just fucking kill them all and find Satoshi. It's genius and direct.

Tatarigoroshi itself was a complete fuck fest, unreliable narrator and all. I assume K and probably Satoko both go insane, Satoko only because she saw her uncle after he got his head cracked open.

No. Only after a certain part in ep 7 that the mystery becomes somewhat solvable. It gets to a point where you think 'okay, there's no one who can be the killer' and then reveals the truth. It's very much impossible to figure out the motive of who is behind everything.

Umineko, in contrast, is solvable by ep 4.

Well anyway I'm going to read on later. Tatarigoroshi was no help at all so I'm listing suspicious people in no particular order.

Sonozaki + other village big shots: Why they would want to fuck their own village I dont know but I remember Mion's grandma is listed as dead in Watanagashi for some reason as part of Shions spree even though it was never mentioned during the chapters events. They definitely killed people previous years.

Takano "Fake corpse" Miyo and Tomitake: Takano had a fake corpse in a drum while she was perusing torture impliments with K and Shion. Tomitake also has his part of K's note (Tomitake was killed by an unknown drug) in Onikakushi ripped out along with the syringe/marker? He rips his throat every chapter I believe but K never gets drugged so it can't be that

It really depends on your own preference. Personally I prefer the steam sprites, but the PS2 version has some really nice cgs. Not sure about any translation differences though.

The first half of Higurashi has free use tracks, so it's not that memorable for the most part, although it's still better than MangaGamer and more varied.

Kai shares composers with Umineko, but the similarities are mostly in dai tracks, the happy or sad songs. The zts tracks there are very different from his tracks on Umineko (worldenddominator, lastendconductor, dreamenddischarger, etc).

I'm not sure how to patch the newer versions, but when I read it I used the erogedownload versions, and patched following instructions in this page

Higanbana is a pretty good collection of short stories about bullying, suicide, death, more bullying and the fun of bullying. It's worth reading for the Actress girl story and the Running girl story.

Rose Guns Days is a mixed bag. It starts off slow and none of the characters have chemistry that Ryukishi is known for. You start to wonder why you should even bother reading but then after the first mini boss is defeated and the first real villain shows up, it gets good. RGD is absolutely worth reading for the villain. Season 3 is up there with some of his best, like Higurashi ep 6 and Umineko ep 5. Cultural keikaku jew warfare. It's glorious. And there's a part in Final Season that will make you scream as hard as you did at the ending of Umineko ep 3.

Well, heavily would be an understatement, but it's not the core points of discussion. It's more about mafioso shenanigan woooo shonen fun until shit gets real. Like, you know Ryukishi likes his historical commentaries and it gives very unique introspection into Japan as a culture, more than just concepts about nationalism. Today I finished Umineko. I was so sure it was going to have a happy ending, especially because of how good the Higurashi one was. Even if Lambdadelta said there wouldn't be one, in red, I just trusted that somehow the result could be changed.

It definitely didn't, and I absolutely loved how he ended Beatrice and Battler's stories even if it's bittersweet as a whole. I'm not very sure what Ryukishi was trying to do with the Toya thing, but it worked to give Battler, Ange and the whole Rokkenjima incident closure. It still makes me really sad, especially considering what happened, even if Ryukishi doesn't want you to focus on what really happened.

I think that people overreact to the lack of clear answers, and make it a way bigger deal than it is. Ryukishi may have gotten a little preachy at the end, but the message he tried to convey made a lot of sense storywise and themewise. I really hope that the negative reactions he got from it don't affect his future work negatively.

Sayo didn't want to kill everyone because of the promise. It was because of how she felt disguisted with her blood being the same as Kinzo's who raped his own daughter to conceive her. The drama with her three personalities only made her pain deeper.

The explosives were consistent with Kinzo's past, and if you don't like that Sayo's the killer, make your own theories.

The main thing the manga changed was saying that Meta-Battler is Tohya's identity as Ushiromiya Battler that was lost at sea, rather than the piece from Legend's gameboard. Personally I prefer this explanation, but I do think the original ending scene was done better, with Battler and Beatrice reuniting at last.

Based on what I read in the manga, I see it more like Meta-Battler is the one on the left who had already passed on, and the one passing on is the actual Battler from Rokkenjima who was trapped in Tohya.

Your interpretation also works though, they may even be the same with different wording.

I liked it a lot, but Sayo's past was too slow and Willard executing Clair made no sense in the VN. I also felt that Lion character was a bit superficial and that he was kind of unnecessary beyond being a plot device.
