Why is Tokyo so perfect? It fills that beautiful future-noir aesthetic, especially in the rain, but without the whole risk of getting shanked by crackheads if you go out after midnight.

If Akihabara was still an electronics center and not tourist filled otaku-bait I would move there tomorrow. I'm sick of ordering the simplest of electronics in 1,000 unit batches off of aliexpress.

Only if you get a real job, there are plenty of shithouse jobs in Tokyo that don't make you deal with the whole business structure bullshit.

Realistically, I'd have to live in some tiny town a little west of the mountains, that's where all the good wood is and shipping trees isn't really viable.

Also, I don't know how successful some white dude making furniture would be, I would assume that industry is saturated with 8th generation master craftsman.

The trick is to have cheap hobbies. I can make enough money washing dishes in chinatown to support my chinese cartoon habit, and still have enough left over for the occasional scale or soft girl.

Good thing I already have all of my woodworking equipment though, literally a year and a halfs salary in tools. I don't sell any of the stuff I make though so I don't even know if I'm any good. I mostly just make gifts.

You'd be better off doing it in the states. There is very little job security or pay as an English teacher in Japan.

Most of the English "teachers" in Japan are ALTs, which is a job where you act as little more than a glorified cd player.

I guess you could kind of makr a living doing it at the college level, but even there an English teacher is considered as lower than a 'real' teacher in Japan even by the Japanese.

That is why I like my mirrorless.

Small and light, so hanging by a strap or thrown in bag is no issue.

Plus it boots from off in under a second, so when I flick the power switch and bring it to my face it is ready to go.

I found it way quicker then pulling phone out, unlocking, waiting for camera app to open. Plus it takes way better pictures and doesn't fuck my cellphones battery.

I feel Tokyo epitomizes the feeling of metropolitan loneliness. Where there's people all around you, but you still feel alone, since no one has any reason to care about you. Even more so if you're a foreigner and everything is alien to you. And the overwhelming concrete jungle surrounding you always reminds you of how small you are. I think this whole feeling comes across really well in Lost in Translation, it's kinda a major theme.

There's nothing wrong with it, but you're not going to make a living on it. ALT jobs are really just a way to get your foot in the door before you begin to apply for other jobs that will sponsor your work visa and will possibly lead to a financially stable future. To be frank, the only people that stay there are the one's that marry Japanese nationals (they knocked her up),the sexually depraved that couldn't get "some" in their own country, pedos (not even joking), the weeb girls who can just give any Japanese dude a hard on and trap them into marriage for citizenship.
As for teaching English, you don't really teach anything at all, and what you do teach the students don't really care about. Sad truth, I know, but hey, you don't see US kids learning French, Spanish, and German (language classes that are common in the US high schools/colleges) fluently at all either.
I could have gotten a gotten hired at a sushi/bar restaurant due to my past cooking experience here in the US but I personally didn't want to live in Japan anymore. It was very nostalic for me, personally.

You can tell from the pictures that it's built like a grid. Thanks to being founded in the late 1800's, which is very young by Japanese standards. Sapporo probably has one of the most simple subway layouts in Japan for a city it's size.

What can I say, I'm a well educated and skilled person in a field of research where I've earned some respect, but having looked into getting a job and a wok visa it seems nearly impossible. Companies there don't really advertise and prefer to head hunt people and teach them themselves. Whatever you do outside of Japan doesn't guarantee that companies and research staff there will know you or respect you even if they have looked at something you did. You need a work visa to work there and I don't want to really apply for one without having a job offer since I'll likely be rejected and waste my time. It would also have to be a special visa for people looking for jobs and from what I've read you can't actually change your visa type while you're there, so if you find something you'll need to reapply for another visa type.
Not to mention that even if you do get a visa and start to work there if you want to leave the country you'll need to apply for a "re-entry permit" since you won't be let back in with your visa after you leave. This is just retarded, are researchers really meant to do that when they visit conferences and give talks, which can happen a few times a year? Not that any research I'd do there would be public for me to talk about, I'd likely end up filing for bankruptcy if I leak company secrets there. Maybe I should look to do a postgrad there but I doubt that would be easy as well and I'd have to leave or find a job afterwards to stay there anyway.
The visa situation is one thing but I bet the work and company culture would kill my interest in doing any research and eventually I'd leave. Which is okay since so far I've left 2 countries having worked there a few years each. Man it all sucks.

I found the guts because I realized I had nothing else going for me, so why not try something I thought was really stupid. I've only been here for a week, but things are very convenient. Being on the plane didn't matter, thinking about it too much doesn't help. Just drop your deep thoughts and answer the main question, which is "Do I want to leave my current living arrangements to see what Japan is like?" Then start working on ways to do it.

I'm here on a working/holiday VISA and staying here with someone I talked to through AIRBNB. Lucky for me, they let me stay for 3 months in Fukuyama, so I'm essentially renting a place from them. No one has seemed dangerous and people even leave their doors unlocked. Convenience stores are plentiful, so you can always eat there as well. There is a lot of walking to be done, though. I would say I got super lucky, since my host has helped me meet a lot of people, but I have also made friends through my own means.

The only thing I would say is make sure you can at leqst use basic Japanese phrases and are ready to accept different ways of living.

Basically, be an idiot. Sometimes it's a good thing.

There's nothing else going for me, either, but sadly I'm still not at the stage where I'm confident enough to leave my family and hop on a plane to the other side of the world by myself.

Were you living alone where you came from? Because you said you're just like me, and it's hard for me to imagine someone like me who's living with their parents doing that journey. Also what kind of visa is that? I know there's a holiday (tourist) and work visa, among others, but the only short term visa I read about that allows you to work is a student visa. How long can you stay in Japan once your rent is over?

Also what do you do every day? I assume you don't do much sightseeing there.

As for Japanese, I can speak it quite it a bit so communication is the least of my concerns (although I've never had to speak it outside the internet).

P.S. Didn't you say you were living in the countryside? Because I looked up Fukuyama and it turns out to be a pretty big city.

Came knowing little more than hiragana (a few college courses and drinking parties with Japanese exchanhe students) for a year long intensive language program (12 month student vida with 6 extra past the end, option to work up to 28hrs per week), ended up doing the language program a second year (I am terrible at languages). Did good enough they gave me a recomendation for grad school and thats where I am now. Doing research for my grad degree while I do as many part time jobs as I can find.

For example, what if things didn't work out long before the course was over or if you didn't get along with the other students? When I think about language classes for foreigners I can't help but also think of African and Middle Eastern immigrants. It might be different in Japan though.

I figure Japs would be begging for non-African immigrants considering their population decline.

The students changed every semester. If it sucked and I hated everyone, it was still only a year. Plus I could just devote myself to studies and actually learn something.

It was mostly Chinese and Koreans. Americans/Europeans only counted for about a third. There were a few Middle Eastern and African students.

But everyone is a weaboo just like you. You can get along easily with most of them. Or at least I could, and I am not the most sociable of people.

I guess Fukuyama isn't a countryside city, it's just a normal city, so my apologies for that. I just walk around and explore, but it's been fun. Then I get home, cook, shower, take care of other household needs and read manga to get better at Japanese. It's peaceful, but I plan on going to Hiroshima city later in February. I'm an introvert, so I'm lucky people approached me.

Again, only you can really answer that question. If you already know you don't have enough of a reason to go, then think of alternatives. If you can't, just make sure you have a return ticket, so you can return home. Unless something stops you from doing that. In which case, that makes things harder. But being out here really does show you what kind of person you are, especially if you are living on your own.

Missed some things, but I did actually live with my mother and this is the first time I've ever lived alone. Once the rent is over, maybe I go back home and work hard at something, there isn't a plan quite yet for that. Or maybe I meet a girl here, marry her, work random jobs and whatnot. As for the VISA, it's good for at least 6 months, then you can renew it for another 6 months. Its a one time thing for Canadian (and other countries, not sure which ones exactly) citizens between the age of 18-30 and meet the criteria.

I'm slightly scared since I've lived my entire life risk-adversed, but I figured I needed to break that trend and do something that seemed crazy in an environment I didn't know, but had always dreamed of immersing myself in, not just talking about it to random people about it for years. Also, a Kotatsu is fantastic.

I understand.

I still imagine that when you have a lot of people from so many different countries then there might be some politics involved, but perhaps not every time.

Also a year is a very long time. If I were there and hated it then I wouldn't be able to stay for even another week. I guess it really depends on the person though when it comes to how much frustration you can endure.

That's cool.

I've always wanted to be the kind of person that is able to travel the world alone. Ironically, I turned out to be the exact opposite. I want to be able to get by on my own where I am right now, and only then I could start thinking about living abroad. Again, I guess it depends on the person in question. Some people can just go for it, and sadly I'm not one of them.

Aren't you idealizing Japan?

I am quite sure Japan has its own quirks that are not readily apparent.

I don't understand, if you are an unskilled neet living with your parents, how the hell do you get the money to travel to japan for 12 months and doing a course that I assume costs money as well?

This speaks to me but honestly I've done nothing with my life for so long that just the thought of trying to get a job or go back to school is plenty risky enough for me. Good luck on your adventure.

I asked my parents.

They covered me for one semester, and my grades were good enough for a scholarship after that. Tuition was covered and I got pqid $300 monthly.

Yeah I've read about people who are like that. Or people who don't feel negatively about Japan but can't stop seeing the country and the things it does as a novelty. "Japan is so crazy lol!" and other such phrases usually turns me off from the person immediately.

Still, I hope that that is a loud minority and most people over there are sane and not an embarrassment. If I were to hypothetically go over there I would strive to not be anything like that and just treat people like people. Japan isn't a big deal, but it's still nice enough to warrant a visit or stay if you can, I think.
