One of my new years resolutions is to embrace my weeb side.

Where can i read up on touhou lore, story, etc (I do not play games, so I don't want to play the touhou games). So far I've been fapping to touhou and having an interest in its characters (gapfag) for a while.

I also want to learn japanese, I know where to learn the kana, but where is the best place to learn grammar and vocab? (I want to become good in conversations and vocab before learning kanji, i know its controversial but thats how i wanna do things for starters since I am not planning to visit japan in the next 5-6 years, I'll have time for kanji next year onwards.

You're missing quite the experience by not playing the games, but I won't judge. It's by far the best way to get used to and learn about characters, so reading the manga without playing the games may be a little confusing.

Yeah sorry, it's been almost 4 years now since I last played a video game for more than 20 minutes, I just don't like them anymore, they feel like a chore and not a game to me.

Last game I played was Dark Souls III (was a fan of the first one), I played it for literally like, half an hour, then closed it off, confirming my hate for games in general even more.

Learning to draw must be fun, but takes a long long time.

But one thing I hate with people who know/learn how to draw is that they only draw pre-existing shit, and waste time on drawing another out of 10.000 images of Reimu, as if you're gonna gonna create anything better than a scroll-through image on pixiv.

Instead of using their drawing skills to create worlds, and characters, and draw the abstract of their mind on their canvas.

No, just draw another Moku being retarded. That'll save the touhou fandom.

Here's a shitty way to do it, but I guess it may have a similar effect to actually playing and enjoying the games. Download them, set lives and bombs to max, and do a playthrough of them on easy. You won't get the best endings, but you can look them up. The danmaku patterns and music portray the characters very nicely, you'll be able to remember them easily. At that point, you're barely playing a game and can treat it more like a movie that you press buttons to make work.

The problem with not playing means that there's no real mental association to the characters made.

For example, take Hina. By just reading the wiki or print works or doujinshi, you gain knowledge of her, bit you don't retain it because you have no mental association with her. However, of you play the games, you'd easily remember her and her role in the series because you remember "oh yeah, she's the stage 2 boss of MoF". After that, you can remember "stage 2 was the path to youkai mountain. why was she there again?" and think back to the game.

If you REALLY don't want to play the games, you can just dive into the wiki and official character profiles, but it'll be hard remembering and having personal opinions on every character and place.

Understanding and appreciating 2hu characters is not hard, just do it like most /jp/sies do

I'm not, I just gave a way to make it less stressful but still get the experience.

It's still possible to understand and appreciate all the 2hus through other means, but it's hard to fully appreciate or understand a 2hu that you've never encountered in a game. Reading the game dialogue on the wiki is VERY different from actually playing the game and experiencing their personality, danmaku, and music first hand.
