Tokiko has way too high a rank, though that might be since I kept voting over her touhous I dislike. I think the Yakumos could be a tad higher.I just feel neutral about most of them and spam the tie button. The top and bottoms ones are fairly accurate though.

There isn't many chapters to go by, but from what I learn about Clownpiece is that Hecatia sent Clownpiece to Gensokyo without any way of getting back, and Clownpiece doesn't really wanna go back either way. You learn that despite not wanting to go back she's still proud of her hellish heritage.

You can't really compare ViFS to manga like FS and WaHH because they are much further in, but for what we have right now it's pretty nice. Also, even if the situations are basically nothing, just know that nothing much happens between incidents anyway. It's a peaceful time in Gensokyo, and you're seeing how the life in Gensokyo is during these times. That has always been the point of Three Fairies of Light. It's a lighthearted and cute manga series.

Clownpiece is more then a meme fairy, you know. If you've read the manga, you'd know that Hecatia wants her to thrive on the surface since she feels that Clownpiece would benefit from it. She's also making some new friends she hasn't had before, via Sunny, Luna, and Star. The entire manga isn't really a serious one, anyway, so there won't be much character development. But still, it's a great portrayal of Clownpiece.

I blame just waking up but I managed to not save a picture my list from this morning. First place was a three way tie between Aya, Mokou and Kasen. 4th was between Yuuka and Okuu. For some reason Sanae was dead last and I only saw her once or twice throughout the whole thing, which is weird because there are definitely characters I dislike more than her. There are definitely characters who are popular with many secondaries because of design or jokes that are completely fanmade, but Hell I ended up really liking characters like Reisen (bunny schoolgirl? really?), Remilia (loli vampire), and Yuuka (LOL SADIST) way MORE after playing the games and reading stuff, whereas previously I thought they were probably lame characters. I think that being a shitty person gives depth to her character though. She was afraid and her fear made her do a lot of bad things. Despite all the fear she never gave in to despair and was still able to make her dreams more or less come true. Though her kindness might only extend to youkai she is still capable of it and I think that says enough. Whether she genuinely cares for them or only sees them as a means to an end is debatable I guess. I will admit that I have not looked into the manga so I would not know if she was shown to be completely evil there or not.

I also like the Buddhist aesthetics and I think body enhancing magic is pretty cool but that's something else.

She's not quite one of my favorites, but I think she's one of the more interesting characters. I do find it puzzling that some of her fans seem to think of her as youkai-Jesus, though. She is a small, cute fairy, has pretty long dark hair and a nice outfit. Plus, I like the colour blue and how she is associated with stars. Marisa is loaded with memes but there's nothing wrong with liking her. In fact, if you like her and you're not a secondary then I wouldn't blame you. I like how her happy-go-lucky attitude contrasts with her somber backstory, how she's pretty awful at the one skill she should be good at but that she still tries her hardest despite being picked on by others, and how she is surprisingly competent in other areas. Also her design is super cute, and I really enjoy her theme.

My #1 is put there for shitposting, but my actual #1 (#2 on the list) is Mima. I like Mima's designs, her musical themes, she's my favorite MS shottype, and I enjoy her character. She's as developed as a PC-98 character could possibly be and I want to see more of her regardless of the "I can feel it in my bones" meme where everyone demands Mima come back just for the sake of rallying around something.

It probably helps that I played the PC-98 games before the Windows games and spent like two months trying to 1cc them before moving on, so my perspective of Touhou had Mima as the third-most-important character in the franchise (behind Reimu and Marisa) for a while before the big retcon of everything PC-98.

It's a mixture of backstory, concept, canon personality, my own perception of that character's personality, character design, and to a lesser extent stage theme.

It seems to be a topic that gets argued about a lot but I think there is not a single person that doesn't have their own notion of what a character is like due to how little information there is about some of them. Some characters just don't have much of a presence outside of the game they show up in and the information in the symposium stuff so you end up trying to fill in the blanks yourself.

Take it in and consider how brilliant a move that was.

The moment I saw her I immediately thought that she was so cute, every expression she makes and everything she said. She has an infinitely beautiful design. She is a very good final boss and how her last card was very hype. All of her themes are brilliant and I love her shottype in IN.
I love stuff related to ghost, and she is a ghost princess, that's pretty much as good as it gets for any girl I may like.
Maybe all that combined with the fact that she's very smart but carefree. When her theme started, it gave me the feel that I was to fight a very elegant yet powerful girl, which she is and I love.
She is the kind of person I wouldn't mind hanging around with for the rest of my life.

My number 1 dropped to number 6 in sorting recently, making me realize that my top 6 or so are all different shades of 1, so on that note...

For my previous number 1, I absolutely love "stupidly overpowered" characters who do next to nothing with their abilities. I also find her pleasant.

For my current number 1, she's fucking absolutely adorable. She won me over as soon as she appeared and with every one of her dialogues. Also, one of the few completely OK youkai in my book, since she's helpful and nice.

Current 2: she's an unrepentant shithead, I love it. I just really love that brazen attitude that fucks with everyone so deliberately.

Current 3: I find her to be absolutely hilarious but also completely badass. Very fun to play as in the fighting games. Just super, super cool and silly.

Current 4: DORK. That's really all it comes down to. Such a fucking dork.

Current 5: Possibly the only Touhou character in the entire franchise to have character development within the current series. A likable personality and a good character arc make her sometimes feel like #1 in my heart, which is how she toppled the previous number 1 when I was sorting...but she still turned out to be 5. Like I said, up there they're roughly equal.

Youkai aren't people, Byakuren knows this, they can't be merely persuaded to defy their natures, and yet she continues to pretend they can, while explicitly enabling them to continue to harass humans, who in turn get no protection. All in the name of... equality?

I'm not denying Byakuren's developed character. But anyone who insists said character isn't a racialist, two-faced egotist clearly misunderstands her design. Probably takes their interpretation from doujins, too.

You didn't really make it obvious, I think. There aren't many human village characters but "Kokoro = Heart" so I figured that might be it. Koishi technically goes through changes throughout the series.

And I can't think of any other Ex characters with character development. Maybe Mamizou, given the human village stuff, but ain't no one ever called her design and cards beautiful.

Her dialogue isn't all like that. Only her UFO SanaeA scenario has her hellbent on doing well with youkai hunting. Besides, she's adorable in the mangas.

UFO: SanaeA isn't overpowered in any way, shape, or form. It's a jack-of-all-trades shot. SanaeB has the strongest bomb in the game, but it isn't OP.
TD: Sanae is the worst shot in the game, so I don't know what you're talking about.
LoLK: She isn't broken here because she has the weakest shot power from a distance, but she does make 1ccing the game a breeze along with Reisen.

Opinions dudes. I personally love the color scheme.

I don't think you've read the story or the endings too much if you've come to that conclusion.

come to think f it, I guess you could call her friendship with Sumireko "character development" since previously she had almost no friends. There is also, of course, her incredibly elaborate backstory where she goes through many changes.

Well it's no choice I'd knock; she's in my top 10 and I think she's rad as hell. I don't really remember her spell cards too well, but I don't remember most -- I'm terrible at these games.

She already IS a hermit. She states she's training to become a Celestial. Also, that's not what hermitage is about: the PMiSS section says something vastly different (even if it references...sutras? But she, Buddhist or not, is a hermit) and certainly treating people as servants isn't part of that lifestyle.
Buddhism is a religion/philosophy about accepting your own physical death to trascend wordly attachment, so the whole "If youkai stop attacking humans, they will vanish" is logically fine. Byakuren wants them to attain enlightenment with her. She humbly admits she's a novice and she certainly doesn't come off as arrogant or narcisistic as Miko, nor egoistic, since all the work she's done for others has been detrimental for her reputation. She used to protect youkai for fame, sure, but she abandoned that route a long time ago. Also, this doesn't have anything to do with doujin: pretty much all the ones I read about her portrayed her in a negative light.

It was actually pretty clear it was Mokou: it's 2010, so before TD. Flandre is a shut-in, Ran doesn't exist, Yukari is a trickster, Suwako mostly stays on Youkai Mountain, Koishi would rather "pillage from a bunch of peaceful humans" and everyone fears Nue. Mokou is the only one who could fit.

Sweet theme, least haughty of the Lunarians and a nice outfit, although I like her initial professional-looking suit and tie and medecine-seller looks best. I also really have a weak spot for the whole "war veteran-turned-farmacist" backstory, and like how her pragmatic office-worker personality clashes with her powers.

I normally otherwise tend to gravitate more towards supernatural entities that keep an eye out for the humans and try to keep them safe, but she stands out to me from the rest enough to put her above those characters.

By her being originally from the moon, she is labeled a Lunarian. A Lunarian isn't so much a species, but closer to a nationality. Sagume is considered a Lunarian even though she's actually a goddess.

Also something to be aware, Reisen didn't actually go to war. She fled to Earth before the war started.

You got some things backwards. A hermit having an ultimate goal of becoming a celestial is not anything weird. It's actually fairly common. Now a hermit like Seiga wouldn't be doing that for obvious reasons. Many celestials in heaven were formerly hermits, even shikaisen like Miko. Taoism is about seeking your own way to enlightenment, so those people being her "servants" is nothing really strange. If she didn't have human servants, it'd be animals. (Looks at Kasen [and yes I know she's not a real hermit]).

Byakuren may not come off as arrogant or egotistical, but deep down you know she is. She automatically labeled Miko as bad before she even woke up. Miko has a reason to be snarky towards her. However, as you saw in SoPM, HM, and ULiL, Miko was reasonable enough to give Byakuren due respect when it was necessary. She allowed Byakuren to do what she wanted with the occult orbs, even though Miko told her it was useless what she was trying to do. Byakuren is a novice, and oh she is definitely a novice. She has not the experience that Miko and Kanako possess. She is the least competent of the religious leaders of Gensokyo, and it is very apparent by her actions. Also, "protect youkai for fame", don't you mean exterminate youkai for fame?

If Byakuren was to take on an action to exterminate a very dangerous youkai, then my respect for her would go up. Why do I say this? Because then it would be clear that she is not exclusively biased toward youkai. Yukari would exterminate a youkai if it was necessary. Mamizou would do it too.

Because she's the coolest. Her elaborate cape, her attacking motions, her entrance and win poses in VS mode, even the simple act of moving towards her opponent she does with a perfect air of smug confidence and bravado that surpasses even Miko's. She's cool, she knows it and she isn't afraid of showing it off. It speaks to me. And this charm is enhanced by those moments where you can see the dorky flying teenager underneath (her time-out animation, and some other of her motions, which show just how much fun she's having throwing stuff at people). It helps that she's so pretty. I think she's beautiful. And while her personality is certainly a bit rotten (the first chapter of new CoLA exposed some hypocrisy from her part, for instance), you're still left with a smart, very hardworking girl whose pursuit of knowledge doesn't appear to have an end.

I enjoy her style of slow-but-powerful attacks in ULiL. It feels very satisfying to bash someone's head in with that street sign. And while there's not much I can say about her other player-character spellcards, Gun Sign "3D Printer Gun" is a delight for me just for the sheer audacity of it. Why not, just bring a gun to a danmaku fight. The ability of telekinesis is a favorite superpower of mine, which gives her plenty more points in my book. And her theme is fantastic, one of the best songs in the entire franchise in my opinion.

Sucks that she isn't more popular but I suppose it's understandable. After all, her design makes full use of her status as an outsider to create someone that is just that - an outsider, someone who doesn't belong.

Where did you pick that up? I remember Eirin mentioning Reisen fleeing during the war, not before it. As for whether she actually saw fighting, it's pretty ambiguous whether there was any fighting at all throughout the conflict, but I'd imagine it would have to be bad enough for a Lunar Rabbit to drop everything and flee to the "impure" Earth to go into hiding.

I feel like the power levels in SoEW were a lot lower than in later games. Reimu shows clear signs of struggling in her dialogue even outside the bad end and is a lot greener in general when it comes to her job, which makes the opponents less powerful as well. Mima is dangerous but isn't obscenely powerful like later final bosses (even in the PC-98 era there's an actual god as a final boss later on), Marisa is similarly green and is still an apprentice, and like you said the Extra boss is completely mundane and only relies on technology to hold her on.

I liked unconfident Reimu in that game's "already used a continue before the end of Stage 4" route. We need more unconfident Reimu.
