Because idols are not the only thing in life, let's talk and share other kind of japanese music.

I'll start with Suyoubi no Campanella's new PV (new album coming next year it seems) :

I like Shinsei Kamattechan a ton! They're pretty weird/abrasive but that's the sort of stuff I like so I'm a big fan. It's a shame most of their album songs get butchered for their PVs, maybe their studio is desperately trying to make them more radio friendly by mastering them to sound less harsh? Or maybe it's just Noko being weird as usual.

Maybe japanese rap is different? I don't listen to many japanese rappers and I don't speak japanese so I wouldn't know, but I think the culture plays a role, I can't imagine japanese, even rebels, having the same kind of lyrics than US rap in general for some reason.

I used to like Mucc a lot, now everything they do is pretty much "meh". I don't know if I grew bored of it (been following them since the beginning almost, well Homura Uta) or if they can't renew themselves.
They tried with that electro/dance album a few years ago and it was ok despites my initial reaction.

visual kei used to be more rebellious and had more male public in the early days, acts like Buck-Tick, D'erlanger and X had lots of male fans.
Eventually it became more stereotyped and girls dominated the scene (in terms of public, ironically there's very very few actual female musicians).
But no, there's a lot of great visual kei stuff.

if you like malice mizer you might like babylon, I tought they were one of the most interesting visual kei bands of recent times, they disbanded a while ago though

They are becoming my favorite band since I've discovered them a few months ago.
I'm still mad I didn't look them up a few years ago after seeing their OP for the girl in a futon show, I remember that I really liked it back then.

The Noko album is often overlooked, it's mostly remixes but it also contains this song which I've never heard anywhere else and has quickly become one of my favorites:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kHKXPvFYbk

Has anyone seen their film?
That was a unique experience to say the least, I've enjoyed every second though.
Now I understand what people mean when they say Japanese live action has low production values.
What also weirded me out was the storyline about them "selling out" to a big studio.
I don't know much about the behind the scenes stuff but considering the film came out in 2011 that is pretty much exactly what happened at the time?
I often have a hard time judging how self-aware a lot of Japanese art is.

Yeah, it seems a lot of people are into Kpop now (every single time I go to /mu/, Kpop thread is 1st post on page 0, every single time).

I'm looking primarily for City Pop, Shibuya-kei and AOR music, but I'm interested in 70s - early 2000 Japanese music in general.

The music from nowadays is not that hard to find, but older things are often only available in shitty quality or as FULL ALBUM crap on YT and I dislike that those things have to be cut and retagged.

I know absolutely nothing about KPOP, except for maybe BoA.

The thing is with the Japanese charts being taken over by a purchase-heavy niche audience, JPOP is unfortunately simply not as interesting anymore. There is barely any variation.
That is part of why I was interested in looking at Kouhaku Uta Gassen this/last year. Getting a grip on what the fuck is going on in Japan at the moment. I mean, people probably still listen to music over there, right? But there is barely any mean to learn what they listen to. I mean, for example, end of last year radio.garden made the rounds, and there is fucking nothing in Japan.

I can't download anything on that site, but I already got the vampillia+jun album.
It's really beautiful but painful, I haven't heard Jun sing in a while except for the other Vampillia collab song, but her modern voice sounds really deep, and very dark. She still goes to her usual high notes and her operatic antics, which I love, but modern Jun reminds me of Leonard Cohen, it's like she's trying to sound old on purpose. It goes well with vampillia's music though.
I think I pretty much loved every single song on the album, very different from the original versions, but I was expecting that. "Suki suki daisuki" is as dark as I imagined it would be. The new song, however, is pretty cute.

I'm now on the look for Uchoten's new album, "Kafka's Rock/Nietzsche's Pop".

There is a significant difference between being "popular" and selling.

AKB and the likes are on the top of the charts, but normal people don't actively listen to them.
It's mostly due to single individuals buying hundreds to thousands of copies of the same CD.
Looking at what is listened to on Japanese streaming portals would probably yield a better estimate. (If anyone knows where to get those numbers, I'd be highly interested.) Unless of course there are fans that have started running scripts to artificially push them.

Dir en grey has definitely some cool stuff they put out, and they were variated enough in their sound from their early indies era to their current sound.
I find myself loving some albums from different eras, like Macabre and Uroboros, IMO their 2 best works, but I also enjoy stuff like Missa or Dum Spiro Spero, although not as much.
Dir en grey started being basically one of the MANY many bands that were influenced by Kuroyume. If you look at the indies VK scene circa 1996/1997, that's when DEG formed, you'll see a lot of very similar bands to them.
The real beef with DEG was in their early 00s days, when the internet started having a numerous visual kei fanbase, Dir en grey had just released Macabre and that album was great, Kisou followed and was also well received. The turning point for Dir en grey and its fans was 2002/2003, when they had a drastic change in looks and sound, first with six Ugly, then with the release of Vulgar in 2003, when many fans noticed they had gone full nu-metal. I personally liked Vulgar, but yeah it did had its huge nu-metal influences (which at the same time, also defined the sound of 00s Visual kei).
This said, I like Dir en grey, but they're far from being my favorite visual kei band, I prefer many other smaller acts that didn't get as popular as them, but I consider to be more interesting or just plain better. Bands like Lamiel or Da'vid/shito:aL were much more interesting to me than Dir en grey. And from major bands, I prefer bands like Janne Da Arc or Pierrot to Dir en grey, but DEG are still cool.
I like many 00s VK bands, but my favorites are 80s and 90s.

I don't know Togawa a lot (even if I was always impressed the few times I heard her before) but yeah this album is great. I just wish Togawa would use more of her vocal range like she shows sometimes instead of playing mostly on the "old woman" type. But maybe she can't do otherwise, her voice's just fucked up seeing how crazy she seemed to be before (on some moments she kinda reminded me of Goto Mariko in the crazy spirit, but of course Mariko probably admired her).

I guess so, for a while they were like "we hate vk, please don't come to our concerts doing cosplay".
Lately, they've been slowly going back to their roots though. Well, not exactly like in MISSA/GAUZE-era, because that kind of VK simply doesn't exist anymore, and their sound has changed a lot, but for example Kyo doing his solo project (sukekiyo) had fellow VK musicians as the backup band.
I also remember Kisaki (ex-La Sadie's and current Osaka VK godfather that produced or managed like over 500 indies bands in the course of 20 years) posting a picture with Kaoru some time ago, at an event for Kisaki's birthday, where of course VK bands played. For the longest time I thought there was hatred between Kisaki and DEG members, but I believe it was only Kyo (apparently Kisaki cucked him back in La Sadie's days)

Campanellas new album is here, it has some good sons. Ikyuu or whateverbis my least favourite. Whole album has summer like vibe and most tracks are dance club banger type.

Listened to it earlier myself. It's definitely a banger. Campanella fans won't be disappointed; they're getting better with every release.

This girl is so likeable.

Also waiting for Daoko's new album. I wasn't sure about her new songs but I really like them now.

I heard a Miku or Vocaloid song during or after the VGA's with lots of Awoo's. Any ideas?

I'm excited. I listen to "THE" all the time, it's great. Hopefully they'll stop in the US for a tour sometime. I want to see them again

Not sure if I'm not in the mood, but I find the new Campanella album boring. She's swimming in her stereotypes and I can't feel a thing.

I'm afraid for Tricot's future too, they got potential but...
