I know I'm going to sound like a pretentious faggot but I really feel like not being able to relate with people who can't speak Japanese and watch/read translations. In the case of anime it's ok (as long as it's not dub obviously) but for anything related to manga, LNs or VNs I don't feel like we're even consuming the same thing. When I finish reading something I sometimes check the translations and it just makes me irrationally upset.

I don't think most people realize how most translations out there are terrible, and how it's impossible to convey something in Japanese to English without having to lose a lot of nuances and details and having to lose the writer's idiolect. I think most people are too used to see languages like English, Spanish, French and so on, which can be translated from one another pretty easily without having to lose much if nothing at all, for them to realize how greatly different Japanese is.
That's also one the reasons I ended up completely dropping /a/ this past year or so, in the end the only threads that kept me visiting were the raw manga ones but even those stopped being a thing it seems.

I never said anything about hating translations, nor I said all translations were terrible (it's rare but there are some relatively good ones out there). If I really "hated" them I don't think I would occasionally take the time to see how others do so in order to inform myself and ponder on what sort of translator I could become.

Can you give your shot at translating those in a better way?

I have recently watched a movie in my native language with English subs and I found all the important things being said were correctly translated, but the nuances, slangs and figures of speech were cut off - they would require a lot of footnotes, or going full retarded with informal writing, like when localizers try to turn Kansaiben into written redneck.

That's what I believe is happening in the third one, for instance - he just gave the general gist instead of talking about the many attempted attacks and whatnot.

The second one seems fine to me - both convey a "if YOU are the one doing it, my guts tell me it will get done/succeed".

Drink it up.(emphasis)

飲むんじゃない:

He/She drinks, doesn’t he/she? / They drink, don’t they?
I guess he/she drinks (they drink) (when you assume something) showing your uncertain feelings.

飲むんだった:
I should have drunk (showing your regret feelings)

飲むんじゃなかった:
I shouldn’t have drunk. (showing your regret feelings.)




In the past tense, it becomes "I should/shouldn't have x". Shouldn't it go like:

I drank.(explaining)

Can someone explain this to me? Tae Kim's guide is really lacking on this part and my search elsewhere didn't return any satisfactory answer either.

In the non-listening part it depends on how fast you are. On N1 I ended with 20 extra minutes for extra checking. But previously on N2 I didn't even finish in time.

In listeninig you need to write the answer immediately. They play the audio only once.

As practice it's best to learn Japanese.

Just an observation from my first two weeks of using the Core deck:
I disabled the card images and it's forcing my mind to recognize radicals and primitives and has helped me recall kanji at a higher rate. Before I was associating the Japanese spoken word and the English meaning with the image and not the kanji. The value of my Core deck went up quite a bit with this in my opinion.

Why is Japanese so heavily contextual?

When I read I occasionally bump into some longer sentences which contain only words and grammar I know but it takes me a while to understand who the fuck they are actually talking about / what the point of the sentence is. It's the kind of shit that could be fixed with a couple pronouns.

How do I use Anki? Do I just look at the kanji and try to recall their meanings? Am I supposed to learn all the different readings? There's a "stroke order" picture but it's all one colour and it's unnumbered so it doesn't tell me anything about the stroke order.

In a way, this thread doesn't seem like that bad of a place after all - there are no chinks on /int/, but there are lots of doujin material translated to Chinese (sometimes not even Japanese raws are available, only Chinese), specially over Sadpanda.

booking and travel is all done online and in English if you pick hotels that expect foreigners. just read up on the railway system and you should be fine. also, make sure you have access to (at the very least) an offline map, otherwise you're obviously going to have no clue as to where you're going.

as for eating and "getting to know many places", all you really need to know is how to say hiragana/katakana, basic grammar, food vocab, and some words. pretty much the only words you say when you eat are "はい" "(food)+を+(num. of food)+ください (optional)", "すいません", "お会計を", and "どうも"/"ありがとうございます" if you find it necessary to say thanks. however, going through the 2k/6k anki deck for a month would probably help you out quite a bit.

as for meeting people, it really depends who you wish to talk to. if you want to talk to literally anyone, then you will of course need to at least be able to "speak Japanese". there are tons of people that would be more than glad to speak to an English speaker that can't speak Japanese at all, but the amount that are willing to actually try are few and far between. almost anyone that is young will pretty much be guaranteed to be too scared to speak to you (or at least hope to god that you can speak Japanese; you'll see this at any convenience store you go to), however, if you can show to someone that you can at least understand Japanese by starting the conversation in it, then they're significantly more likely to ease up and speak to you.

honestly, the biggest challenge for me (considering I don't know much Japanese) was getting out of Narita (the airport town), because Narita is a fucking mess. if you're going to need help getting out of there, prepare by either booking a hotel that has a shuttle to take you out of it, or get a cab to take you to the station.

anyway, it really helps if you have someone that has experience speaking Japanese to other people, because when you get there, you'll probably be too scared to speak yourself without them easing you into it. so if you can get someone to be with on the trip, that'd be a great help for you.

Anyway, the whole reason why you're using English when you're studying Japanese is to compare the meanings of the words so you can match them up to concepts in your head. If you continuously use the language, you should eventually get over it (especially by the time someone can read SubaHibi).

I threw away my english dictionaries and started a J-J deck, though it was mostly to improve my production and strengthen my existing knowledge. I didn't view English as a crutch, but more like a hindrance, and I was pretty frustrated at how bad I was at rewording complex words in speech.

It definitely had the intended effect of improving my production, as well as the side effect of curing some false J-E word equivalencies that I had formed, but the downside is that I'm unable to translate as quickly as before (which sucks because it's half of what I do for a living)

You don't have to make a deck or even do anki, but I think it wouldn't hurt to at least try to wean yourself off J-E dictionaries

I suggest you read easier things (preferably non-VN) or watching anything (anime, drama, TV, etc.). The more you read/hear (i.e. the more you use the language), the faster you'll become at reading/listening altogether. If you're reading something at the pace of a snail (e.g. something difficult like SubaHibi), the amount of text you're actually reading is practically nothing, so it's not very helpful to you if you decide to continue reading it.

I also recommend you to read everything you see in your head, as that simulates speaking it rather than translating it in your head.

Just think before you do anything, you'll probably be getting a railpass do you?
When you get your railpass in narita ask them how to get to your hotel easy as that.
Just ask people that are likely to speak english if you need help and you are fine.

In restaurants they not always speak english but every Restaurant has a menu with pics (there is often even a sign at the door that they have a english menu available)

Also if you hotel isn't shit they'll help you out as well.
Famous tourist spots often have people that speak english too.

What would you recommend me to read if not a VN? Isn't VN's generally recommended to a beginner, at least that's what I remember it used to be like at /a/. Not him but some people acquire grammar pieces (not grammar rules though) very rapidly without any reason to know what they mean. For example, I learned basic japanese grammar (sentence structure being SOV and desu/da being "is") when I was a kid by doing nothing but listening to a single vocaloid song on loop. Is it safe to trust amazon to get the 発売 date right?

I find that very often, if not all the time, the 発売 date written at the end of volumes of manga I read are "wrong" and do not match with ones I can find over wikipedia or amazon. I like to organize my stuff neatly so it often bothers me. How do you fellow autists do it?

And the entire point is that everything is painful as a beginner and that Subahibi is not notably harder to read than anything else not childrens book level. I think it's normal to lose motivation when trying to take on something beyond your level. People who can certainly do have a lot of patience though. It all depends on if it's compelling to you or not.

Subahibi is one of those stories where if your comprehension isn't at least on the borderline between what I consider "beginner" and "intermediate", it's not going to be very compelling.

Someone that hasn't read much and has only really learned core vocab and a beginner's grammar guide could probably bring theirself up to that level if they had a magic texthooker that inserted accurate furigana and segmented things without error, but without that (such a thing doesn't exist), I would consider it just out of reach, unless there's something magical about JSL memes that makes them get a boner for a story that they barely understand.

When I was an "absolute beginner" I did taekim and anki for about two months. Then I went and practiced with normal Japanese. I'm not sure what weird gap between these two you're talking about but it's probably not worth talking about. Sure you can read a bit of shounen manga and yotsubato, but sticking with them for longer periods isn't a good idea.

That picture has fuck all to do with learning and plenty of other kanji say シュウ, but it doesn't matter, all that's need is for that picture to be in my head and it will drag everything else with it. 着陸 : chuck rick out of the aeroplane because it's landed. 情, joe has a heart of blue. There are people who did the recognition-only route for kanji and say it was effective at making it easier to learn vocab. I personally did production with RTK and it was effective, but also a lot of work and you will forget how to produce if you don't keep practicing it forever. The japanese subconscious version of their grammar is very different from most western languages, most phrasal parts of speech in western languages like infinitive, gerund, adverbial relative clause, etc have a nontrivial correspondence to japanese, since the mood of those aspects of language are invoked using different types of grammatical patterns in japanese than in most western languages.

You don't have to do this, but it'll give you a headstart on "fluency" when you start actually reading. You'll be translating things in your head less, even when you don't understand them.

Don't concern yourself with "understanding" kanji. The japanese subconscious represents them as a unit with only aesthetic characteristics and maybe some hints to it. The way the english subconscious looks at latin roots is very close. You'll have no trouble "understanding" kanji the same way japanese speakers do once you start reading.

Merge duplicates is a rather bad idea, honestly.
You're better off making a simple field for notes in a way to distinguish cards with same kanji but different readings. Automating the "duplicates" in the manner the suggested add-on does is basically asking to introduce confusion latter on. Those kanji with different readings are different words and used in different contexts. If you're reviewing vocab they should be reviewed separately as individuals facts.
Basically what you've suggested by suggesting that add-on is a poor cross over between studying vocab and kanji individually with all of the draw backs and none of the positives.

This is why beginners shouldn't fucking give advice on these matters.

Legend of Galactic Heroes makes me sad.
I can pick up normal books, not even LNs but normal ol' books, and read them fine.
I can watch anime and read VNs and do just about anything I want in Japanese just fine.

But Legend of Galactic Heroes is too hard for me.

Protip: read more, if you're trying to listen before you're good at reading.
Listening is WAY easier when you know the words they're saying (and have an idea on what may come next due to experience).
A litmus test: if you're reading LNs and struggling to understand the dialogue, anime will be fucking hell for you

I think I understood the first half but this sentence confuses me
