It was making the game hard to extend the playtime and in a retarded way. RE4 fixed that.

Maybe like... once. I play RE with the shotgun exclusively and am an avid Fatal Frame fan. My tactics against zombies and zombie-like creatures extend to luring them into a corridor, waiting for them to get within 6" and then headshotting with the shotgun. Uses next to no ammo and by halfway through the game I had a metric fuckton of bullets just sitting around.
