Just finished Utawarerumono 3. Wow, what a trilogy. The third game completely redeemed the second, they form a perfect pair like Baldr Sky Dive 1+2.

I'm thinking of playing the Tears to Tiara series next. I've always thought that those games are flying under the radar, am I right? On vndb they are somewhere around top 300-400.

Also about Uta3, did Haku and Kuon meet in the end? It's kind of implied that Haku returned to the physical world since he left his coat on Kuon. I guess they just had to finish it with an implication like the first game, though much stronger this time.

They weren't that specific about it. Haku is obviously able to interact with the physical world in some way since he also saved that one child with dead parents who was earlier seen answering Voshis's call (using his newfound powers he gained from taking Hakuoro's place no doubt), though seeing as he already died once and disappeared again he's probably some sort of a spirit, incapable of just manifesting 100% and returning to Kuon proper.

Finished 天使の羽根を踏まないでっ. Frankly put many parts were in my opinion really boring and I considered dropping the game on few occasions. Sun school and its main drama were kind of crap, with convenient literal deus ex machina solutions, though I can understand that the Sun school part was intentionally supposed to be different from the rest. I just wonder why they decided to show scenes' from the villains' perspective, watering down any sort of mystery and tension it could have had.

Moon school wasn't that interesting from the get-go either and especially Tsumire being a massive retard and her group's students enduring daily extreme bullying and even rape felt extremely contrived. Despite this in my opinion the game never went to the proper extent of making the 三竦み war actually grimdark or even a high-stakes situation since no one dies. Ayame spending much of the common part getting footjobbed rather than doing anything meaningful served to lower the tension even more. Made the rapey parts feel like just a flimsy excuse of throwing in more H-scenes (though the bullying did eventually serve a plot point in Toro's magic). Considering the moon school part was supposed to be entirely different I kind of wished Shumon would've just ditched the lighter parts and instead gone all the way with constant action, since I loved shit like the descriptions of the magic or nomad fighting style. Ikoi's route was really abrupt, and even though it had some further foreshadowing for the scales thing I'd recommend people to just skip it since apparently playing it isn't one of the true route unlock requirements, and Hanene's route has roughly the same events, plot reveals plus more.

Hanene and true route redeemed the game for me, and especially the latter got proper goosebumbs out of me even though some parts felt a bit too cliche, and the plot developments the true route had were crammed into the very, very end. While there was no actual cliffhanger or anything like that, the game could easily use a sequel considering how it ended with both magic and miracles being released upon the world and the implication of other angels realizing God is dead. I don't think they really explained why Metatron was able to become God in the first place either.

Also a pet peeve, but I think it would've been better if Sora was actually a boy so the cutie protagonist had an excuse to take it up the ass. In general I don't understand why they decided to have Ayame actively voiced in H-scenes, but apart from maybe two HCG that don't even have insertion involved pretty much none of them show his face or otherwise hide it like is the case with most eroge. Music was a mix of tracks that I got sick of hearing a long time ago and also some good ones as well. Overall it wasn't that bad in the end, though definitely much weaker than Asairo or Itsusora.

I had this sitting around for a long time for when I wanted a quick fap, so why did things turn out the way they did? Bishoujou Mangekyou 1 and 2 also had more plot than average, so I figured there'd be a big confrontation at some point, but I didn't think it'd turn out the way it did.

In fact when I finished the game I went back and checked a walkthrough to make sure I hadn't completely fucked up with one of the choices somewhere. It's enough to make me want to do Riri's route.

Finished Rance 01 (remake). Was my first Rance experience and was actually a surprisingly fun game. Rance can be such a tsundere at times, although he also has his asshole times. (funny enough, the worst ones he even.. sorta.. apologizes afterwards)
The girls aren't really developed but are mostly pretty charming either way and the game just.. works. I quite liked the art too.

Guess I'll be playing more Rance games sooner or later, though I have no idea how to really tackle the series. The Rance 03 remake is the newest one and has voice-acting (don't know if that's good or bad..), so if I'd play that "last", I'd be skipping a number for sure anyway. Then I might as well skip at least 4 as well, as it seems it probably gets a remake as well? (1-3 all got one and it's old enough) Maybe skip even more? I just dunno. Well, the Rance 02 remake is probably a safe next choice at least..

Howdy! What do y'all use for screenshots? Right now I use Irfanview as recommended on the VNDB screenshot page but it has a few issues like not handling CJK character filenames 100% correctly and not having an option to just run in tray at startup. If there are any better programs that let you take a screenshot of only the client area I'd love to hear about them!

Mainly because only three important girls even appear in the game - Sill, Kanami and Lia.
One is well known for never having any development, another doesn't even get named in 01 and the last is the villain of 01. Well Maris is semi important I guess.

You should either play 2 kaikai or just read the digest that was released with Rance VI. It introduces a whole bunch of important characters.

04 remake is too long away and its pretty important to play it before Rance IX.

They can easily throw Hinae and Uki's routes into the trash bin as those two have nothing of importance. I'm wondering how they're going to handle Nono's, though it's not like her twist has that much impact on the main plot either so I can see them somehow weaving that into the common route.

I'm wondering most about Hana's route, since even though it reiterates stuff you already know from C;H like 300人委員会, it also properly introduces Wakui as an antagonist for the first time. Definitely the most important thing as far as true route is concerned.

New heroines of Noraneko Heart 2. Apparently the queen one is the rival of patricia, the classic arrogant princess type, and the other one is her maid. To be honest original heroines seems way better than those two and I cant see how will they fit into that friend circle but well, At least Nobuchina is getting a route and probably patricia's sisters will get more love in it since they are at the cover this time, so I'm still looking forward for it.

Playing this eroge, suddenly a scenes goes slightly "bad" and this cheesy "it's SAAAAD!!11" music starts playing, making you cringe. Right after your standard "everyone is happy" music.

Maybe some of you can relate. It happens. Just like having some melancholic, romantic or whatever ending and then suddenly some UTZUTZ ending music or whatever throwing you off your chair.
Last time I just tried muting the BGM and see if that's fine. Turns out, it was really fine. A lot of scenes, especially romantic ones and such, or scenes at night, gained a surprising lot. Even the ero scene (at night) felt more intimate without the usual.. ero jingles you get. (as stupid as the scene was, a minute after confession outside at night..)

Made me think. Maybe silence is underrated with VNs. Chaos Child had actually quite a few silent scenes as far as I remember and quite a lot of the OST was more ambient than actual BGM music. Worked quite well.
May also work for a soon releasing VN with BGM about what girls are made of. That way you can also focus on the voices more, which may be nice if you are like pic related.

Silence can make some scenes really great, but it's hard to use properly. Depending on how you place it, it can either make (for example) a shocking scene feel masterful and intense, or make an entire scene feel just empty.

And talking about ero scenes, the ero scenes in Kakurenbo and Tsuushinbo don't have music, just ambient noise, it was refreshing and made the scenes feel more "real".

Yeah, absolute silence is definitely a bit on the hard side, though ambience works quite well and should probably be used a bit more often.
Sakura no Mori Dreamers also has a lot of rather subdued music that doesn't stand out and is more about atmosphere. Comes a bit with the genre I suppose, but that's also an idea, if you don't want to go full ambience.

Well I guess it's always about how you do it. You can have the best OST, if it's used badly, that's that.

For what it's worth, Fuyune should've probably been endgame with her role. Instead it was all just shoved away and "forgotten" and Shizuka got the somewhat random "endgame" role.

I thought about complaining about the same exact shit a few days ago. The premise of TenshiHane includes a trap protagonist who is riddled with a deadly disease whose main symptom is him getting a raging boner, with one scene where a heroine is confessing her love to him and his symptoms kick in at the same time, accompanied with a BGM that's usually used in serious scenes. The heroine even offers to relieve him right there, so the BGM change came off as unintentionally hilarious.

On Chaos;Child and spoilers

I went into the game knowing one thing, that one of the heroines is actually MC's imaginary friend. Now I didn't know which one, but it quickly became obvious who. Not so much because of plot hints and intentional foreshadowing, but because she was just so perfect, so happy, so friendly with introvert MC, that if you know someone is an imaginary friend, it's obviously going to be her.

So I then made the conclusion that Serika wasn't actually real, that all her scenes were imagined by MC. This was backed up by a lot, she spent most of her time just talking with MC and not interacting with the other characters, black-hair didn't suspect that she had superpowers, she would randomly appear in MC's room without him noticing her coming in, and of course the hospital flashback. But there were times she would talk with other characters, and have scenes with them even with MC not there, which probably should've made me realise the theory can't be true. I guess when you get attached to believing something you just discard evidence to the contrary.

Anyway, I continued believing this, even with Serika was revealed to be the culprit, that it was just MC being schizophrenic and crazy. But it then became clear she was actually real, and I felt kind of cheated. This was a lot less interesting. It was probably more just the feeling of having expectations betrayed rather than a legitimate criticism of the storytelling though.

So this goes to show the effect even a tiny spoiler can have on one's impression and experience of a game. Obviously I still got all the other reveals normally, but I definitely would've preferred to have gone in blind. I guess it can't be helped though.

Now to read the other routes.

I actually had a similar experience with Steins;Gate 0.

Obviously, having read Steins;Gate, you already know how 0 will end right from the beginning. All the time I was expecting Okabe to transform into Hououin Kyouma again, make the video, and send it to the past.
However, since I like to do one initial run without walkthroughs, I ended up on the Altair route my first time through. I was confused as to why Mayuri had returned with Suzuha, since that didn't happen in the original. Not to mention Okabe didn't make any video.
Then I used a walkthrough and went through Automaton and Mother Goose. Again, both routes just kinda ended and didn't connect with the original.
Then I finally did Rinascimento and then had to skip through everything to get to the true Stardust end.
In the end, I'd say it was pretty good, but the route order just ruined everything for me. No ending had what I was expecting and waiting for, and when it finally did, it was too late and I didn't have the momentum of the route it happened in.
I'm hoping the anime redeems this story for me.

I guess I'll just start using walkthroughs right away from now on. How do you guys usually do it?

If you liked the first Utawarerumono, then definitely. It's easily one of my favorite games in these last couple of years. But only if you play the second and third games together (anime is a bad substitute for the second game, but acceptable for the first one).

The second one didn't get that high ratings because it ends abruptly with nothing much resolved, but it's very, very good at world and character building, and it's a massive setup needed to fully enjoy the third game. They are two halves of a single huge game, really.

The third game is much closer to the original first one with constant threat of war mixed with cute girls doing cute things, plus it resolves the sci-fi arcs that didn't really get a conclusion in the first or second games.

The sequels don't really develop the first game's setting regarding (spoiler only for the first game) the world being post-apocalyptic Earth any further than was already revealed, and are content in just using similar plot devices and developments. As such story wise you should go in expecting just more of the same as the first game except with better production values and new characters, nothing more nothing less.

Itsuwari no Kamen also feels like a really drawn out introduction since the main characters mostly just run around doing odd jobs for the actually important people and shit doesn't start going down until much later on, ending in a sequel hook. They f.ex. really delay the re-reveal of the first game's twists. Gameplay wise it's an improvement over the original, but it's also way too easy even on Hard difficulty.

Futari no Hakuoro improves the gameplay further and is actually challenging on Hard, so it's definitely better in that regard. Story wise it wasn't offensively bad or anything (with few exceptions), but I was still left with a somewhat lukewarm impression. The main antagonist in general was a completely unlikable retard.

I think the best thing about the sequels in addition to gameplay improvements was the entertaining lazy protagonist. Music was also great, and Futari no Hakuoro in particular uses plenty of vocal tracks.

In this case it's not enforced with the exception of one heroine. That concept is generally not good, if you ask me, but it's especially bad if "worst girl" has the final route. It's different for everyone, but to me at least she has the worst character design already and from my experience, that's a pretty bad sign. So a rather likely outcome is, that I'm not even getting to the final route, or if I somehow do get there, there'll be no payout.
In addition to that it not having a full enforced order also strips away what I liked the most about the Kuru games, so there's that as well.

Sure, this isn't definite, but eh. Not sure about the "quality" either. I mean sure the kurus have like ~80egs, but that's not THAT rare. I'd personally not consider them THAT great myself either.

Just finished Michi route from the Noraneko and man it was really really great. I had many laughs, Every characters got their time and shined very well, specially Asuhara, Ida, Nobuchina, Pato, Nora did a great job as the mc, there were many touching scenes and overall the entire route was very well made except the last shinigami parts. It has been a very long time since I read something like this.

While Asuhara and Sachi's routes werent as good as this (mainly because of the length of the routes), they were better than average as well, now as long as Pato's route doesnt have something very retarded I'll definitely buy their fandisc, they deserve my money for sure.
