It all depends where you're from, i'd find Russian about 20 times easier then English if i didnt already know it, since i know czech and croatian that about 50% of the Russian vocabulary.

8 kanji a day + 3 compounds per word a day keeps the doctor away．I'll just go ahead and list a compound from each kanji I memorized today.

無職 - Unemployed
能力 - Ability/talent/ability to do something
態度 - Attitude
不可能 - Impossible
重荷 - Heavy burden
予約 - Subscription/reservation
円形 - Circular
河口 - Mouth of an river

Casually doing this, I should have near 1500 kanji memorized by the end of spring semester. ITS LIKE IM REALLY A JAPANESE STUDENT

cool word of the day: 熱帯雨林 - tropical rain forest

I did Heisig and am running through a book called KO2001 now. I put whole sentences into an SRS so I don't get through a whole lot of new Kanji a day but my reading and grammar is going way up.

In about 9 months I should finish and by then I'll know 1100 Kanji and several compounds for each.

on a serious note though, when memorizing kanji, do you look at the kanji and then try and remember the word or do you look at the word and try to remember the kanji?

Well there are different ways to go about it but I use Anki and here's my set-up:
A typical card of mine:
Expression Field:
あの山は火山だ <- the sentence as it would appear in the wild
Meaning Field:
あの やま は か・ざん だ <- Modified string of kana for grammar purposes.
[sound:Audio85.wav] <- Text to Speech sound file which will play when production card comes up.
Reading:
あのやまはかざんだ<- The unmodified string of kana.
Notes:
That mountain [as-for] volcano [decl.]<- English translation in a Japanese grammatical structure.

KO<- Where I got the sentence, this one being from Kanji Odyssey.
