>>16200237
>What time should I arrive?
That depends on a few factors. Think of it this way; the closer to the front of the line you are the quicker you'll be able to get to the circles you want to buy from. Some super popular and limited circles will sell out shortly after the doors open at 10am hence people catching the first train of the morning and then waiting hours in line for the event to begin. If you arrive around 11am expect to get in pretty much straight away, but don't be surprised if some things are sold out, and in the case of the corporate booths, you have to line up for hours anyway. So tl;dr, there's no one answer.

Is there an admission ticket?
Nope. Just the price of the train.

>What are the contents of each day?
The general break down is;
Day one; Fujo doujinshi and corporate booths (think Kadokawa and the like)
Day two; 2hu day! Amongst some other things like doujin games
Day three; Male targeted doujinshi and music.
Naturally these aren't absolutes, some things can cross over.

>Is there a place to eat inside?
There's a combini on site but it gets pretty busy. I'd recommend taking something to eat in a backpack if you think you'll be hungry before you leave the site. That being said you can leave and enter freely and there are more combinis and cafes around Big Sight. I would also make sure you bring a bottle of water. Doujin hunting is thirsty work.

>Should I take bags for merch?
Definitely. Some corporate booths will distribute bags with merch but when you buy from circles you are just buying the doujin. Something that isn't too bulky and isn't going to get in people's way is best. A small backpack for example.

>Are creators generally willing to hold conversations?
If there isn't a line for the circle and you can speak Japanese then definitely. At the end of the day they are artists and like to get positive feedback about their work.

Hope that helps!

>>16200330
No problem. People tend to head there once they've bought all they wanted for the day but nobody should leave before then, so don't feel like you have to wait until 3pm. It's nice to sit around and compare hauls before everyone arrives and decides where to go for dinner and drinks.

The contents for each day have been different the last couple of events, and this year is mixed up again. Day 1 has 2hu, kancolle, and doujin soft/music. Day 2 is fujo and day 3 is porn. This past summer they moved the corporate booths from the upper west halls down to the ground floor, and this year they're back on the top floor along with west hall 2 (ground floor). They also added 2 new halls to the east side (7/8), but they're only utilizing hall 7 this event.

It seems like they're trying to filter some of the regular day 3 artists (professional illustrators and musicians) to day 1 to even things out. Here is the day 1 map.

Buy the catalog. Read the catalog. Pick out specific tables you want to see; the place is big enough that you can't stop at every table and browse. Almost all tables are only for a single day; plans your days accordingly.

Learn 東, 西, katakana, and hiragana; table locations are things like 東シ54b; if you can't tell シ from ツ you'll be unhappy.

Get your Suica and Pasmo in advance, and put enough money on them for the return trip; the ticket machines always have a super long line at the end of the day. The cellphone towers are completely overloaded; don't expect to be able to reliably use data while onsite.

Get a bunch of 500yen coins in advance if you can; some of the more noob exhibitors don't bring enough change. You can visit one of the onsite conbinis, but they're all super-packed.

Bring a comfortable backpack; paper is heavier than you'd think.

To me, going to Comiket is no different from Bataan Death March.

You'll go out at about 5 o'clock in early morning,
after arriving, you just keep waiting until its opening time at 10 o'clock,
shivering with extreme cold, in a long long waiting line.

The next hell that you meet is crowded people.
You'll get already tired like hell by then, and end up feeling so helpless and empty.

And then realize, "fuck yeah, at last, I've got my hands on these dojinshi!
but wait a minute, in the first place I could get these damn books on internet... couldn't I?"
and months later, you'll find out those books being covered with dust in your room.

This is why I quit going to Comiket.

It really varies year to year. There is an 8-month gap from winter-to-summer, so most artists have a lot of time to work on whatever it is they're planning on producing for summer comiket. Winter by contrast is just 4 months after the summer event, so you're looking at either products that didn't quite make it in time for summer, or something the circle was able to pump out quickly. Some circles may skip one event in favor of the other for their own reasons as well, and may do so regularly, so you really have to keep up with the groups you care about to know which event is best for you. As for industry booths it depends on which shows/games are popular at the time. I bought a lot more stuff from the industry area last winter than I did this past summer, but that is the opposite of the year before.

>>16234262
>>16235861
Good luck browsing. Anything worth a shit is going to be long gone by noon, so you're left with a bunch of crap nobody cares about. The huge circles that have 20,000 copies of whatever they're selling may have still have stock leftover late into the afternoon, but you can generally get that junk in Akiba or online anyhow. The stuff that people go to this event for are the limited items and goods that never end up in shops for reselling.

Some diehards like ZUN still complain about the commercialisation of comiket, but if it's true, why isn't anyone taking advantage of it? There is no service where you can write your own doujinshi and commission an artist to draw it. There are no regular or long lasting doujinshi magazines. There is no kickback to IP creators. Do they? I thought the doujin spirit is what is celebrated during these events.
I mean, you need something to derivate from. In a perfect world (or my version of that, anyway), Touhou would be F/LOSS+CC-SY-BA, but the copyright holders are already rather lenient regarding doujinshi in Japan, which, if I understand correctly, comes with its own share of problems.

>> No.16240398

>I thought the doujin spirit is what is celebrated during these events.
That may have been true years ago but all that is gone. Comiket is basically a huge cash grab now, and most of the consumers/customers there are simply trying to get their hands on rare items. They don't give a damn if its commercial, doujin, or comes out of a magical hat - they just want their shit and are willing to stand in line for it and pay for it.

Because sometimes a ¥‎2,000 book at the event will never be available at Tora or Melon, and will cost you ¥‎10,000 at second hand stores like Mandarake. There are also exclusive items that circles will sell with their books (posters/tapestries/bags/dakis/whatever) that are only available at the event, so you can only find the book by itself at the usual stores in Akiba after a few days.

If all you care about is mainstream doujins then sure, getting that stuff in Akiba or online is a lot less hassle, but most people going to comiket are usually after the rarer items.

If you follow specific circles then you should be able to figure out if they're selling limited items at comiket or not. Others will post indicating that their book will be available at specific stores, and you can pretty much bet on any of the really big name artists having their main books on sale at the popular stores in Akiba.

Usually any art book by famous animators is going to be near impossible to find afterwards, at least at a reasonable price. Take this book for instance:

The circle consists of 3 animators and was selling for less than 10% of what you have to pay now to get your hands on it. Most of these books are also the first ones to sell out because the circles never bring nearly enough to satisfy demand, so you can't assume that you'll be able to show up and get everything you're after if the stuff you want is on that tier.

I just don't like the public's perception of Comiket.
They're apt to think like, "Comiket is a paradise for nerds!"
Yeah, the place sure will be a paradise if you're such an alpha artist OR cosplayer who gets a million of attention.
But you are absolutely not. You are just one of the consumers.
It'd be more correct to say, "Comiket is a paradise for alphas!"

If those weebs would like to help to promote Japanese economy that much by dropping their savings, I won't stop them.
I hope they will experience more than being just a consumer.

Location of the circles is a rough indicator if you know nothing else. Shutter circles (i.e. in front of shutter door openings to the outside) will almost always have long lines and sell out at some point during the day. Wall circles (i.e. along the wall) are somewhat likely to have a line/sell out. Birthday circles (i.e. at the end of an inner block) may have a line or sell out, but probably not until later in the day. Island circles (i.e. middle of an inner block) will usually have no line and not sell out until late in the day, if at all. Of course there are always exceptions and you should also add/subtract likelihood of line/sell out based on popularity of the genre.

Music tends to sell slower than books btw. 20 circles isn't an unreasonable run for one person, you might miss a few if they are a majority wall+ tier though and you don't know how to order them.

Check their homepages, twitter, or whatever they use to communicate with their fans/followers. They should usually have at least a brief text description of what they plan on selling if not a little image of their goods. Basically anything other than the main item (book/cd) is likely a comiket exclusive.

Anything limited to X per customer is probably limited as well.
Anything that wouldn't be easily bundled with the item in a store/on a shelf is probably limited.
Anything really expensive ($100 daki, etc) is probably limited.
Items like omake/copybooks are usually limited.

Last comiket I noticed that ひょころ was selling a variant cover book at comiket. The art was the same was the version you could buy at the major stores in Akiba, however the comiket version had a prismatic cover.

Assuming you're replying to >>16252906, you seen to have misunderstood what's meant by shutter. The shutters are the large openings along the outer wall, but the red circle in your image is in an inside block between two halls, which has no special significance, hence it would be classified island.

The difference between birthday and island spaces is pretty minor anyway, so go by the advice in >>16254271 if possible.

Unfortunately predicting the speed at which any particular circle sells out is mostly guesswork, bordering educated guesswork at best. For instance, the teal/blue table in the M row is at the end of a block, so those are typically a bit higher tier than the tables in the middle of a block. That doesn't necessarily mean that they will always be more popular at any given event, will have more/less stock of their items, or that there will/will not be lines. There are a couple of things that contribute to a particular circle's popularity at any given event:

1. Who they are - simply put, big names attract big lines, regardless of what they are selling.
2. What they're selling - Some big circles come selling only older items since they didn't get anything done in time for the current event.
3. Their location - the shutter/perimeter circles will usually have some kind of line at the very least, however this is not always the case. You will see some tables that are split/shared between circles, with one half having a huge line and the other having nobody in line at all. Refer to items 1 and 2 to explain why they wouldn't have anybody interested.
4. Time of day - The most sought after items will draw the biggest lines early on, however once those circles start selling out and/or people have moved on to their next tier of priority circles, you can expect a bit of a cascade effect in terms of when different circles/areas have larger lines.

Sometimes you really have to pay attention to exactly what is being sold by a particular circle to estimate their popularity at the current event. For example, if a circle typically puts out a book featuring art from a group of well known artists, then you can expect that their book will sell very well. However, if they can't get some of the more popular artists to contribute for an event due to various reasons, then that specific offering may not sell nearly as well as previous ones if that information is available ahead of time. If you aren't aware of that fact then you may end up waiting in line for that item, get disappointed once you finally get it, then notice that they have plenty of stock left over at the end of the day because the demand just wasn't there.

You also need to pay attention to source material. Last event Sushio put out a Kiznaiver book because his KLKL wasn't done in time. His line was pretty long just based on his name/reputation, but it didn't sell nearly as well as his previous KLKL books did.

The idea of comiket was cute back when we had dial-up internet and there was a bit of value in printing out a book.

Now that places like DLsite exist, I can't help but despise comiket culture. I get that the profit margins are better, and if your product is limited, you get better sales at that margin. But material just being utterly ephemeral unless you have 10k yen to spend on a reseller is the worst fucking bullshit in the world. By all means, sell physical shit like low run GKs, dakis, whatever at these kinds of events. But not stuff that could easily be digital, when you're not even offering it up for sale online.

Is it true that to open booth there, one has to participate (and win) in some kind of a raffle?

Yep. Most popular circles are waved in though.

DERP

You must be a real autist to fail to even use Google Translate.

SRSLY. I walked into a JP Bank with my phone and GT and asked them for rolls of ‎¥500 coins and they understood easily.

And that was 10 years ago.

If you want it, you need to be prepared. I buy airline tickets 8 months in advance and it costs less than flying across the USA..

Crap.
Then, when is the raffle held? I heard it's held on previous event. As in, to participate in C92, one must win the raffle held on C91. True?
If all's fail, how big is the chance of a gaijin putting their works in a one's circle's booth?

Guys, I'm omw to Japan atm and can only go to comiket on day 3. Can anyone tell me where Locon's booth is located because I can't read scribbles. Also, what are some good places to visit/eat in Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo, and Oarai?

>> No.16298283

The deadline to apply is shortly after the previous comike, e.g. the next deadline is mid January as listed here:
http://www.comiket.co.jp/info-c/C92/C92Appset.html
You don't find out if you passed the raffle until later.

They don't care what nationality you are.
