I have a very strange sense of warmth when i see Japanese residential areas. Not sure what it is, but when i went to Japan last year, i wanted to be more in the residential areas of Sapporo than in the city itself.

It just seems so cozy.

I understand completely. Out of all the things I experienced there, walking from Narita station to AEON mall was one of my favorites.

We decided to skip the shuttle and enjoy the brisk morning. I got a coffee from Mister Donut and we just strolled through the suburbs.

The dense population means that it's quite easy and simple to get to places you want like a bookstore or a convenience store on foot or by bike. There's a lot of interesting building scenery due to the vertical construction.

It looks a lot more interesting than the shitty town I live in in the USA, where everything is built horizontally and spaced out, buildings rarely have more than one floor, and you have to drive a car to get fucking anywhere.

It comes from Japan's topography. The country is made so that people have to use every part of it to its fullest, giving birth to communities where people had to live next to one another and therefore not disturb the others. Therefore, streets are narrow as fuck, houses tend to be rather small and built vertically, etc. It gives a feeling of promiscuity that you can hardly find anywhere else while still retaining the privacy aspect thanks to people being respectuous.

Been to Sapporo during winter season, and coming back to the warm guest house with a rather nice host after a full day of walking around in snow and negative temperature is the most comfy shit ever.

I enjoyed my stay in Sapporo (winter season) quite a bit more than my stay in Okinawa (summer season) despite being rather sensitive to cold.

>In restoring an old house, it goes without saying that fluorescent lighting should be shunned, but this is not yet so obvious to the Japanese. The older generation, who grew up in traditional gloom, wanted only to escape from all those shadows, so they greeted the advent of fluorescent lighting with joy. The younger generation knows little else. In the West, people typically reserve fluorescent lights for kitchens, workspaces and offices, while the use of incandescent lamps, ceiling lights and spotlights for living and dining rooms is so standard as to be taken for granted. So visitors to Japan are unprepared for the complete and utter victory of fluorescent lighting, whose flat bluish glare has penetrated homes, museums, hotels, everywhere. Recently I spoke to a group of students of interior design and asked them how many had thought about illumination and done something to decrease the fluorescent lighting in their homes. Of forty students, there was only one.

Somewhat true, but most of those earthquakes are centered around the plate boundaries which are off shore.
In most areas the 9.0 quake registered a 5+ or 6- on the shindo scale max, which should only damage "earthquake prone" buildings.

Countries that aren't at risk of earthquakes don't build to the same standards as other countries though, so you're right, but if they were at risk they would be building to those standards so it would pretty much be the same.

I'm terrified that when I eventually visit I will be too overwhelmed and too preoccupied with not letting my time go to waste that I'll waste the whole trip. Maybe if I stay a couple months I won't feel so pressured?

This.

I think they are going to make it harder to migrate there if they succeed in automation. Something good for them.

Just return several times. It took me a while between the moment I wanted to go and the moment I went. Now I'm there every 6 to 9 months for 2~3 weeks and it doesn't feel as overwhelming as my first trips where I wanted to do everything.

It's also nice to see things changing as the time move on. Something you don't get to experience if you just do a single 3 months trip.

Too crowded. When i lived in Sapporo it was perfect sized. Still a city, less people.

Suicides ALL THE FUCKING TIME. It's about 4 times a month that i get a delay from a suicide. Not to mention sometimes i am on the train when it happens sometimes which is scary.... The feeling you get when someone just died is very scary and real.

Depressing. There is nothing more depressing than seeing middle aged men passed out in the station from working a 16 hour shift. You can see they're all depressed. You can see how stressed out they are. Normally when i come home (around 9pm) there are salary men that ARE JUST GETTING OFF OF WORK. I start work at 2pm, they start work at probably 7am... Some even earlier, i see some going to work at 6am, or even 5am when i go for my runs on my days off.

IT'S FUCKING LOUD. Seriously, i made a mistake by living on the main road, lucky i am in a quieter area but it's still loud.

The one plus is that everything is really close and easy to get to. When i wanna run down to the arcade i can in like 15mins. Wanna goto a store? 5min walk.

Suicide is not inherently bad, and your use of all-caps and ellipses makes me think you may not belong in /jp/. Dying is nothing to be afraid of.

Maybe not. But when it causes a nuisance to others (like delaying a train because others have to take care your remains) it is bad no matter how you look at it.

What Eikawa companies are the better ones in your opinion? Google has pages and pages of workers shitting on basically every one of them. I was thinking Interac looked alright, but the pay is so much lower than the others, especially compared to JET.

>> No.16190279

>>16189938

Really you just need to make sure to do your research. A lot of them are shitty, but most aren't that bad.

Typically they pay more than something such as Interac that takes a shit ton of fucking money from you in the summer (From what i am told)

My job is really nice, and i love it more than public school. However i will be looking for work in Sapporo soon once this contract is up.

Just make sure you look at reviews before you go for an Eikawa. I've ended up in a hell hole before and have horror stories if anyone wants to hear.

Suicide is bad. You don't know the errie feeling until someone has just jumped infront of the train you are on, and you hear their body slam against the train.

You will never ever understand until it has happened to you. And once you hear the sound and know what happened you won't forget it. I for sure cannot forget.

Had that happening three times in my life, one was in Tokyo (Nakano sta., Chuo Rapid (I read in the news later on it was an accident, but everyone assumed suicide at the time)) and while it's something you remember it's not as bad you make it sounds really.

Obviously you don't forget those days, the time it was, with who you were, where you were headed to, but it's not like it haunt you forever or something.

Of course not. However for the rest of the day i get really sad and depressed. Knowing someone just died is terrible for me at least. Maybe i am just a softie but it really gets to me.

It's not quite fair to compare your suburban town to a city of 2 million people like Sapporo. Comparison to a place like Cleveland which has a similar population density would be more appropriate and it's noticeably louder in downtown Cleveland.
